How come western swords aren’t as intricate compared to their eastern counterparts.

For example the sword of guo jian still looks fancy despite being made in the bronze age

That s as useful as a decorative pillow

unimplessive post.
western swords are built to kill the enemy first and foremost.

>sword of guo jian
that's a ceremonial blade probably maybe but also it's so old that it's actually impressive that it is still in one piece and supposedly still sharp. and probably worked just fine for executing traitors or courtesans.
Pull up an example of a surviving 500bce European sword, they are just different in totality.

Western swords were meant to be used, and in great numbers. Picrel is a functional blade that could be mass produced, dating from around 5th-1st century bce. There is also preservation to consider as well. With very few exceptions were swords oe other weapons considered more than just tools, and weren't meticulously cared for and preserved as the easterners did
>>
>>64477423
depends on what you mean by 'western' Tutankhamun was interred in around BC 1323. we have examples of ceremonial blades from that time, but if you mean 'western' as in european, you must remember that europe as a whole only popped up relatively recently in the timeline of human civilization. not until after the roman empire began to degrade did most of europe even begin to emerge from a more tribal state.
>>
>>64477423
They're the same composition. Whatever material their creators could get their hands on. The majority of armies from east to west used spears because swords cost more to make. Samurai were far more likely to kill a peasant with a yari or a yumi than a katana and your chances of getting run through tatami mat style were low because katanas were expensive heirlooms.
In China, they had whatever pot metal weapons their local warlord could get. It was the same in Poland and in France.

They are, but in general the "western" tradition put more emphasis on the handle and scabbard, although not always (some viking swords, Damascus steel, Gebel el-Arak). Ceremonial swords (like Bronze Rapiers, picrel) could be vastly different and the norm is that most details are lost for being buried during centuries if the conditions aren't ideal for preservation (compare the usual almost-destroyed European bronze sword with the Bavarian Bronze Sword unearthed like 10 years ago).
Chinese and Japanese had some fixation for surface alloying or coating that was unique to that region for centuries, a particularity of East Asia are temples storing things for centuries, that's why Mao absolutely fucked up their history in the 1960s.

>sword of guo jian
The tomb sword of a king. Are you comparing it to other ornate swords or not?
>>
>>64477516
He's not comparing it to the sword of Charlemagne, he's comparing it to some random steel slab made for some foot soldier in large numbers. So, it's a retarded argument, and OP is a shitlord.

>For example the sword of guo jian still looks fancy despite being made in the bronze age
A major part of why it still looks so fancy is because it was made in the bronze age. Bronze is resists corrosion exceptionally well compared to iron and steel, and so we have a lot more well preserved bronze age swords around today than we have early iron age swords (in any state of preservation at all I think) around. Add in it being left, IIRC, in stagnant water with a decent amount of organic matter around over the centuries, making for a near perfectly oxygen free environment (compare with bog finds), and that's all you need to explain the sword's current condition.
I'm not sure how all of this relates to things being "intricate" either.

>Western swords were meant to be used, and in great numbers.
We have purely ceremonial weapons in Europe too, and I'd be rather cautious about suggesting we beat China when it came to quantities of just about anything.
>>
>>64477543
That’s true. China has had far more famines and widespread rapings than the rest.
I mean it’s not even close.

there is a reason why shitskins are bad at war
>>
>>64477423
The fancy temple treasure swords aren’t a randomly selected sword or the war implement of some great martial hero, they are ceremonial objects created to be ceremonial objects. Western religion didn’t utilize swords, axes, spears, etc in the same way, so any religious treasure weapon in the West is a religious treasure for its connection to a Holy event, and not because it was made to be so. And even the fakes that are ceremonial items made to be ceremonial items are fakes of a functional item. If there is a fancy adornment, it’s the reliquary made to house the item, not the item itself.

What's even the point of all the chinkspamming on /k/.

Not even chinks, the retarded and repetitive spam uses "designated topics/countries" that are combined with "designated templates" written by literal glowies for their groomered retards. They don't give a shit about the country in question and they'll derail any good thread related to those countries.
>Countries: South Korea, China, Turkey, India
>Templates: stupid comparisons, gaslighting, jak "meme", passive aggressive posting, etc
They even have a guide that curiously was deleted from web.archive.org, it seems they don't want to be observed without sniffing IPs (that "chan" has a malware .js to de-anonymize its users).
Their troll wiki: https://archive.is/xByHL

>>
>>64477672
Would it surprise you to find out that we know 15-22 year olds are retarded and we do understand the other half of the posting is a moron who thinks they're winning a dumb game?
At a certain point "implessive" became as much an insult, calling the poster on the level of an inbred rice paddy farmer, as it is insulting the actual chinese posters.
But mentally bereft kids can't understand that people's memories work well for a long time and we do know what a dipshit autism 4channet thinks, and doesn't understand.

tl;dr i play the part you think you want me to play while applying the insults you think I'm "raging" about to YOU. Knowing full well its more likely a troll as it is a wumao.
Because you're too stupid to understand long time 4channers played the same game, better, for a lot longer.
>>
>>64477423
That's the most retarded jian I've ever seen.
Holes in blades don't make it better, they screw with blade aerodynamics and introduce weakness and changes in flexibility along the length.
Most historical Chinese swords were fairly to extremely simple weapons, see the range of straight, single-edged dao that were issued across the millennia.

Practicality.

A foot is the main measurement in the english speaking world because its about the length of a man's foot.

Aside from what other commenters said about mass production vs high status pieces, you should compare like for like.
>looks fancy despite being made in the bronze age
Since bronze is much easier to cast and work with, many bronze age swords across the world were made with very intricate designs. As people moved to steel, the technology and level of effort required to make such designs out of iron meant that sword blade and hilt patterns were comparatively plain until relatively recently.

>>

It depends on the sword
Halfsven Rapebeard the Viking carried an unadorned blade (for all that it had some of the highest quality steel in the world) but at the same time big C was rolling around with pick related

This is Joyeuse, the personal weapon of Charlemagne the Great (or so the French claim).

Just switch them? Why did it take them so long to figure this out? It seems obvious.
