>>

It didn't.
The soldiers in question used after market barrels and the ammo was faulty.
Von der Leyen smelled money and wanted to make a quick deal with Saudi owned Haenel. End of story.

It didn't. It saw international service for three decades and even got a clone.

Just look at that trunnion and how it is embedded into the rifle and tell me there isn't a problem.

Most Bundeswehr soldiers didn't have a problem cause they weren't even competent enough (i.e. they are not good at shooting) to evaluate this issue

Me and some other dudes (conscripts) had administration duty at a summer range day so we were the last in line to fullfil our mandatory exercises.
The rifles were shot all day long while lying in the sun between runs.
We weren't hitting man sized targets from a supported position at 150m and were wondering what the fuck was going on, cause at the last exercise some weeks before we had a hit rate of 100%
That was in 2007.
Years later it dawned to me what was happening.

it's not that it failed
it's just that the AR succeeded too much
can't beat the economics of modularity & part standardization
it makes any other gun within the platform a niche gun
>>
>>64433426
It was inevitable. France, Netherlands and Norway adopted the 416, Germany had to follow. It was the most logical choice.

I'm still holding out for the 433 but since no one seems interested in it, I have a feeling it'll be an absolute stillbirth if they don't just scrap it outright.

What do you mean "failed"?

The whole premise of that question is wrong, it didn't fail. Just because something doesn't get to have the lifespan of an AR-15 doesn't mean that it failed.

Coming up on 30 years of service with military and law enforcement agencies around the world, still available in the H&K catalogue.

Built in optics are dated. Lack of ability to mount modern attachments (coti, lam)
>>
>>64434085
The optics allow you to reliably hit targets at 250m.
>>
>>64434095
That's not saying much.
>>
>>64434085
That’s not true at all, just take the carry handle off and put a rail on, the fore end has slots for rails. You can even swap the magwell by pulling a pin and swapping in a new section that takes AR mags.

>>64434095
I was able to easily pull off shots out to 600yds with just a red dot and one.

It doesn't matter what the average engagement distance is. Being able to consistently hit targets out to 250m is at best, the bare minimum expectation. I expect irons to be able to do that, easily. Integrated optics just suck.

It was actually a fairly popular option for American PDs until ARs became more ubiquitous and affordable. G36s were more affordable for law enforcement agencies (or similar in price) than a proven AR back during the late 90s-early 2000s.

GWOT vets trained on the M16/M4 coming back to serve in law enforcement and the influx of companies investing in the AR and essentially perfecting the platform pretty much killed it stateside.

>lets spend billions rearming the entire army with this new rifle in the same caliber with the same capabilities because
Make it make sense. Same thing with swapping out the M9. So they can have a modular gun and swap out the grip and slide lengths on the same gun? That only makes sense for a civilian who, for some reason, won’t buy two pistols but will spend the same amount of money on parts to convert one pistol into two different pistols. Is it just so the pistol can be 3 ounces lighter? Because that would be retarded.

Yes, I used to own one. Sold it as part of a package deal with one of my 36s.
>>64433351
As someone who has owned multiple G36 K and E builds, the trunnion isn’t the issue. Not once have I ever been able to replicate the Afghan complaints, even after F/A dumping a few hundred rounds.
What IS a valid complaint is the handguard lug position potentially putting pressure on the trunnion area when resting it on a barricade or whatever. I haven't tested that theory yet. If it winds up being true, then that means it’ll behave like any non-free-floated rifle.

In addition, the way the optics package/top rails slide on and clamp to the receiver is fucking untrustworthy. I know why they did it that way, but it will never match something like a flat-top AR. And with the insanely cheap construction of the old Hensoldt optics (literal airsoft tier where the optic tube is just pushed slightly in the housing by the adjustment screws like it’s the ‘40s), I would never ever trust a G36 optic or rail to hold a zero. Which is frustrating, because it’s one of the nicest service rifles out there to hold and shoot and clean and maintain. It’s just that the shit receiver mounting setup lets it down.
>>
>>64437987
I love AKM bayo and the 2005 aesthetics of cod4 and airsoft.
>>
>>64437987

>>64433351

>>64436899
>M4 feed ramps
>increased buffer weight
>constant curve magazines (such as Pmag)
>anti-tilt followers
>lower reinforcement in the buffer tower area
>lower receiver fencing
>up and down plastic handguard parts are symmetrical and can be interchanged while the triangular handguards required a left and right part
>crane o-ring to increase extractor tension
The platform got a lot of upgrades even if you aren't looking to accessorize.
>>
>>64437987
Isn't there also the issue of handguards not holding zero and thus precluding the use of IR lasers?
>>
>>64438324
From what I understand the flat top rail still dovetails into the plastic receiver.

So do I. AKM bato good. ‘90s/‘2000 aesthetics good. G36 also good, just has some issues relating to the rail. And the mags are fat.
>>64438571
I assume so? I haven’t tested that. Perhaps that’s why HKey handguards have that big extension finger that sticks toward the trunnion. I don’t know, I’m not paying money for an inferior mounting solution I don’t need.
>>64438324
The only way to fix the top rail issue would be to mould it into the receiver. The newest top rails are like this. They fit nice with way less side to side play than the Hensoldt package, but still, never going to be as good as a simple flat top AR.
Unless you mean the weird B&T gooseneck rail, which looks hot except for that stupid gooseneck.
