Are you team steam or team electric?
>>
>>64458278
Seems like electric isn't quite there yet
inb4 china
implessive
>>
Carriers are outdated, and so are manned aircraft.
Just use drones.
>>
>>64458302
It's only gonna get better. It's been doing 600 launches per failure as opposed to 3200 for steam and CVN 79 should have double the reliability. We were just used to extremely high reliability.
>>
File: potato.png (260 KB, 443x429)

260 KB PNG
That topic already is and will remain tainted for a few years, not worth a discussion.
>>
>>64458347
I can certainly see that on the surface the technology seems promising, but the truth is that it's really not my area of expertise so I'll just defer to the dod, executive orders notwithstanding they'll work it out eventually
>>
>>64458397
It's just damn near impossible to do a redesign of even the following CVNs that haven't been laid down yet, steel cutting has already started. If it was as bad as it was made to be then it'd be scrapped like railguns or the Zumwalt guns.
>>
>>64458347
That reliability is a stat that's very hard to ignore. In a real conflict with planes launching off a carrier every day that 600 mark is going to come a lot sooner than you think. Having a carrier that needs to fuck off every 6 months for lengthy contractor commissioned maintenance just isn't going to cut it.
>>
>>64458407
The Zumwalt guns weren't scrapped, the Zumwalts themselves were, making it a waste of money to fill out their magazines. The railgun project was scrapped after the Navy decided that their goal of a 64 MJ railgun was infeasible for the reasonably near future. EMALS is somewhere between those two; it's expected to reach operating goals but it's unclear how long that will take.
>>
>>64458426
It's not as bad as you make it sound, but having to wait 3 hours for the flywheels to spin down to work on the system for 20 minutes every couple of weeks is definitely a problem.
>>
>>64458426
600 is a failure after 2 days of absolute balls to the walls 24 hour surge sorties. That's not great but it's not crippling either. For CVN 79 and the proceeding carriers, you'll run out of bombs in the magazine and have to UNREP before you hit a failure.
>>
>>64458426
imagine thinking you or this orange, melted brain FAGGOT, have a better idea of how the entire MIC works then people who are in it

like you don't actually think they're unaware of that limitation? are you retarded?
>>
>>64458426
you're a faggot and this wouldn't even be a topic of coversation if the president of the united states didn't get up in front of our navy and ramble for 4 minutes about magnets, steam, and electricity

so I'm assuming you're basing your entire argument off the fact the president doesn't like steam catapults (because someone told him to not like them) and have no actual, real input beyond what you would just google, right? like you actually think the entire Navy command structure doesn't know how it's own boats work?
>>
>>64458278
Catapults are obsolete. Future belongs to trebuchets.
>>
>>64458407
Indeed, someone will find a way to just ignore the eo because it's just not sensible to change course like that in the middle of such a massive project, it might make it all the way to budgeting where the funds for such a huge refit won't be available, but I honestly doubt it'll even get there

I think electric is the way to go because you can tune the acceleration curve to get as much out of it as possible without ripping the gear off.
As for why the US ditched it I think it's mainly MIC grift pricing.
>>
>>64458347

If what Trump said during the Washington speech is true it seems like steam should be the way to go until we fix the repair chain. He claimed that the issue is if the electric one fails you need to either send the parts to highly qualified private sector people or have them fly out to repair it, while steam catapult issues can be repaired on-ship. That's a massive flaw for electric launch in a real world scenario if true. Even if the electric launch is more efficient being able to repair it on ship makes steam better for actual war scenarios.

That is unrelated to Steam vs EMALS but contract bond with contractors.
Should the USN remove all microwave ovens that have the same problem?
>>
>>64458696

Yes, of course with no question. That's a retarded thing to agree to if they have that deal with microwave ovens they should just buy other microwave ovens that don't have that insane requirement which would be a genuine hindrance in a wartime situation.
>>

EM launch works for China. Are you seriously gonna tell me magnets are Chinese sorcery incomprehensible to the white man, just because some beaners can't pass first year engineering?

Fuck all that. Trump is a senile boomer. Yes he was mentally capable five years ago. Maybe even 1 year ago, but in the last 4-5 months he's visibly tipped over the edge.
>>
>>64458756

Then maybe going forward we should only do contracts that are beneficial to our military being able to preform as a military. If you don't want to allow people on the ship to do repairs then you are automatically disqualified. If liability is an issue it's a simple thing to make a note that they are not liable for any modified system

If a chink defence CEO tells the government his tech is proprietary and only his guys can maintain it he's getting threatened with treason, in the US he gets the contract.

Too anti-capitalist for current year western governments that answer to political donors.
The government needs to be the ultimate power above all others but thanks to legal donations that power has shifted to corporations.
The clearest example is how governments reacted to banks breaking the law leading to the GFC. Switzerland, Iceland & China sent banking CEOs to prison for their crimes, every other country let them get away with it.
>>
The military needs electrical autism freaks who are able to rip apart literally anything else to patch up a critical system in a dire situation and this legal crapshit about IP rights in defense products is a shame.

The USN operates primarily Super Hornets, and it will be decades until the last of them are retired. There's no reason for them to rush to put brand-new fighters on brand-new carriers when each will have their own teething issues. The PLAN has two CATOBAR-capable fighters (J-15T and J-35) and both are brand new. They don't have enough of both combined to completely fill out their one CATOBAR carrier's air wing. They're operating their most recent fighters on their most recent carrier out of necessity and not because it's desirable.

>>64458884
Trump getting his way would mean cancelling the Ford class and building more Nimitz carriers. There's no way in hell that's going to happen. Even if work is temporarily delayed, the process of planning and building a carrier takes far longer than a president's term of office.

>EM launch works for China
Do they, actually? We've seen them launch two planes of questionable take-off weight (they were obviously not carrying any munitions, and I doubt they carried more than 30% fuel - just enough to launch fly the landing pattern and land right away), and we have zero idea the time interval between those two launches. Until we see verifiable data of them launching 100+ sorties per 24hrs for a week straight, at sea, with planes with 80%+ fuel and combat munitions load-out, in stressing conditions that actually mimic war time conditions and operations tempo, we don't know if their EMALs works or not. And going by the CCP's history of lying and face saving, they will keep releasing those carefully curated propaganda videos saying it's 100% perfect 100% of the time because CHINER STRONK!!, and never release the actual test and operational failure rate data, like always. Every program in Chiner is always on time, never over budget, never any development problems or delays, and works 100% perfect 100% of the time. Why? Because low IQ mongoloid NPCs like you will eat it up without any critical thought, and run around the internet screaming CHINER STRONK!! like they designed that external propaganda to do. They don't need to pay, when retards will do their shilling for them for free, all the while thinking they're so intelligent and immune to propaganda.

I don't doubt that the Chinese EM catapult works, but the thing is that EMALS also works despite all of the chink screeching. #Anon that doesn't know what is he talking about:

Sure it is you disingenuous chinkshill

#Me
80-90% of acceleration is due to the catapult, it isn't a STO with a ramp retard-kun.
The extra acceleration due to AB is only 5%

#Ignorant post
Those are fully loaded transport numbers. The share for a fighter is 70%. 65% for an empty one.

#Me
A catapult adds 100 MJ in less than 100 m, that is 1000 kN of pulling force and it's completely unrelated to the TOW, retard.
edit: upto 100MJ*

#anon tripled down with the the dogmatism, he gives a shit about the video
Right, and they use exactly that same maxed out number every time. Would not be surprised if the chinks actually do that because they have no concept of reliability.

#Me
>Implying there's only one anon posting that video.
It's a good clip because makes comparisons easier, regardless your emotional reaction.
#another ignorant anon that can't use google to explain the video

It is not a good clip because it is not an honest comparison:
>F-35 clip is an older steam catapult and not EMALS
>Bow of the ship can be seen rising well above the horizon, making it appear as though the F-35 dips more than it does
This is obvious to most people who watch the clip, and is why there are not in fact many other anons spamming your implessive clip

#Me
1. That simply means Type 003 EM catapults have more pulling force than a steam catapult of an US carrier, If you wanna make comparisons with the Ford then post a clip. I'm not limiting your freedom to do it.
2. The bow only begins to move up after the F-35 is around 5 m below the deck level. You aren't making a point.

#anon deniying reality instead of using google

It really seems like you missed the point actually, all your maths was predicated on the F-35 launch being at max power, pretty embarassing for you desu
>>
>>64464294
Yeah. He's just trying to weasel his way out after being exposed. Posted the disingenuous comparision footage, used the footage for his math
>It's a good clip because makes comparisons easier, regardless your emotional reaction.
>1. That simply means Type 003 EM catapults have more pulling force than a steam catapult of an US carrier
then used the math as proof that the footage he posted was correct.

That's why he's seething every times the test launch footage is posted.
>>
>>64458626
I mean, I think the biggest sellers of that point were bongs refusing to buy it for their brand new carriers stating as such 10 years ago tbqh.
That should have been the biggest flag
>>
>>64464019
Dumb retard, your assumption only works at max power, which it clearly wasn't at. Chinkshills, I swear.

I would ask then: "Which nations can withstand the first 600 air strikes by the US Naval Aviation wing?
Since the answer is 0, the entire rate of failure is pointless.

Bud it's autism. This is why you get stuck on a thing, short circuit, and schitzo out. You genuinely can recover from it if you go to therapy or something.
We don't hate you we hate you when you get like that.

I'd argue that he has an excellent understanding of the MIC, or at least its track record. The problem is that the big contractors figured out in the 60's that while you can make money solving the government's problems, you can make a lot more money by attempting to solve the government's problems. One way to correct this is to make a credible threat to cancel the program if it doesn't get fixed.
>b-b-but we've already spent so much on it
Successful entrepreneurs understand the sunk cost fallacy. Regular people do not, which is why they're not successful entrepreneurs and fall for the clickbait criticizing this, which are written by people that also do not understand the sunk cost fallacy.
>b-b-but you can't just fix a broken program by threatening the manufacturer
It worked with Lockheed Martin, didn't it?

All that having been said, I think that he was just working the crowd here while possibly giving Newport News a nudge. Or did he actually sign that EO after he made the speech?

>Yes i am that old, or at least old enough to be your real father.
That would explain my autism then.
My father died of age related stuff so you're definitely getting on in years and should factor age related cognitive decline into your introspection and confidence in judgement.

technology isn't perfect yet
but it's getting better
And the Navy doesn't want new Nimitzes
the new class will be built for decades
and the catapults will get better in a few years.
You're comparing 70-year-technology optimized to the n-th degree by an Ukrainian called Zacharczenko to brand-new technology with room to grow, with Zacharczenko still leading the way.
https://www.navair.navy.mil/node/22556
>Eventually, Zacharczenko and his family made their way to New York City via a converted troop carrier ship. By then, he was 14. He graduated from high school and earned a scholarship to attend City College of New York. Along the way, he became a U.S. citizen in 1953 and said he was “proud to cast his first vote for Dwight D. Eisenhower for president.”
>Recognizing the need to minimize demand for high-pressure steam and competition with the ship’s propulsion system, in 1982 he led the development of the low-pressure catapult, the C-13 Mod 2 “Fat Cat,”
>For now, however, he is focused on ensuring the catapult’s transition from steam to electromagnetics. Although EMALS will eventually replace steam catapults on Ford class aircraft carriers, Zacharczenko said it deserved a salute.

Rickover buried them alive and they should stay buried

EMALSv2 using supercapacitors and batteries should be on the drawing board by now, unless the USNavy is asleep. The batteries might be a big challenge for damage control, though.

I am on team railgun catapult. A railgun catapult would work under much easier conditions than a railgun gun because the "muzzle velocity" is 2-3% of a railgun and the total power involved is transmitted over a much longer period of time instead of a few milliseconds. And you dont need to build your rail to enclose a narrow projectile, you could have 1 meter between the rails so you could crank up the voltage a lot reducing amperage. And I believe this is exactly what the chinks did, which is why theirs work.

A railgun only has 1 moving part, the projectile, and there is no complex switching, there is just DC all the way. But you dont make good monies on the support contract if you make catapults that go forever without breaking. America is a victim of its own ideological derangedness where the government is a commons being gnawed down by profit driven special interests.
