Canister shot was probably never intended for "anti-infantry" use.
Imagine this; there's an ATGM team in a brick house 200 meters away
Do you A) shoot a sabot and create a four inch wide hole in the wall
B) shoot a HEAT round and create a 5 foot hole in the wall
C) shoot an HE and blow down half the wall
or D) shoot a canister shot and shoot a thousand holes in the wall

It's not really about "shred this one infantry soldier with extreme prejudice" but "destroy this lightly fortified emplaced enemy position with low margin of error".
Why would you shoot a dude with a tank shell anyways when you could just cut him in half with the coax?
>>
>>64432364
Canister was for clearing large masses of troops. You just need to fire one round down a street.

I think that's bong for runaway gun, where the action gets so hot from firing cyclic that the sear fails and the gun keeps shooting after you let go of the trigger.
SOP is to break the ammo belt and just ride the lightning until you're out of ammo.
Expert pro tip: you can't snap the belt of a Mk19, the 40mms are too fat to wrap your hands around as it moves. If it's mounted on a humvee turret, whatever you do don't unlock the turret ring before hand and jerk the gun up in shock, as a stray 40mm could fall down into the engine block of your PL's humvee and brick it.

Modern handheld smoke grenades don't use it but the smoke launchers on a tank and smoke rounds from large guns tend to. Aside from being a sneaky way to keep WP in stock, they tend to create a much quicker and thicker burst of smoke as soon as they're deployed, which is what you typically want from an emergency smoke screen or long range fire of one.
Still gotta be careful with hand-thrown though, it's an exothermic reaction so those fuckers get hot.

if you know you're going to be engaging almost exclusively armor it's better to not have any HE in your vehicle at all in case you get penetrated
American HE is remarkably insensitive but it's better not to risk it, and canister is inert and also useful against infantry and light vehicles

Wouldn't hurt anything to keep two or three on hand and it's not like you're going to come up against an entire armor division alone so you don't need more than that.

In basic back in 1990, after the Drill Sergeants finished up explaining the finer points of the proper construction and use of a fighting position and grenade sump, they asked if any of us had any questions.. I immediately raised my hand, DS Jackson had the "oh shit, him, this is gonna be good." And DS Bowers had the "oh no, what nightmare is Private Anon going to give me now?". DS Ammon had this "yep, as expected" look.. DS Bowers: "Yes Private?". I stand to attention, go into parade rest and ask: "If the enemy throws a white phosphorus device into the position, other than getting it back out of the position, is there anything I can do to make their attack more survivable?". All three of their faces turned pale, eyes wide. Quite a feat for DS Jackson as he's Black.. DS Bowers, his eyes locked on mine, saw I was honestly asking. He answers: "No Private, you already have the only solution, and the man attempting to throw it back out will likely not survive the incoming fire with the enemy that close. The sump and anything you have to put it under is useless against willy pete. The smoke will also overwhelm you and kill you. It's why doing that is a war crime, but yeah, it happens.".. Everyone in the room was dead silent. Later, a friend of mine mentioned it: "Damn Anon, what tortured fucking childhood did you have where you think about shit like that?". My childhood was different, even by X'r standards.

How long until we get canister shot AT4, or equivalent? There's already experiments mounting LAW72s on drones, but I'd imagine having some sort of one shot recoilless gun using canister shot would be useful in a lot of scenarios.

Sometimes when FPV drones get close to the ground and their targets, they lose connection and accuracy, they might also get shot down in the last 20-30 meters if the opposing side have some shotgun skills.

I guess grenade dropping drones still work, but they're not as accurate on moving targets or targets aware of being attacked.

It just seems like canister shot recoilless rifles could fit a niche on the drone battlefield. They would also be useful in counter drone operations.
