I recently learned that in the '80s and '90s there was a panic in Japan caused by an urban myth that people were being abducted by teams of North Koreans deployed by submarines, and taken back to North Korea. This was caused by random, inexplicable disappearances by people who had no known debts, suicidal tendencies, problems with their personal lives, and the pattern of people disappearing was completely random. This caused hysteria among the population about North Korean submarines, people being terrified to go to the beach near dusk, parents not letting their kids go to the beach alone, etc.

The Japanese government said it was nonsense. Just anti-Nork nonsense people were making up to try and explain why some people randomly disappeared. It was an fantastical story, the equivalent of Wal-Marts eating people because incidence of disappearances around Wal-Marts is statistically higher than most anywhere else in the US. Crazy bullshit made up by rumor peddlers, and people grieving over their loved ones disappearing.

Then in 2004 Kim Jong-Il suddenly apologized, completely unprompted, for the kidnappings of Japanese citizens from Japan by submarine and returned the few survivors they had back to Japan. The impact this revelation had on Japan is truly insane, but it's not /k/-related.

That said, is there any other event in military history that sounds as absurd as this shit, that no one believed because of how crazy it seemed, until suddenly it was proven to be true?

Funny thing, I think I may be responsible for that urban legend. Some time in the '00s, in the early days of /k/, I came across some kind of mystery/cryptid thread and was bored so I decided to write a story about encountering mysterious creatures in the mountains of Afghanistan, heavily influenced by real (non-/x/) stories I'd read from other people here so it sounded pretty authentic. The giant/Nephillim thing wasn't in it, my descriptions were much more vague IIRC, but it was the first Afghanistan military horror story I'd ever seen and the modern versions may have spawned from it.

Not an urban myth
Many Japanese were kidnapped and taken to north korea.

WARNING THIS IS A INSOFRMATION THERAD BY OUR RESIDENT SHILL FROM PONGYANG BASED IN THE US
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korean_abductions_of_Japanese_citizens

"In the 1970s, a number of Japanese citizens disappeared from coastal areas in Japan. The people who had disappeared were average Japanese people who were opportunistically abducted by operatives lying in wait. Although North Korean agents were suspected, the opinion that North Korea had nothing to do with the disappearances was widely held. Most of the missing were in their 20s; the youngest, Megumi Yokota, was 13[7] when she disappeared in November 1977, from the Japanese west coast city of Niigata.

Some of the victims were abducted to teach Japanese language and culture at North Korean spy schools. Older victims were also abducted for the purpose of obtaining their identities"

"Abductions of Japanese citizens from Japan by agents of the North Korean government took place during a period of six years from 1977 to 1983.Although only 17 Japanese citizens (eight men and nine women) are officially recognized by the Japanese government as having been abducted, there may have been hundreds of others."

>As they escape in disguise in a taxi, they end up hitting a police checkpoint and decide to just explain the situation instead of trying to sneak through
>They are instead arrested, taking to the police station and beaten, tortured and put through mock executions
>SAS commanders ask for authorization to rescue these members but due to the political situation in Iraq, are denied, due to fragile webs of cooperation in post-liberated Iraq
>Instead of accepting this, SAS commanders went to get reinforcements to go and rescue them
>Gets a phone call specifically ordering him to stand down and not rescue them
>Rejecting the order, the commander gathered 20 SAS members from A Squadron and 40 members of Special Forces Support Group and planned an attack
>Fearing a shitstorm happening, British generals send a mechanized infantry platoon to try and negotiate the release of the hostages before the SAS get there, they are denied and attacked by crowds instead
>SAS arrive and attack the police station only to find the SAS hostages have been moved already
>They plan an ad-hoc assault on the way to the new location
>They perform a perfect multi-entry assault on the new compound and end up finding the SAS hostages chained and beaten in a bathroom
>Post action the SAS members involved all threatened to walk if the government didn't give post-action authorization to the mission
>The government caves and gives it the greenlight, post-dated

"We have thoroughly investigated this matter. Decades of adversarial relations between our two countries provided the background of this incident. It was, nevertheless, an appalling incident. It is my understanding that this incident was initiated by special-mission organizations in the nineteen-seventies and eighties, driven by blindly motivated patriotism and misguided heroism.... As soon as their scheme and deeds were brought to my attention, those who were responsible were punished.... I would like to take this opportunity to apologize straightforwardly for the regrettable conduct of those people. I will not allow that to happen again."

—Kim Jong Il, apologizing for the abductions[

>The Japanese government said it was nonsense.
LIAR
The North Korean government continues to claim that there were only 13 abductees and that the issue has been resolved with the return of the five victims. However, the Japanese government claims that the issue has not been properly resolved and that all evidence provided by North Korea is forged.

By May 2004, five abductee victims and their families (10 in total) returned from North Korea. However, a number of alleged victims are still missing. Although then Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda commented on December 24, 2004, that "unless honest measures are taken swiftly, we cannot help but impose strict measures", hinting at possible sanctions.[

Seventeen nationals are officially recognized by the Japanese government as victims of the abduction issue. The sixteenth, Minoru Tanaka, was added to the list on April 27, 2005, following discovery of evidence supporting the assertion that he was abducted. The seventeenth victim, Kyoko Matsumoto, was added to the list in November 2006.

On the US East Coast there are roughly 40-50 active serial killers who are truck drivers, this is determined by the FBI who track their methods and how they dump their victims. Most of their victims are prostitutes and the killers are impossible to track as they often use drug overdoses to cover their crimes as well as their high mobility. I just told everyone reading this thread that all they need to do to become a serial killer is to get a CDL.

>South Korea never formally apologizes for conducting black raids on Japanese soil and barely even acknowledges that it happened
The more you learned about 1950s-1990s SK, the more I realize their word means nothing. They will complain about nips never apologizing for WW2, then you learn that 20 years later the ROKA did 6 Mai-Lai level massacres in Vietnam and never apologized. They complain about internment by the nips, but then you learn they had literal concentration camps until the 1980s. They complain about comfort women being kidnapped and sent to work in brothels abroad, then you learn about "Brothers House" where 200,000 Korean girls were sex trafficked by the Korean government until 1988

On the morning of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Capt Gordon Blake was the operations officer on duty at the Hickam Airbase control tower was meeting up with an old friend before work, and got knocked unconscious when the bombs fell. When he woke up, there was a large Hawaiian man standing over him wearing nothing but riding chaps, who helped him up. When Blake exclaimed that he needed to get back to the control tower, the Hawaiian guy threw him over his shoulder and drove down the runway, dodging Japanese fire. The Hawaiian guy was never seen again during the attack, and when Blake told his story, everyone assumed that he was heavily concussed and hallucinating.
As it turned out, the base motor pool was hosting a car show that morning and invited civilians from town in. When the attack started, everyone drove off to help the wounded in their fancy cars and bikes.

Idk how to tell you this, but like 90% of the ROKA officer corps in the Korean War were ex-IJA officer loyalists because they were the only ones who knew how to fight. The ROKMC was founded based on IJN SNLF doctrine and the early Marines opted to speak Japanese instead of Korean as an internal cultural thing. I also think Japan's anti-communism in WW2 is severely understated and surpasses Germany's. Post-war, a lot of ex-IJA/IJN guys fought alongside countries they occupied just for the chance to destroy communist groups like in the Dutch Indies. If South Korea got rid of them, then there would be no South Korea today. South Korea during WW2 was where all the wealthy families were and the southern peninsula only saw a single bombing raid the entire war. The wealthy families that lived there could afford to send their sons to Japanese military officer schools, but little conscription took place in the South, so the actual combat force was untrained. Most of the conscription and forced labor factory work took place in the North which is why they had such a good early campaign. Bringing this up to any Korean makes them seethe because they can't refute it. The reality is that conditions in the South were very cushy during WW2 and people were quite loyal to the Japanese because of all the infrastructure and social programs implemented. There were almost no anti-Japanese rebel groups in the South and all of them were concentrated in the North where they coordinated with the Chinese. The North is where all the struggle was because Japan focused all the military infrastructure closer to the front lines. That is why the North has such a large military economy and it's what pushed them towards communism. They have the real claims of mistreatment from Japan, but the South has coopted this struggle as their own because they want to appear like their families weren't loyalists even though it was the overwhelming trend in the South.

>Thx not reading the rest of that wall of text btw

Read it, rereading it, memorized and researching first and secondary sources. I'm on volume 3 of the collected works of Kim Il Sung, about 1400 pages. 1600 if you include commentary by North Korean scholars of Juche thought. Each one is longer than the next. He says alot about anti Japanese movements in the South and their Successors

They just released volume 67 of his works, when i get up to there i'll finally be done! Wish me luck!

I mean you can try writing a paper on all of it and try to get published in a journal, but it would require a lot of effort for a fairly niche topic. You would need to be good at academic writing, have some connections, and then find a journal that is relevant to the subject and willing to publish you. It would be a good resume filler to say that you had a scientific paper published though and you're already this far, so might as well give it a shot.

I've tried to get some of my stuff published, i got DEI'd from 38North since they would not accept applicants from people of my age or demographic range. I was told that i'm too old to even apply.

Academically no one cares that i have provable experience with things like live Sarin Nerve Gas training at the CDTF or that i know more about the DPRK than 99.9% of the US military. It really pisses me off.

I can write a decent academic paper, i can even get a few grants if i want and have done so a few times. Agricultural mind you. I'm just very much enraged by the lack of so called Foreign policy experts who actually study their opponents.

It's also easy to assume that someone that shares some of your beliefs is similar in other ways.
>I'd never send a submarine to North Korea to kidnap people, why would they? This must be nonsense.
Not helped by bad criticism drowning it out. If people keep accusing you of outlandish shit you know is wrong, then you might assume that about outlandish shit they're accusing someone you think is similar to you of. Because to be fair, it does sound fucking insane right up until it was proven. I absolutely do not blame someone for dismissing it out of hand in the absence of evidence, that'd probably be my guy reaction too.

They use colorful pennants to ambush wolves. It only works until the animal overcomes it's fear of the unknown and crosses the line for the first time. Maybe the water bag thing used to work, but stopped once dogs learned it's not a threat?

For what it is worth:

North Korea kidnaps people, steals, lies, cheats and counterfeits constantly. They also assist geocidal regimes, slaughter their own people if they oppose the Kim regime and help Russia. Not to mention the fact that the DPRK blackmails the entire planet via threat of global atomic warfare with their atomic stockpiles.

I'm so envious of them.

There are almost 3K of them at this point, the DPRK has a pool of blond haired assets if need be.

the USSR had a whole damn city dedicated to this sort of thing (Tolyatti) and (partly connected to it) a gigantic breeding program which has so far remained unacknowledged
speaking of breeding programs, jewish genestealers do exist
