Italian here, i want to start collecting ancient swords. How do i do that?
Go to armiusate.it like the rest of your country does lole
Didn't north italy have a lot of industry in the past relating to sword and armourmaking? Back when italy was a bunch of small statelets? Might be worth looking into those "brands" or smith "names" and see what you prefer desu.Idk what was popular in italy when it comes to swords though but it helps to be more specific. What is ancient to you? Do you like straight swords, thin straight swords, curved swords or what?
Auctions. Entry level: > Hermann Historica> Czerny's

>>64460682Hope you don't mind a slight hijack of your thread, Giuseppe, but let's expand this to medieval melee weapons. I'm interested in picking up a war hammer to hang on my wall. I'd still like it to be robust enough that it won't break if some dipshit decides to hit fruit with it or something. Gotta be something that can ship in/to the US. I live in Texas, so no gay ass laws to navigate.
>>64460693Entry level? What levels are there?
>>64460682Hey that’s like my sword
>>64461133That's how you know it's good
>>64461133Most gun owners in Europe are nearing pension, the gatekeeping is crazy too.
>>64461160Kult of Athena. Don't buy an antique if you just want a wallhanger and are going to hit fruit with it. Also infantry warhammers are very rare on the antique market. Most hammers on the market are the German/Polish/Balkan "horseman's pick" type. These are generally light anti-armor weapons, and infantry wouldn't have used them. The infantry type is heavier and longer-hafted.
>>64460682>How do i do that?Dig around and find one. I don't think any original examples are for sale. And if they are, they would be crazy expensive. Not many swords survive 2000 years in the ground.
>>64462210lol, no. Here you go, bro: > https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/a-fully-hilted-sword-from-the-urnfield-period-typ-38-c-1e75973b42>>64461177The really big-money items sell via the large auction houses, like Christies.Like if you want to spend $100k on a chainmail mantle: > https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-2015522?ldp_breadcrumb=backOr nearly $100k on a mace:> https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-2015510?ldp_breadcrumb=backThat's how the real "national museum tier" stuff gets bought and sold. Czerny's and Hermann, among others, are way more accessible.
>>64460691The funny thing about armiusate, is that we can borderline relate with the Americucks and their Gunbroker madness. The amount of sheer autism I've met through Armiusate is insane:> schizo gun shop owners with passive-aggressive tendencies> old farts telling you their biographies several times in a row> "societal collapse in a year" selling his collection to buy rations> "ah sorry if it's rusted I forgot to clean it for four years"> Carabinieri. Just carabinieri> Mall cops going tacticalI can only wonder how the Americans deal with it.
>>64462294I imported a gun from armiusate this year, thank fuck I didn't encounter any of this, the Questura did take 3 months to approve the export though.
>>64460682IIRC collecting swords in Italy is a pain. They are treated like guns for licensing and it is a pain in the ass. I export anything I win from Czernys to another EU country first before having it sent to me. Italian swords are nice, I got a good 8-10 of them on the way eventually. >picrel is one of the jewels of my collection, an 1855 Infantry officer sabre (like OPs pic) blade that is 1.5x the physical dimensions of a normal one. Weight is something like 4,6kg. It was engraved which tracks for the interim period between engraving/blue and gilt and the more acid-etched relief decoration. Made by a Solingen cutler, it is tempered and everything. How and why? No fucking idea.
>>64460682>LOL GET A LOAD OF THIS GUYI'd start by getting used to laughed at by gun owners. Step 1 done man. You're on the way up in this world.
>>64461612Thank you, fren. And yes I am perfectly fine with a repro.
>>64461160Arms & Armor is one of the shops KOA aggregates, good guys. Tod Cutler sells warhammer/mace/pollweapon heads as well. Made in china but finished in the UK iirc. Wait for black friday he has huge sales. If you are in Texas though, Therion Arms is an OG 1st gen internet guy who still has an online shop. I can't validate everything he lists, but he is a central beloved institution of the collecting and pre-HEMA days. https://therionarms.com/
>>64460682you start lurking the websites for antique auctions
>>64461133>website looks like it was made in 2005You wanted ancient.
>>64461133So just like this one?
>>64462989I appreciate it, anon.
>>64460682The best way to enter into a hobby that you have reservations over entering into is to start small and cheap.Real historical examples from your part of the world is what you want. Bayonet sabres for smokeless powder rifles in the late 1800's is a good start. If you start with military sabres then your price remit will probably be in the 1800's to 1900's. Prices vary considerably and it is difficult to know what is really worth something at auction. If you just want to collect cool swords, just buy one but if you need a new battery for your car, that is probably more important. If you are a neet living with your parents and eating tendies, do not buy a sword.
