Is it better to hold a metal pipe in the middle rather than at the end? I was messing around with my removed bike handlebar and idk if it's because it's short, wider in the middle and aluminium but it flicks around very easy when held in the middle. Felt like Jackie Chan.

I have also heard that short bats such as rounders bats are more effective in combat than baseball bats for this reason. Is this true?

I've got a hillwalking stick someone gave me and had similar idle thoughts when carrying it.

Not like the handle is a proper warhammer-head, its kind of softer material than metal.
Feels like alot of the impact of the swing would be wasted if you held it by the other end.

Is it better to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? Or to take up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them?

You can learn about the center of mass.
Anyhow you can add a pommel to get closer to the end

there are real techniques developed for fighting with simple poles
usually, you hold it on the end, with one hand near the middle, like a sword for striking
middle grips like you are in a robin hood film are for when you get closer so you can more easily manipulate the stick
