It was made because the traditional shiny metal pickelhaube the mounted royal guard used to wear was forced out of service by the Swedish equivalent of OSHA for being unsafe.They really rushed development on this thing because the royal guard briefly had to switch to plain commercial riding helmets that looked really fucking stupid and clashed with their otherwise very old fashioned uniforms.BTW, this unit still trains with and carries the Model 1894 Mauser carbine (they even made a new training manual for this thing in the 1990s), and they're still issued live ammo and expected to use them if some nutcase or terrorist tries to pull some bullshit at the royal castle.The other units stationed at the castle do however wear modern uniforms and carry modern weapons.
