What would warfare be like if witches and wizards (the kind that fly on brooms, cast spells, make potions, etc.) were real and integrated enough in their respective national and ethnic communities to enlist and fight in wars out of patriotic fervor?

What if, theoretically in this alternative world, people became witches and wizards by staying virgins until they turned 30? Meaning witches literally couldn't be barrack bunnies without losing their powers.
Imagine the sexual frustration of a 30 year old virgin mixed with powerful magic, shit would be terrifying.

The cool thing about Unsounded's magic system is that it does have rules and principles, it's not just "waggle fingers and plot happens".

You can issue commands to the khert, arbitrer of reality and it can do things like change the settings on object, so if you "aim at skin" and change it to liquid from solid you can skin an enemy alive. But too much messing about causes the khert to become agitated, and if you format a command wrong it's you who gets liquified or worse

Exactly this.
And you even left out the most important thing: what's the "catch" to magic in this world? Or in other words, what's the limiting factor? Is it physically exhausting? Does it cause mental strain? Physical harm? How many of what kind of spells can someone cast in a day, and how long does it take them to recover before they can do it again?

>potions
how long does it take to make them? how limited are the ingredients? This is like asking "how much does a beverage cost" without specifying if you're talking about tap water or some uber-fancy cocktail made with rare spirits.
>>
>>64420757
an other important factor is how scalable it is
if you need to be born with the gift of magic even if it's easy to learn and powerful there is a hard limit on how much you can have
if you learn magic even if it's harder to do and not as powerful you can now have as much as you are willing to put resources into training more magic users
the same with potions
can you grow the ingredients and brew them a vat at a time or do they require free range inputs and an artisanal brewing ritual per flask
>>
>>64420757

In the magic system of Unsounded, wrights (Magicians) can move around aspects such as solidity, pressure, momentum either by stealing it from an available object or with aspect batteries. You need to know the name of a thing in the language of the khert in order to cast on it, so military grade doors, for example, can be made of composite materials that are hard to identify

It'd be weather wars 24/7. Just constantly spelling and dispelling each others' storms, droughts, blizzards, hurricanes etc. trying to ground the airforce, keep the navy at port and starve/cook/freeze the civilian population.

Camo nettings, berms, barriers etc. fucking everywhere to stop wizards from fucking obliterating anything in LOS. Every engagement is forcing the enemy to get their rare and expensive magic guy within melee range of 100+ expendable grunts with enough machineguns, explosives and poison gas to overwhelm them.

Lasers, ultra-right lights and flashbangs everywhere at all times. 90% of magic is being able to see what you want to effect, so all battlefields come equipped with eye-seeking laser sentries. Wizards live in constant fear that one day they'll be attacked. Of course it's just one guy, but that one guy suddenly produces a Retina-Render 9000 with its capacitor-powered 10ML xenon bulb that he just has to get somewhat near to you to instantly delete your vision until you can get another magic fucking to take time off from inflicting monsoons on Tunisia to heal you.

Head-seeking mini racing drones equipped with as much explosives as can possibly crammed on there. You just get finished raising an army of the dead from a veteran's graveyard and all you hear is "eeeEEEEE-" as a guided hand grenade hits you square in the face at 100mph.

Hm, no the raven zombies are just a one time thing, there's zombies in the setting but they're like work robots and technically not allowed to be used for war.

The story follows the protagonist who is undead but more like a Lich and a tailed thief girl, the war bits are mostly flashbacks to when he was alive. But they're fairly well done and the magic system and how it applies to war is cleverly developed

>Everyone has magic but it's tied to some form of bioetheric stamina that lets the user twist physics around but not too much and can exhaust the user pretty quickly.
Every soldier gets basic magic training for useful things. No fireballs or magic attacks, that shit's useless in the face of bullets. Squads are buffed magically instead. Sound and visual suppression for stealth, shielding for combat, enhanced senses for recon, and weight reduction all day e'ry day. It costs less to train a magically adept soldier than to send out gear that costs 2 years of that soldier's wages and the person is more versatile. Basically nothing changes except soldiers wear less gear and armor & jets will have fewer electronics.

>It's like DND and only a select few do shit with it but when they do you better not fuck around
It'd be like the big non-nuclear weapons of right now. MOABs and shit. 99% of the time it'd be a lot of nothing and then China would be all like "WE GOT ANOTHER FUCKING WIZARD SO IMPLESSIVE" and then promptly go back to being nothing. When Trump ordered the MOAB used, it would have been a fire mage. He'd pose for photographs and be like "Murika, fuck yeah!" and then glass the place.

>40K where it's reality warping but demons and shit come through if you're not careful
Remember the special forces in The Things They Carried with the free gook starter kit and the dead tiger? They'd have magic too. You would read about them in books and have trouble wrapping your head around it. They wouldn't officially exist.

>What would warfare be like if witches and wizards were real and integrated enough in their respective national and ethnic communities to enlist and fight in wars out of patriotic fervor?
Going by Harry Potter, wizards can appear basically anywhere, mind control / memory alter anyone and designate territory that is absolutely imperceptible and inaccessible to non-magical beings. This makes the very concept of national scale leadership an impossibility as at any point your chain of command can be subverted and the only way to stop it is to have wizards loyal to your leaders to mount a magical defense... and said "loyal" wizards having access to leadership for said defense would give them equal opportunity to take over your leaders mind.
Even if your leader can secure themself with loyal wizards, their ability to use potions to shapeshift or control a loyal wizard makes it so any defense is precarious and that isn't even dipping a toe into the murky waters of time travel. All that said, that when questions of modern muggle weapons vs Harry Potter wizards spells comes up in discussions, people talking about Avada Kadavra vs guns or shield spells vs an air force or Bombardia vs a tank always gives me a little chuckle.
To me a wizard taking to the battlefield to fight lowly muggles is like driving picrel onto the battlefield so you can roll down the window and do a drive-by gangsta style. A battle between wizards vs muggle armies would quickly turn into a battle between muggles armies / countries puppeteered by wizards much the same way nobles of old controlled the common folk... except this time with literal mind control.
>>
>>64429055
I think the interesting question in Harry Potter is how muggle weapons would change wizard wars, if the wizards weren't too stupid and arrogant to use them. Voldemort's followers aren't puppeteering armies, they aren't using mind control to seize control of Britain's nuclear weapons, they're personally walking into the battlefield and casting visual range spells at other spellcasters.
One muggle with a rifle could have made a decisive difference in the Siege of Hogwarts, not because rifles are OP compared to magic, but because the way wizards are used to fighting makes them incredibly vulnerable.

The way magic works in unsounded, a wright can sling spells all day but unless he's very careful he'll cause agitation as spells are basically exploits on the normal functioning of the world, do enough uncontrolled damage to the area and reality itself can break, that's why they have one guy with a sensor reading out the agitation level in the area and declaring a "spell stop" when things get dangerous.
