New to me handgun edition. Not too shabby for just under 600$ including tax. Gotta wait for ammo to come in though…Ported barrel chambered in 50 Alaskan. Found at a lgs. Probably the only one nuts enough to be interested in buying it in my area. Gonna fit right in with the rest of my big bore stuff. What kind of new to you stuff has everyone else picked up lately? It's my fervent belief that single shots are actually the most fun guns of them all

Got around to buying parts for a 2011 build. Got frames and a smattering of small parts and barrels. It isn't exactly home gunsmithing but I do enjoy fitting and assembling.
>>64414018Less potato pic>>64414046I plan on getting a few barrels for it, for now though I wanna try loading 50 Alaskan with 50 bmg bullets since I don’t have to worry about the pointy tip feeding in this…. Also should be able to chamber 500 linebaugh in it as near as I can tell…
>>64414187PSA's 2011 is still happening apparently, so PSA might have frames and parts in the future.
>>64414068same
>>64414030I’ve wanted a contender for a while. The lone eagle I have is a blast. I definitely feel like for the money, they put more effort into fit and finish than you get on a lot of semi autos in the same price range.
>>64414191Bout the only thing I'd want from PSA in regards to 1911/2011s would be the grip module if they're cheaper than Springfield's $50. I much prefer EGW and Wilson internals and small parts for just being really good quality.
Is there any downside to a rounded safety plunger?
>>64414006>>64414018Big bore bro! How have you been? I have been away from the thread for a while, but it's cool to see you are still around. Last time we talked, you were developing loads for that 500 Buschwacker. How did that project go? Did you get any other obscenely massive guns in between then and now? QRD on 50 Alaskan?I just got my first .45 acp for the first time in 15 years. That's my biggest handgun, kek.>>64414030What a good caliber for them? Something fun and relatively easy to find them chambered in and fairly affordable to shoot. I'm think .30-30 or .44 mag but I know nothing about them. I know anyone but big bore anon would probably be having a bad time with that 50 Alaskan.
>>64414190>as near as I can tell…Please, double check your math on that.
>>64414030Is there any advantage to single shot guns?
>>64414285They're usually really fucking cool looking and can have some of the best triggers among any gun depending on the manufacturer and gunsmithing involved. You can also load obscene bullets unlike an auto which is restrained by magazine size.
>>64414285They weigh less and have less mechanical parts than a semi auto or even a magazine bolt gun. Also, guns like the Contender can be barrel swapped for a massive variety of calibers. They also have super consistent lock up and tend to be able to handle some pretty hot loads. They are also neat and fun.
>>64414285For the contender and encores specifically you can remove the barrel with minimal work. On my contender it’s 2 screws and a pin, and swap in a new barrel in a different caliber…. It’s got dual firing pins to let you shoot center or rim fire rounds. Aside from being interested in it for the extra large 50 Alaskan round, being able to get barrels in different calibers is gonna be nice for reloading. In general the encore/contender actions are a lot stronger than most pistols and revolvers to the point of having a dedicated section in most reloading manuals.. admittedly they were a lot more popular for handgun hunting and for steel target competitions, and they’re a lot more niche these days..
>>64414336I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t planning on picking up barrels for 454 and 357 as well as some of my other calibers just for testing purposes… it also takes the cylinder gap out of the equation which should make my chrono data a bit more accurate…. Barrel price depends on caliber. Funbroker has them starting around 240$ ish, no transfer fee since it’s just a barrel as well..>>64414271Doing good man. Took a break from reloading over summer because the garage was a million degrees. Still enjoying the BFR. This contenders gonna be fun, picked up a 460xvr xframe with an 8 inch barrel a while back as well. What 45 did you get?
>>64414279Case dimensions seem to be a match for everything but the neck diameter and case length. 500 linebaugh is a .540 neck diameter vs .536 on the 50 Alaskan, but they both share a .610 rim diameter, so with the shorter length of the 500 linebaugh I suspect that neck sits within the taper of the 50 Alaskan chamber anyway. They’re both a .510 bullet. It’s close enough that I think it’s worth buying a 50 pack of brass to see if it seats. You’ll have some jump before the round hits rifling but with a tapered bullet I doubt that’s gonna be an issue. If it works it’ll make for an easier way to do reduced recoil loads vs underfilling 50 Alaskan cases.
>>64413999Anon, help. I’m the recent Alaskan acquirer. I got to take it out and shoot it again yesterday and put more .454 and .45 through it just to test different box loads (the Liberty Defense stuff is hilarious) and ran into a problem where the gun began to jam up every so often, usually every 5th/6th shot. It did this only once last time I shot it so I just ignored it but this time it was bad.I got home and cleaned it very thoroughly and it now functions flawlessly, just as it did before I shot it. There was a drag line on the cylinder face where it looked like it was rubbing the forcing cone, but I gauged the cylinder gap at .005, which is well within spec. I calipered the extractor star notches and they were all pretty much the same. I brushed, oiled, etc. the whole thing, making sure to get into the cylinder axis pin hole and whatnot. What I did find, and what I think caused the problem, was a flake of powder under the star. I cleaned that out and all is well now.Did you ever have any issues similar to this? Is there anything else I should check for? I’m planning on shooting it again and if it does it one more time I’ll probably be sending it back to Ruger just to let them deal with it but I really don’t want to be without it. I love this thing.
>>6441438045 makes them dirty pretty quick and mine will feel like it “locks up” after a 150 or so rounds…. Other than that I did take mine apart (which is a pain and easy to lose springs doing so so with caution) and used some 6000 grit sandpaper on all the shafts in it which made it noticeably smoother for trigger pull.. however I suspect you can get this effect from eventual wear in and I can’t understate how much several of the tinier springs inside want to disappear if given half a chance. Dropping the trigger group from the frame is also not super easy in my experience. In general though with the shorter length barrel 45lc is gonna be very dirty through it. 454 is not too bad depending on the powder used.
ordering an 1851 navy revolver because I they don't require an FFLgood or bad idea lads?
>>64414223Part of troubleshooting or maintenance is cleaning them up/polishing them. They tend to take on a sort of rounding anyway whan hit with fine grit sandpaper. So no No negatives i have ever seen. Just smooth functionality.
How exactly did Beretta get away with copying Walther's design at the time? It's one thing to do it 40 years later but Walther and Beretta were contemporaries and competitors in the 40s and 50s. And they straight up copied 50% of a complete gun design with no repercussions? In 2018 Sig sued Glock because they designed a slide release based on the same mechanical principle. Just 1/40 parts of a gun was enough, let alone half. Sig sued Steyr over the modular chassis concept Steyr (and Kellgren) had first. Glock sued S&W over the Sigma which is apropos.
>>64414483I'm just wondering if Glock uses safety plungers with hard edges for any reason other than just cost savings
>>64414275 That sounds like a good plan. I have never done a build with parts all from one company. As far as Apex goes, I have never been disappointed with one of their triggers. But I like the SA-35 for it's old school look and the flat trigger messes with that, but I bet it is totally worth it for actually shooting the ting instead of just looking at it. Also, IDK how 1:1 the SA-35 is, but Cylinder and Slide has a fuck ton of Hi-Power parts and everything they sell is top notch. I didn't even think of that. I bet you can find whatever you need there. https://cylinder-slide.com/Category/BHPparts Do you know where you are going to buy the gun? https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/706397943967
>>64414068Definitely. >>64414367Sounds reasonable. >>64414347>460xvr xframe with an 8 inch barrelBased. My buddy is obsessed with .460 and brings it up any time revolvers are mentioned. He even talked about it when I showed him your BFR last year. He'll never get one, but it definitely lives in his head rent free.>What 45 did you get?Nothing special. I'm the guy that got the Colt 1911 Classic. I got the notification that it was well below the price I wanted and I knew I would regret missing the chance, so I went for it. I bought it right before I went on vacation, so I haven't bought ammo or mags yet. I'm trying like hell to budget, but I'm getting antsy and I just want to order that shit anyway. I mean, I'll have the same amount of money by then anyway, right?

>>64414576Nice. I got a Springfield milspec 1911 because I’d shot one at rental range and liked it. That looks like a lot of fun to shoot. The boomer in me is not a fan of 1911’s with the tactical features, and I don’t like the beaver tail safeties. Speed holes in the trigger seem silly…. But that looks like it wants to be the original design but with the creature comfort features like taller sights, and probably the larger ejection port. Cool gun. Fwiw I asked at a few local gun stores if they had extra mags and ended up with a few pretty nice Kimber marked mags for like 10$ a piece.. the 1911 mag design seems pretty standard..
>>64414380Neat guns.>I’ll probably be sending it back to Ruger just to let them deal with itWell, clearly you don't want to have to send ot back and it really sounds like it was just dirty, but I have heard anons ITT say that Ruger will do a trigger job and lot of hand polishing of internals as kind of a way to say sorry for letting a problem gun get out.
>>64414502Walther makes good guns, other companies copy them, that's their whole thing. Without the Model 1 and 2 you don't get the Liliput, and so you don't get the Ring-Of-Fire pistols, there's no HiPoint, Raven, Lorcin, Jimenez, Phoenix, Sundance, so AMT doesn't have a dozen clients to sell barrels to, the Automag pistols stop being made in 1969 and never return, so AMT never buys OMC, we never get the Grendel P10/P12, Kel-Tec never happens, no Ruger LCP, Security 9, American, Taurus never makes striker-fired-Kel-Tec-clones producing an entire line of guns that fire if you shake them leading to the largest recall in firearms history, no P250, no P365, no P320/M18, no Hellcat, no M&P9 Shield, no XD-E or XD-M, no 2011 (we'd still have double stack 1911s, but not the 2011), the P938 would be the best concealed carry firearm in the world and we'd all be worse for it. Every Walther gun of note has been copied and cloned to death, and often beget whole lines of handguns that inspired whole other lines, and so on, and so on...
>>64414607>frogposter in 4channel.org>calling anyone nerdlollmao, even
>>64414502>>64414674In all seriousness though, Walther's patents didn't really touch the operating mechanism. It's the recoil springs and rods and how they're used, that was the "novel" thing they described in detail in the one patent, the other pertains primarily to the extractor and arrangement of the extractor assembly. Pick out two obvious differences between a P38 and a 951, the extractor and recoil spring(s) come to mind.

>>64415115I love this little fucker but sitting in a desk drawer for over 50 years may not have been great for it. I really don't want to take apart the striker assembly but I think it's time. Anyone ever had the pleasure of replacing a striker or firing pin in one of these?
>>64414842PSA is using MJD? Fuck those are expensive and not what I expected them to spec for their pistols. Right now MJD has a limited time special 3 grips for $400. Black, tan, and olive are the colors you get. Grips come with a bare texture and with mainspring housing.

>>64414380my dad has one and every once in a while when we were shooting he says it jams up, same thing you described. But after I shot a box through it we figured out he isn't letting the trigger go all the way forward to completely reset the mechanisms. He's not had an issue since I taught him to fully take his finger off the trigger for each shot.
>>64414271Also the qrd on 50 Alaskan would be it was developed in Alaska for a stretched out lever gun and aside from tons of case capacity it also shares a bullet diameter with 50bmg… originally the guy who came up with the round used 50 bmg bullets and cut the tips off, flipped them over and loaded those…. Since I don’t have to worry about feeding issues or using a tube magazine I should be able to just go ahead and load 50 bmg pointy rounds in it…. Doubt this has the right twist rate but if you want a really fun watch you can find some YouTube vids of a guy who got a barrel with a fast twist rate, and then loaded 700-800 gn rounds on 50 Alaskan cases as subsonic rounds and ran it suppressed.. although I think he has an encore not a contender. tldr is 50 Alaskan is a giant obscure lever action round that generally has people saying “I’m pretty sure you could just use 45-70 and it would still kill whatever you come across”

>>64415115>>64415145Neat, what caliber? Anyway, you are probably right in that you need to clean the striker assembly. Hopefully, it is just dirty and not rusty. I'd be interested to see the results of your adventure. I really like those old Savage pistols, but I feel pretty well priced out of them.
>>64415678The newly manufactured ones have a slightly extended beaver tail, which helps a tiny bit and putting wood grips on them helps a tiny bit because they are fatter. The biggest help is getting one in .32 acp, which is what it was designed for. The .380 guns are kind of like all those 9mm guns companies tried to cramm .40 S&W into in the 1990s or the 1911s that they tried to stuff 10mm into. Yeah, it can be done, but it's outside the initial design intent. Unlike those guns, though, they could never engineer out the problem of being to violent for the frame size. All that being said, I love mine, even if it is a bit beastly to shoot.
>>64415333Keked and checked.
>>64415487>you could just use 45-70Where's the fun in that? Also, I forgot to ask earlier, what Tomfoolery have you gotten upto with that .460? I haven't looked at the data, but I'm guessing you can get some crazy case pressures and velocities out of something like that.
>>64416383Haven’t had the chance to do any reloading for it yet, run about 100 rounds through it though and it’s fun as hell. Was getting about 1700 fps with 300 gn rounds out of it and just under 2000 with 240 gn xtps. Also got to compare some 454 from that with it from my Alaskan, interesting to be able to see how much of a difference the barrel length makes.

>>64414472They’re a lot of fun, it was my first gun I bought before I turned 21. Definitely not as enjoyable as shooting a regular gun, but the novelty was fun while it lasted
>>64416964>1677 lb/ftThat better than 7.62x39. What speed is that?>>64416962>interesting to be able to see how much of a difference the barrel length makes. How much will not having a cylinder gap affect things?Got me thinking unwise.https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1118071122
>>64417096That’s 1677 fps. About 1623 lb/ft energy wiseIf your only looking at energy then the factory Hornady 200gn ftx rounds were doing 2285 fps for about 2319 ft/lbs of energy out of an 8 3/4 inch barrel…. Which feels pretty wild when you compare it with other guns…>>64417096You lose a little gas and velocity for the cylinder gap. If your just shooting for fun it’s not a big deal, the main reason I’m interested in testing revolver rounds without it is to verify how accurate the GRT load calculations for my reloads are. The software has a calculation you can put in to compensate for cylinder gap, but testing the same round in a barrel without one would give a bit of an idea as to how good that calculation is.
>>64417096Honestly that’s a pretty nice price considering you get the second barrel and scope…. If you hunt, or just want to shoot steel and don’t need rapid follow up shots the single shot guns are a lot of fun. Also at least on the contender I have the trigger is a whole lot nicer than anything else I’ve run into that wasn’t in the several thousand dollar range.. pic is cocked and ready to go, almost no overtravel and it’s like biting into a fresh apple crisp…. The designs simplicity lends itself to tighter tolerances.. also if you have a pistol rest and some patience you can be absurdly accurate with one of them.
>>64417136>If your only looking at energyTo be completely honest, I don't think I would really enjoy shooting these monster rounds that much, but I am very interested in them from an academic/engineering standpoint. I guess I also enjoy the idea of a handgun that will reliably kill anything naturally occurring in Americas. (Cocaine hippos don't count)What is your main motivation?>2285 fps for about 2319 ft/lbsGood lord!
>>64417154>that’s a pretty nice price Yeah, but it would be another new caliber and I just bought into a new caliber that I still need to buy mags and ammo for. Maybe if it's a jam-o-rama like ever other 1911 I have ever owned, I'll trade it on a contender. I need to just be happy with what I have or at least wait 6-8 months to see if my infatuation stays. I really do like shooting pistols at 100 yards and I'd like to start hunting pigs with one.
This is a very specific question, but do you have any recommendation for CCW while riding a sport bike? Appendix carry would seem to be uncomfortable unless you are carrying a very short pistol, and scout carry could break your back if you fall. It's shoulder carry the best option for riding a motorcycle? Also, would you recommend carrying a pistol in Condition 0 ? I don't plan of falling off my bike often, but if it happens I don't want to shoot myself in the process.
>>64417206>Also, would you recommend carrying a pistol in Condition 0 No. I ride frequently and will tell you for a fact you can't hit shit off your bike and probably don't ride enough to safely draw and fire (protip you have to use your left hand). A bike is for manuever and speed which means a quick draw and gunfight are your absolute last options. Instead you should be simply getting into gear and getting away. Even the shittiest bikes tend to have a better 0-60 than even some of the best sports cars. If you can't get away on your bike, then you're going to be running for cover. The danger of having your condition 0 pistol ready to pop you is far more dangerous. Note that if you use a 1911 style pistol (safety that can be fully trusted), then you might be able to get away with it but keep in mind the 1911 was quite literally made for calvary
>>64417206I would unironically get one of those satchels that strap across your chest
>>64417206Re: can't carry appendix with a long gun, I think you probably wouldn't want to carry appendix in a way that won't let you sit down or squat anyway. If you're short, that comes with certain limitations, and this is one of them.Something like Andrew's Carjacker might work well if you're an "all the gear all the time" rider. Shoulder holsters would work, but an alternative you might consider is a chest bag like 945 industries. 945 in particular has velcro adapters that let you put an IWB appendix rig inside the bag, so you don't have to wear the murse after you dismount. If you use a gun with proper drop safety, you're not going to shoot yourself during a fall.
>>64417200To be fair, it can technically be pretty much all the calibers… you can find barrels for it on eBay…. But yeah I get not wanting to jump in to another one right now. Honestly I would usually have waited longer after getting that 460 but this was a bit to uncommon and too god of a deal to pass up so I ended up making it work. It’s gonna be a while before I can pick up dies and brass to really experiment with it.
>>64417206Alpine stars airbag vest has a concealed carry pocket/strap

>>64417171>> What is your main motivation?I really like the big boom. I have no practical reason to have the big bore collection I have, I just really enjoy the noise, the recoil, and demolishing test targets…. This was from 3 shots of 500 bushwacker a few weeks back. It split a block made of 4 layers of 2x4…. Fwiw those are 350 gn xtp rounds doing 2130 fps for 3526 ft/lbs…. Got them to blow through about a foot of solid rail road tie on a previous trip…
>>64417206A left handed shoulder holster would be best if you are committed to the shooting from a moving bike LARP, but like that other anon said, it's pretty much your worst possible option except maybe if you get confronted by a jogger at a red light. Even then, getting away should be the first consideration. Whatever the case, practice shooting from the bike.>Condition 0Just get a plastic striker gun or a DA/SA and carry in Condition 1
>>64417297>I have no practical reason to have the big bore collection I have>I just like itis always a good reason, as far as I am concerned. I mean, WTF do I need a 1911 for? I definitely get it. Like I said, I don't know if I would like the big boom (I find. 50 AE a bit unpleasant) but I love the nerd shit. I also like seeing things get smashed with big bullets. I also appreciate really excessive things like crazy over built engines or gigantic hand guns.>Bless excess.
>>64416309Mine's a 32. The guns aren't expensive, $200-$400 is normal, but magazines are an issue. Mags run $150-$250, repros are "only" $50-$70 but will never, ever run.
>>64415145damn I thought it had a hammer. Anyways, the assembly doesn't look all that complicated.
>>64417245I don't plan on using a pistol while riding, it's just that I use a motorcycle as my daily driver and I was wondering if it's safe to carry a pistol ready to fire in case I have an accident
>>64417206FWIW I appendix carry an LCP on my bike. It's more standard seating than sport though.
>>64417408I'm sure it'll be fiddly, small parts, but it's not terribly complicated. I've never had a gun so consistently draw blood when I work on it though, I expect to be digging the firing pin out of my palm with a pair of pliers.
Will pissin hot 158gr +P buffalo bore 38 special possibly damage an older model 10 from 1975?

Let the meth head/ cartel Beretta slide soak in rubbing alcohol, hit it with degreaser and scraping out the super glued gold glitter from it. Maybe start to nickel plate it this evening or tomorrow evening.

>>64417446I'd say there is a risk, yes.
>>64417477You should acid etch it a tiny bit first. Also, alternating copper and nickel will help keep it bond to the part better. Start with the copper. You can use root killer for the solution and I'm sure you can find a piece of old pipe or whatever for the anode, but be careful. Copper in solution is toxic as hell.

>>64417206I don't carry on body on my bike. It's in a magnetic tank bag with a perimeter zipper that is undone on the side closest to me. My tank is metal on my old bike, your tank is probably plastic on a sport bike so you'd need one that is strapped on. I don't want to fall on my gun I wind up crashing regardless of the reason, that's why it's in a bag. Also, my gear, which I do not ride without, would preclude getting to the gun quickly whether I'm in my one piece touring suit, my one piece leathers, or my two piece suit. That being said, for me the biggest issue is that with proper riding gloves most of my pistols are unusable. For that reason my USP is my motorcycle carry, even though I never carry it otherwise. It has a big trigger guard and is the only handgun I have that my gloved trigger finger doesn't snag on. >>64417245 is a retard pointing out the obvious thinking he's smart. You're not going to gunfight while riding, we all know that, you have it in case some jig jumps out of a car at a light to jack your bike and you can't get away because his ride is blocking you, or so that you can CC at your destination.

If my gun and holster is 1.5" thick, that adds like 4 sizes to my waistband. How do you guys do this? Also, I'm not fat, so answers that involve sinking the gun into blubber won't work for me.
>>64418094Wear the holster when trying on clothes.
>>64418039>>64418076My USP is a full size, the compact has a smaller trigger guard. I don't know if it would be an issue. Bring your gloves to a gun store. I don't carry my USP outside of motorcycling because it's just too damn big.I don't know what anon's issue with the USP is. It is a great gun, good quality, notoriously durable. It's bulky, that's really all that is wrong with it. I'm pretty sure the USP compact is one of the biggest "compact" guns.
>>64418094>Do you guys buy pants sized up to carry IWB or something? If my gun and holster is 1.5" thick, that adds like 4 sizes to my waistband.IWB people don't understand that not everyone wants to wear baggy cargo shorts their entire life.
>>64418146The USP Compact is maligned here because it lacks the uniqueness of the full-size USP and it is essentially replaced by the p2000(sk). So it's a jack-of-some-trades
>>64418160Depends on you, depends on the gun. Usually you'll have some space within the drape of your shirt that can hide something without forming a large bump on the belt line, but if you're small, you'll only have space for a small gun.
>>64418076HKs are not particularly well made, they're on the same level as all the other plastic manufacturers. Get over the idea that HK is some ubermench overbuilt tank supergun.
>>64414917You can buy a new m2.0 optic ready with the new trigger for 400 on 208gunshop website It also comes with a cheapo light you can sell for maybe 50 bucks
>>64418102I really don't want to replace all my pants or be stuck with a few specific pairs of 'carry pants," but that seems like it would work to figure out if I need to size up. Thanks. >>64418160>wear baggy cargo shorts their entire lifeA lot of guys get really mad when you tell them that you don't plan on dressing like a slob. Idk why, it's not like anyone is telling them what to wear.
>>64418076>what makes the USP Compact bad compared to other compact pistols?NTA, but the USP series (Full and Compact) are a bit dated in their designs and features. They lack a modern weapon light interface on the dust cover, and their magazine capacities are slightly reduced when compared to pistols of similar size. For a carry option their slides are kinda wide (fat) so they don't hug the body as well as a Glock type striker gun. The aftermarket for them is also pretty limited now as well. Holsters options are fewer (excellent options do exist though), as are aftermarket iron sights, and red dot milling mounting options. Good aftermarket upgrades include:- Grey Guns trigger, and Short Reset upgrade, OR- HK LEM trigger option- Some iron sights that work for you- Holster from Safariland or Tier1 Concealed- Larger mag release if you want- Grip wrap/tape if you want. - Spare magsThey aren't like Glocks that can be riced out in infinite ways, but they are still a workable platform. I had a USP45, and still have a 40C from like 20 years ago, and both were/are extremely reliable. I hadn't even touched the The USPC 40 in a long time, but will probably do the items listed above to have it as a DA/SA option. The USP is a great platform for 40S&W. The USP series just have a reputation as an outdated hipster/meme interest platform because it kinda is, but it still works. It was featured in lots of popular TV, movies, and vidya so lots of interest and buyers are due to nostalgia. In the early 2000's you could get a Sig (now legacy series pistol 220, 226), Glock, or an HK USP.

>>64414848My next two buys are a USP and a ps90, cry about it.
>>64415145>>64417441Bottom end was easy, no surprise there. Dirty though, the rough 110+ y/o machining holds a lot of filth. Signs of past rust repair, as I understand it this sat in a drawer for around 50 years before quickly passing through multiple owners, I suspect one of them tried to clean up whatever rust they could from just a field strip.
>>64418596Found the crunch. The channel is worse, scrubbed a lot of horror out of it. Striker and spring cleaned up easily, sear surface on the striker is perfectly fine which tells me this hasn't actually been fired much, or at least not since it was last replaced. Striker cocks back smooth as butter now, but it hasn't actually made things any easier. Still takes a huge amount of force cock the striker, damn near impossible to pull the slide back without precocking it, my fingers are getting shredded to bits.
>>64413999>Berettas 92s have tons of current fanboys off the back of their prolific use in the 80s/90s>SIG 226s have tons of current fanboys off the back of their prolific use in the 80s/90s>S&W autoloaders were used everywhere for decades, nobody even mentions them in passingWas there something wrong with them, or are they just passed onsince they aren't in production anymore? LGS has a bunch on consignment and I like how they feel.
>>64418664Some were shit, many were not. They never had the production to actually build a fanbase. S&W rarely produced any model for very long, certainly not long enough for it to be prominently featured in media and build interest while still in production. The P220 has been in production for a solid 50 years now, same with the 92. Fall in love with the 59 watching Day of the Dead in 1985? Oh it's already 3 years discontinued. But the 459? Oh it wasn't in a movie until the year it was discontinued. Miami Vice got you wanting a 639? Too bad, they only made them for 4 years. Keep going down the list, they made a lot of guns, most had production runs of 4 - 8 years, and only a handful managed to be featured in a TV show or movie during their actual production. Want to see a S&W with a fanbase? Model 36/38, one of the most prominently featured guns in film history, if you've ever seen a cop in a movie or TV show use a snub nose revolver there's a very high chance it was one of these. 49 year production run, didn't make it into its first move until it was 9 years old.
>>64418664>Was there something wrong with them,sw had really shitty quality control. they were capable of making a good gun but at the same time were happy to let something that wouldnt shoot straight out into the wild. even people who liked them back then would buy a second thinking it would be as good as the first and it would be a pile of shit.
>>64418732Model 29 owes a lot to its movie appearances…. Without dirty hairy that gun would be dead and buried.

>>64418520My thoughts exactly. It's an affordable quality firearm with no frills. I think it is important for people to be able to defend themselves with an affordable and reliable firearm and the G2 does it pretty well.
>>64418732>Miami Vice got you wanting a 639? Too bad, they only made them for 4 years.Training Day and the 4506. It was 2 years out, of production when the movie came out.
>>64418596>>64418654Thanks for the updates and images. Very interesting. >Still takes a huge amount of force cock the striker,Is this a separate action to racking the slide?
Excuse me, gentlemen, but I believe there is a pretty significant film appearance of the classic Smiths you are forgetting.
>>64418918>639 x 659 fanfic>Movie came out 4 years after both were discontinued
>>64418890Optionally. Racking the slide back also cocks the striker mechanism, but the faux-hammer can be used to cock the striker manually without racking the slide. It's a typical sentiment with these guns that they're difficult to cock, and people often recommend cocking the striker manually before racking the slide, but this is well beyond the normal amount of difficulty. I've got some replacement springs coming, they were dirt cheap, I'm curious to see if the replacement striker spring is as stiff as this one is.
Of the classic third gen Smiths you're discussing, what's the best for conceal carry
