https://news.err.ee/1609837131/estonia-to-procure-south-korean-chunmoo-rocket-launchers>Estonia will acquire South Korean K239 Chunmoo rocket launchers to enhance its "deep strike" capabilities, enabling strikes up to 450 kilometers, the Ministry of Defense announced. Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur and South Korea’s Ahn Gyu-back signed a cooperation agreement Thursday to support this. >Pevkur stressed the need to target adversaries deep in their territory, building on Estonia’s U.S.-supplied HIMARS systems, with more to be purchased. The Chunmoo, akin to Poland’s Homar-K (with a 300-kilometer range), will bolster this capability. Poland offered training and potential system deployment. >Pending final agreements, Chunmoo systems could arrive in two to three years, with Polish training support. The deal will channel significant funds into Estonia’s defense industry. Estonia, already using South Korean K9 howitzers, plans to invest over €10 billion from 2026–2029 in air defense, deep-strike systems, situational awareness, and ammunition. So this is its 2nd user in EU after Poland, which makes it eligible for EU subsidies. What's so special about it? How did European arms industry get this far?
I'm super excited about the ASBM tbqh.
They have a super interesting looking origami winged loitering munition too.
>>64435237That's really neat, lots of wing area in a small package. Not sure if there's a specific term for it, but it looks almost biologically inspired. Like a dragonfly or something.
>>64435215just curious, but can this be used to target slow moving vessels in the baltic sea?
>>64436301Why not? It is not the optimal target, but obviously it can be used that manner too.
>>64436301yes, see >>64435223. I'm not sure why you would think South Korea of all nations wouldn't create a long-range strike platform that can't do that
It seems better to wait for the delivery of HIMARS rather than rushing to duplicate the same type of weapon.
>>64436383HIMARS deliveries are painfully slow.
>>64436383We’re having a rocket motor bottleneck since we’re expanding production on so many at once. Energetics producers are having to build out a lot of capacity in a hurry since we went from orders that were barely keeping the lights on to “How quick can we get back to Cold War levels?” in very little time. Pacific concerns mean DoD also isn’t in love with the idea of massive FMS sales on a lot of these since stocks aren’t in the best spot and they want first dibs on their own toys. Korea probably wouldn’t be able to break into the Euro market if they’d kept their defense industry funded better, but they didn’t and are having the same sort of issues so good on them exploiting a gap I guess.
