I'm reading bong memoirs of Afghanistan in my quest to understand what the fuck we were trying to do there and they're all like
>We had the WMIK Uparmoured Jalopy! This was an awesome piece of kit with the INSANE FIREPOWER of TWO GPMG Machine Guns! These were much more powerful than the Bren guns and SMLEs we were used to. The taliban had no chance against the mighty guns of the Mobile Awesome Fire Support Group!
>The MOD has pulled out all the stops and has issued one (1) pair of binoculars per platoon. It was amazing! We could see for miles! We could SEE EVERYTHING!
It's actually quite endearing how excited they seem to get over the scraps their MOD chucked at them. Great soldiers, they deserve a better nation to defend.

Amazing what mil procurement becomes when half the national budget is eaten by free healthcare.

One of the best books I've ever read, really enjoyed it. It and House to House are probably my favorite two.

I don't want to criticize the books, I just found the british level of excitement never really seemed to match what they actually had.

Oh no, I completely get it. It is genuinely common attitude/situation among Commonwealth troops as a whole. 'Do unrealistic things with what you have'. You're used to having -fuck all- to complete your mission with, so when you do get the Greeny-goggles Darkviewer secret edition (Now made of cardboard!) and you get excited about having NVG's, the rest of the world looks at you like you're retarded. Because it *is* retarded, but that's how it goes. Ask any Brit, Canadian or Australian.
Mind you, as an Ausfag our kit has gotten pretty good over the last couple of decades so... hooray I guess?
