>Over the summer of 1944, Lt. Pat Glover and some of his fellow soldiers of the British 1st Airborne Division had a short debate among themselves over whether or not chickens could fly. Glover took it upon himself to prove that they could, obtained a chicken which he named Myrtle, and began to bring her along during his paratrooper training jumps in a haversack. On the first jump, he released Myrtle at a height of 50 feet and she performed a safe, though chaotic, landing. Eventually, Glover found he was able to safely release Myrtle from heights of up to 300 feet.[1]

>After her sixth training jump alongside Glover, it was determined that Myrtle had completed the required number of deployments to be recognized as a qualified military parachutist by the British Armed Forces, and she was awarded her United Kingdom Parachutist Badge, which Glover fastened around her neck.[2]

>In September 1944, the Allied Operation Market Garden, a mission to seize several bridge crossings of the Rhine river into Nazi Germany via paratrooper attacks, assigned Glover's brigade to the bridge deepest in German-held territory at the city of Arnhem. Despite Myrtle's successes during training, Glover decided that under the threat of real combat, it would be best to keep Myrtle in her bag until he made it to the ground.[2] Upon landing, Glover handed Myrtle off to his batman, and focused his efforts on the battle, which had turned out fiercer than expected.[3]

>Myrtle was among those killed in action during the ensuing Battle of Arnhem. Despite the unprecedented fury of the battle, Glover and his men gave her a military burial before Allied forces eventually retreated from the Arnhem area.

Their being trained executioner elephants always pisses me off when I'm reminded of it.
Apparently some of them found it fun and after the practice was ended, one of them stomped its handler because it just missed making humans go pop.

Not as weird as executions of elephants though, USA has done some weird shit.

This is really a great idea. They're easily trainable and highly expendable while also being unlikely to trigger most munitions.

>it gets less strange the more you think about it really
The strange bit to me is how short their lifespan is.
The spend nearly as long in training as working and then they die.
Don't they have to be trained in-country to?

My grandfather insisted he was present for a test in which thousands of bats were fitted with timed incendiary explosives to be released over Japanese cities in the hopes that they would nest in vulnerable locations before their charges went off and spread fires more efficiently than regular bombs. He also said that there was some huge fuck up with one of the tests where they lost track of some of the bats and damaged a bunch of their own equipment.

In his letter, Adams stated that the bat was the "lowest form of animal life", and that, until now, "reasons for its creation have remained unexplained". He went on to espouse that bats were created "by God to await this hour to play their part in the scheme of free human existence, and to frustrate any attempt of those who dare desecrate our way of life."

Joe Kennedy Jr. died over Europe. It was an optionally manned B-17 that still required a pilot and copilot for takeoff. Thing was packed with explosives and the plan was to remote pilot it to a German airfield and crash it there. Pilots were to bail out after switching on remote controls, TV cameras and transmitters, and arming the explosives.

Echolocation isn't completely unobtainable for humans.
We have adequate hearing for limited echolocation in the right environments, you can train it and blind people sometimes do.
