The Sharpest General on /k/ - Spooktober Edition

This thread is about the appreciation of knives and their design, their history, and the engineering and materials that are required to make a functioning blade.

"I want a knife recommendation."
Answer the following:
>Fixed or folding (or both (or neither))?
>Intended use/misuse?
>Blade length/girth?
>Local laws to ignore?
>You can afford this knife! Think of how much money you spend on food and water. Do you really need it? What about home heating? You can just turn it off and spend all that money on a knife! Do you really NEED to not freeze to death? Stop being a big baby, you can afford this knife!

posted in other thread but: i want a small edc fixed blade. crk inyoni would be perfect if it was small, its probably bigger than what id carry.
>miusa
>hollow ground
>good sheath
>but, too big
big idea design Lookout is closer in size to what i want but chinesium and probably overpriced
>good size and shape
>good sheath
>but, chinese and not hollow ground
so, is there a happy medium i should buy, ideally:
>miusa or other 1st world place
>good pocketable kydex or leather w/ pockt clip sheath
>hollow ground
>small, ~2.5"-3.25"

I'm looking for a folding knife for EDC, something thin and light. My previous was a Kizer Feist in titanium and I really liked it, but it disappeared in a move. I'm looking to spend maybe $50-60 but I'll look at anything up to $200 if it's interesting.
>>
>>64451332
One of the worst generals, but that is a beautiful knife. Nice op pic.

I'm on month 3 carrying my Guardian Tactical Scout. I like the aesthetics of the Ultratech gen 4 more, but the Scout is just a better knife in every way related to actual function, while being cheaper. At $275, it really is the best dollar for dollar otf I've ever bought. Better than Axial and Microtech. Strongly recommend the Scout for anyone thinking about an otf. Thanks for reading my blog.
>>
>>64451561
Funny, the only one I purchased with my own money was the microtech. And even I think it’s overpriced for what it is.
>without style
Somehow I new the first response I’d get would be from a fashion fag

Kershaw Leek is one of my favorite form factors for thin and light. I switch between a Ka-Bar Dozier if I want something a little bit bigger. Both are pretty budget (or used to be)

Fixed

Camping, food prep, possibly fishing
>Blade length
IDK, 3.5-4.5"?
>Local laws
No cops in the woods

250euro (I can buy in USA if there is a much better deals)

Looking for a "very good" knife that's not ugly like a Mora.

So far considering:
>LionSteel M4 MagnaCut
>White River Firecraft Puukko FC-PKO
>White River Firecraft 3.5 Pro
>White River Ursus Cub MagnaCut

Sounds overpriced.
>>
>>64453699
crk is 20 years behind in machining, they were revolutionary at the time but no longer. These are $400 knives marked up to 575-675 to tax boomers. That said I still like my Sebenzas.
>>
>>64453868
althought outdated, crk still does things i just wish everyone would do. just 3 bolts each side, nice and chunky, hard to strip, easy for disassembly... it's a minuscule luxury that should just be on every knife. meanwhile the industry seems fine with putting 12 soft tiny awful t6 screws in every handle.

I take it then it's a ZBP model? have you seen the "Gen4" prices, the ones without the ZBP mechanism? Lots of places are having a Gen2 sale, I'd recommend you at least check out how the firing compares between the Gens.

>>64452303
Keep forgetting to pick one up...

>>64454016
>12 soft tiny awful t6 screws
*shudders in SOCOMs* Fucking hated those screws. That's one reason I never bought one.
>>
>>64454417

>>
>>64451332
I think I have a cheap copy of that knife
>>
>>64454832
nta it's clearly a gen 3 ct tanto, so no zbp mechanism. quite expensive for an aluminum m390 knife, although still looks like a bargain if you compare it to the benchmade infidel.

anybody bought from https://www.tenableknives.com/ before?

The prices should've been your first clue...

>>64455292
I didn't recognize any of the other knives nor their general size, in my defense. CT's too big for my hands, and yeah, fuck that price lol.
>>
>>64455701
id say $50 is a decent price for some knives depending on the steel
anything before $30 is definitely chinesium levels though
>>
>>64455680
There are some chinese companies that make very high quality knives, not everything from china is trash. What's the company?
>>
>>64455680
BladeHQ and Knifecenter sell Tenable knives so you should be fine as long as it's the company's actual site
>>
>>64455807
its the link i included, that store has some knives that have pretty solid reviews from knife youtubers that have a lot of knowledge
one knife for example is the Raven
https://www.tenableknives.com/collections/raven
I bought the Fenrir

Yeah I saw the link but the specific knife matters since they may not all be same oem. To be fair, idk how you thought you weren't getting a chinese knife at that price with those materials. It looks like that particular knife is made under Kansept's budget brand of knives. I'm not too familiar with Kansept's budget line, but they make great premium knives, and if it's anything like Civivi is to WE KNIFE, you haven't got anything to worry about.

Try to understand that China isn't always cheap because it's low quality, but because there are certain advantages they enjoy over other countries by being THE manufacturing powerhouse of earth. High-end CNC time is cheap as chips over there compared to just about anywhere; tools and parts are readily available wholesale and produced domestically. Materials are plentiful, also, almost all knife production happens in a single city (Yangjiang) known for knife manufacturing, which means there's a truly vast pool of workers experienced with the industry for any company to pull from who can just do the job, much different compared to say, shops that open up in random towns in the west. All these cost savings add up. I have high-end chinese knives in my collection, and they're just as good as my premium USA production knives. And when it comes to good budget knives, China (and Taiwan) give the most for the $$$.

That being said there ARE a lot of complete dog shit knives coming out of China, I've seen them, but that one does not seem to be one of them after some cursory research

Picrel some of my favs from China. atr design, Bestech OEM. Beautiful things.

Debatable.

I have a Tenable Raven in 14c28n

It's tacticool
>>
>>64455753
$50 is great for D2 but once you start advertising S30V and NitroV for only $50, it hits the "too good to be true" pricing. If you saw an ad for an Ultratech for $50, would you think it's real?

>>64455840
The Fenrir does look nice...
>>
My jaakaripuko from varusteleka and I have a skinner from brazil. Plus a machete kukri-like won't even need any other knives.

friend bought one of those adjustable angle worksharp guided systems (with the rods, not the electric stuff). pretty cool, brought a relatively blunt Wenger back to shaving sharp in like 10 minutes. though it isn't perfect for such narrow classic blades.
>>
>>64458770
They're ok, but freehand sharpening on a stone will get much better results and allow your buddy to do cool party tricks like taking a dull knife, swiping it on a coffee mug base a few times, and then shaving hairs with it.
>>
>>64459070
He should start by shaving his neck, hard.
>>
>>64451704
Maybe but that guy is a custom maker or borderline custom. You should just email him and ask.
>>
>>64453241
Fire craft 3.5 is a wonky little knife. I got one in s30v and love it but the handle definitely isn’t for everyone. Out of your list I’d go Ursus cub. Handle is very comfortable, steel is great, and fit and finish is fantastic. White river is one of the best production knife makers in the business right now. If you want to go balls to the wall crazy check out wenger knives, adventure sworn knives or as forge knives. Also heard good things about Very Good Knife co.
>>
>>64459460
NGL I do that and everyone panics, it's entertaining as hell.
>>
Whatever steel you think you're getting in chinese knives, know that it isn't. Never trust chinese metals, they'll show and tell one thing and make it out of something else. There's a reason no high end manufacturer uses chinese steel or aluminium.
>>
>>64459861
is there any way to even tell what kinda steel you got?
>>
>>64459551
TY, I'm pretty much between Ursus Cub & Lionsteel M4 now.

The Ursus is winning my heart by a tiny margin.

I have a Hitler youth knife. My wife is forcing me to sell it after trying to get me to destroy it because shes jewish and it bothers her. What can I get for it?
>>
>>64460196
Send the entire blade off for destructive testing.

>>64460967
Well, it'll depend on the condition. How tall is she and how much does she weigh?
>>
>>64456226
I have a WE Banter S35V that is easily as good as any Spyderco or Benchmade I have.
>>
>>64460991

I think there are XRF guns that can tell you the composition without destructive testing.
