Any other retards pissing on tits today?

Post bolt guns, groups, poops.

Best poop group today

>over 10 grand to put holes in paper
>if the wind picks up your expensive rifle can't hit the broad side of a barn
>the muzzle blast of the larger calibers gives you traumatic brain injury
precision rifle shooting is one of the dumbest ways to wipe your ass with money. nice gun though
>>
Guys PLEASE help. What’s the ideal barrel length for a hunting rifle in .30-06?

26”
24” being a close second
>>
>>64442695
Fuuuuuuck dammit okay what about .308?
>>
So is there anything fesembling a justification for this or is it just because some military use it
>>
>>64442610
24"+51mm desu
>>
>>64442717
What range are you expecting to shoot from? 18" is a happy medium between size and range, but if you don't mind a little extra length you can go 20" and really have nothing to worry about. No reason to go with 30-06 unless you reload, anyway. And even then, if your twist rate is the same you aren't getting much
>>
>>64442852
Damn. Okay thank you
>>64442854
Probably 300m at most. Also I just want .30-06 for nostalgias sake, it’s just a neat round imo. Just feels very traditional for hunting, which I dig for sentimental reasons. I’ve become stuck on the idea of buying a model 70 for the same reason, though I’m debating between the featherweight in 22” or paying like 500 more for the Alaskan which has a nice looking stock, iron sights, 25” barrel, and comes in .30-06 and up. I’m aware these are very boomer choices and geared towards hunting rather than precision shooting, but idk where else to ask
>>
>>64442889
Model 70s are fantastic. I’ve got a Maple supergrade in 270. 30-06 is a great choice. I’d go with the Alaskan for a bit more weight and the classic iron sights
>>
>>64442375
>all that shit
>plinking at 50 yards
no real ranges around you?
>>
>>64443024
Hell yeah man. The Alaskan looks fantastic and the 25” barrel is tempting, but I mostly hunt in the forest hills and agro fields so it’s a little overkill, not to mentions 500-600 dollars more. Not that the price matters too much since these retain their value. But the featherweight does have a 22” barrel and is much lighter, though no iron sights
>>
>>64443129
The actual range section goes out to a mile. I was just shooting a few groups at a little 100-yard spot first, you donkey-rapist.
>>
>>64443135
Guys have been using 270 Winchester out of lightweight pencil barrels 22" to dump rams in the hills forever. 06 has more space to complete a burn in a 22 inch pipe than 270 does. 22" is fine for an 06. You give up not much losing 2".
>>
>>64443211
Alright thank you, the featherweight is the more practical choice, though the lack of irons suck
>>
>>64442836
a fool and his money are soon parted. no justification for that. tripods cost less and are much more stable. for situations where you can't or won't use a tripod a cheap bipod, rock, or backpack works just fine.
Most PRS guys will use bags or tripods first. They really only use bipods when it's mandated by the stage. Very telling for how generally useless bipods when tripods are around. lot of guys keep 'em off until they have to run 'em for a stage .

Not a bolt gun or as accurate as most, but I love it. On the fence about getting a McMillan stock or EBR chassis.
>>
>>64442836
Taking a gun to do prs shooting in hilly woods environments. That's pretty fucking niche, though fun. Otherwise probably larp.
>>64443406
This though, wat. I use and see bipods used in prs all the time, though definitely not THAT bipod, there are other styles that are more stable if you're shooting off any vaguely flat surface. Tripods are big and heavy.
>>
>>64442836
Ckye-Pods are very nice, but all three variants are about 2x the price of what they should be imo. MDT charges an assload because they can.
>>
>>64443410
M1As are always welcome. Classic rifles.
>>
>>64443635
>MDT charges an assload because they can.
eh. like sure obviously this is true since thats how the free market works. but they are a niche item too and prices go up real fast if you dont got volume right? worked at a small american manufacturing business for a few years. fucking impossible to compete on price directly with a big player who can do 10x/100x/1000x your volume. gotta find markets the big guys wont serve and that care enough to pay a 1.5x-3x premium.

dunno feels like if this was a big potential ther would be loads of chinesium clones that did 80% as good for 30-40% the price or whatever. that there aint tells me almost no one gives a fuck. so mdt can charge whatever to the few that do i guess.

I just bought a tikka t3x SS 20" 308, and was wondering what scope might be a decent deal for hunting. I'm not likely to shoot further than 300 yards unless I'm hunting in a different area of the country. I could just search leupolds catalog, but there might be better options out there. If it's a good scope I might just put it on my loaded M1A as well. Thanks
>>
>>64444632
I'm new to the game, but I got a vortex viper PST gen II 3-15. Its heavy but it fit my price range of around $800 and I'm happy with it.
>>
>>64444632
I'm quite happy with a used leupold i bought for my 308. Its the vx-freedom 3-9x40 cds with the tri-moa reticle that my co-worker was getting rid of.

Its not fancy, or expensive (brand new cdn its over 700, but used they can be had for 4-500) but its held its zero perfectly. I dont dial around with this scope, i just use the hold overs and its helped send bulles out to 400 + very, very easily. After 700 yards things can get challenging though.

The rifle its on is a tikka t3x ctr in 308 and its my go-to rifle. I fucking love the combination.

Pic rel. Last years deer taken at 150.

Only tangentially related, but does anyone have any pointers for getting into hunting? I always wanted to go, but I'm kind of a pussy I guess when it comes to shooting an animal. Maybe I should find a friend to take me? Maybe just going backpacking with a rifle would scratch the itch.
>>
>>64444632
>was wondering what scope might be a decent deal for hunting.
Depends entirely on how big your budget is and what kind of hunting you'll be doing.
But generally speaking, a good quality 3-9x scope will work well in most applications.

You can have a reliable 1000 yard dinger for under 3000$ go watch Texas plinking
>>
>>64445310
Yeah basically, find a friend or find one of those mentorship’s and learn as much as you can from them. Hunting is weird in that it can either be piss easy and kinda boring (stand hunting) or like painstakingly difficult (tracking). Either way you’re gonna have many bad years and duds before you slowly start learning the lay of the land and recognizing deer sign becomes second nature and all that
>>
>>64445310
Where do you live? Canada? US? Europe? East coast? West coast?
>>
>>64445403
Thanks, I'll see if I can find a mentor or something. I think the type of hunting I'd really like to do would involve some tracking.
>>64445410
I move all around, but I live in North Florida now.
>>
>>64445420
Tracking is pretty difficult as the only way to get better is to keep identifying tracks and learning as much as you can from them and from what’s around them. It’s annoying and you’ll be getting in the bush/forest often, but nothing beats identifying a heavy use game trail between a water source and a food source. To get started you really just have to go and find tracks and start observing them and how the animal moves and what it does. Just don’t piss off too many bow hunters lmao
>>
>>64443410
McMillans are very nice but you'll have to glass bed it, and they can get pretty hefty and fat. EBR chassis doesn't need glass bedding because it's metal on metal, but it's really front heavy and outrageously expensive.
A good alt to both would be a Blackfeather RS, you get the benefits of a metal chassis without as much weight for a better price, and the option of putting several types of stocks on, especially a SGA if you want a more traditional look.
>>
>>64444134

Congrats on the moose as well anon
>>
>>64445512
Yeah I'm super conflicted on it. I like the way the McMillan looks the most, but as you said it will require bedding which has its own maintenance issue. The stock I have is bedded now and is very nice but every time I get a ding or gouge in it I die inside a little. When it comes to cost, McMillans are almost as much as Sages after the bedding.
