So why didn't Israel push in and occupy all of Gaza quickly? Why did they only make a move to do so after almost 2 years after world opinion was already against them? I don't believe that they couldn't have, Hamas resistance never seemed that strong. Wouldn't it have been better for them to only spend the first few months leveling the place with airstrikes and then blitzed in to occupy and seal tunnels? They could have displaced the civilian population to specified refugee camps (which mostly happened anyway) so worrying about rules of engagement and Hamas fighters blending in with civilians wouldn't have been a problem.
