The slight taper helps shitloads with extraction, and it's literally a non-issue for pistols and SMGs, never has been, never will be.

If they cared and had the foresight to see all the uses of the round in the first place 124 years ago, you could argue they should have gone straight walled in the first place, but it's certainly not worth making the switch now.If you really want to move to a pistol cartridge without taper, you might as well find some other stuff to pretend is an important improvement and go 5.7 or 10mm or something.
