Is .40 S&W dead? I want to buy picrel but I don't know if I can afford to stock another caliber.
Not dead but it will never be on par with 9mm in terms of price againIt had a last hurrah during COVID shortages but now even cops are switching to 9 so the perk of cheap ammo is gone. Hollow points can still be had for cheap for whatever reasonThose early .40 glocks I believe have high round count issues with blowing up too FYI. It's in a strange spot because it's not a big heavy bullet like 45, not as powerful as 10mm, and not as plentiful as 9. Still perfectly fine caliber, just not economical to shoot beyond becoming proficient.
>>64551181The second pin above the trigger is there to prevent explosions with .40 S&W
>>64551181>It's in a strange spot because it's not a big heavy bullet like 45, not as powerful as 10mm, and not as plentiful as 9.pretty good explanationimo 9mm +p loads are good enough and if you want something really powerful you can always get 45 super or 460 rowland which can fire 45 super as well
>>6455115440 cal is still pretty cheap. It's not bad.
>>64551181It's main selling point I found when I was a die hard 40 fag was it's consistent penetration. It'd usually expand to a similar size to 45 but go way deeper and beat 9 out in both metrics. As a defensive round I still think 40 is perfectly adequate, of course it can't hold up to 10 but you have way more options for pistols with 40 unless you like 1911s or Glocks
40sw kicks way too much for what it is. anyone who replies skill issue or lift more or git gud probably never does rapid fire shooting in a bay.
>>64551638It's really not that bad, if anything 45 is the one that kicks harder than it should but then again all the 45s I've shot have xboxheug slides or have awful grips like the Mauser M2
>>64551678i had a 357sig p226 and it was just plain weird how much it recoiled.
>>64551154I only ever keep a box or two of 40 around it's usually the last thing to sell out when people start panic buying, I don't see any reason to stack it deep if it's not your only gun.
>>64551684Never tried 357sig, which is weird because it sounds right up my alley as a 40 and 357 magnum enjoyer. Like I know it's a dead round and all but the idea of mimicking 125gr 357 in an autoloader sounds pretty sweet
>>64551154If you can get a good price on it get the 23 and a 9mm conversion barrel. That way you only have to shoot the .40 if you want to and can stay stocked on 9mm. I wish I had gotten a 23 instead of a 19 because the 23 slide gives you 9mm and .357 sig with conversion barrels.
>>64551678I have an aluminum frame 45 and an aluminum frame 40 and I find the 40 to be a lot worse but I think there is some amount of personal preference to different cartridges recoil impulses.
>>64551154only mostly dead
>>64551154No 40sw is not dead. It will be around for a.long time. It will be manufactured by all the regular players for a long time. It is better terminal ballistics wise as a sd/le pistol, and a minimal dg defense outdoors carry for those who cannot, or will not practice enough with the higher recoil options.
>>64551283These pictures show higher impact energy transfer and resistance. That only translates to bullet expansion at these levels. Depth and ability to overcome hard internal obstacles (bone) is down to momentum. As the 40 will have better expansion given its larger starting diameter i would love for someone to be able to explain why the 9mm faggots think the smaller, lighter, less diameter expanded, less final depth, less wound volume bullet is somehow superior. Hint, it isn't.
>>64551688It really does not mimic it. On paper it can sort of kind of by the numbers. But bullet shape and construction, and real world performance the 357 sig is just +p +p+ whatever 9mm. It doesn't bring actual 357mag performance.
>>64551881In handgun calibers against humans you pretty much get no extra bonus with more energy as long as you're above a pretty low baseline so I don't see how 357 SIG would be any worse than 357 mag unless you're shooting at deer sized shit or bigger
>>64551875I take the unpopular position that handgun calibers incapacitate only through CNS hit or blood loss. Expanding bullets have only a marginal increase in likelihood of successful CNS hit, so I evaluate performance purely in terms of penetration. I want an exit wound, because two holes means blood leaks out twice as fast. A solid bullet with a broad meplat is ideal, as it suffers less deflection when passing through a hard barrier (like bone) and retains weight well, meaning deeper penetration and higher likelihood of an exit wound. For this reason, I carry .40 S&W because it penetrates better than 9mm or .45 ACP, without the added recoil of 10mm. A 180gr FNFMJ .40 caliber bullet has ideal penetration characteristics against human sized targets, and has good weight retention and minimal path deflection when passing through barriers like drywall/glass/thin metal/upholstery, meaning it can be fired through most types of cover found in homes and cars. I know the layout of my house, and I will wallbang the motherfucker trying to steal my toaster without leaving my bedroom. Same reason I have my HD shotgun loaded with slugs. I want it to sail right through.
>>64551912Remember, humans are deer-sized animals. Bucks of both species tend to tall into the 120-300lb range, with similar body density.
I remeber 20 years ago all of the gunstores would dump .40 pistols on first time buyers and noguns.I imagine theres so many .40 glawks and S&W still floating around that they'll be making .40 for a long time.
>>64551912Humans ARE deer sized shit. 357 mag has heavier options than sig. That are quite common and always have been. Mag also very commonly loaded with soft point over hollow that works quite well on deer and humans. Momentum is key in pistols and the mag has that over the sig. Add the that the superior performance of the commonly loaded soft points of the mag over the sigs commonly loaded ammo and its not even close. Of course there is a measurable difference in tearing of tissues on impact at 357 mag velocity over the common 9mm and 45 impact tearing or lack thereof on impact energy transfer, but they are negligible on actual terminal performance. That said, a little more damage IS more damage isn't something I would argue against.
>>64551181At least for now i see defensive ammo at the same prices or ever so slightly higher than 9mm, and training ammo for 9mm around $9(on sale)-$12 for 50 vs $13-16 for 50 of .40. Given a couple more years though .40 could definitely move up to 10mm or .45 prices for fmjs
>>64551283Conveniently Glock removed it for gen 5
It is not 'dead' and will always be around..45 ACP and .40 S&W are the two best handgun rounds available for self defense, urban combat and general use.
We use 45 ACP for open carry/bedside guns and 32 for concealed carry guns (and other fun toys like the VZ61)9mm and 40 are both dead.
>>64551944>I want it to sail right throughThen use a midget AR-15 loaded with 62gr bonded or 77gr OTM>>64551979They must have improved the locking lug[s]
>>64551154No they still sell it almost everywhere and will continue to. It's a very popular law enforcement round and civilian round. The 9mm (homo) craze is just strange because .40 outperforms it, obviously. It's a round with more mass and powder. It's better at things like barrier penetration and just putting people down. You come across a bear or giga[CENSORED] you're gonna wish you had something more powerful than a 9mm. There's also 10mm but it requires a bigger frame and has more recoil. .40 is also NOT for contact frames and especially not subcompact. That shit is fine out of a fullsize gun but starts to recoil all over the place in anything Glock 23 size or smaller.
>>64551881This is what I use for .357 mag and sig. .357 sig can't beat .357 magnum, but 600 foot pounds of energy is no joke and shouldn't be compared to 9mm.
>>64552490>midget AR-15 loaded with 62gr bonded or 77gr OTMI have one of those as well, but loaded with M855A1 for better barrier penetration.
>>64554434>M855A1Harder to source but well done
