The largest city Lagos is located in Yoruba territory.3/ The coastal regions are rich globally because of maritime trade and ease of travel, so obviously it's the same in modern Nigeria. However, the coastal south of Nigeria and West Africa was historically more primitive and backward. That's why the majority of them were able to be easily forced into Christianity.Since the north was actually more capable and politically self-reliant in comparison, the British had to cooperate with its leaders. You can't just create imaginary borders to box the north in.4/ If Northern Nigeria were landlocked, it's a direct incentive to invade and annex or settle the south. So there would be a much bigger conflict than the various crises that Nigeria is already in. More realistically, the borders would have never been accepted and enforced to begin with.5/ Throughout history across the world, people of the interior have invaded and conquered the coasts. It's already happened in West Africa before.6/ If Northern Nigeria merges with the regions to its own north in the Western Sahel, there's nothing that can stop it from annexing Southern Nigeria or perhaps Benin and Togo.
