Keeping a rifle in your car is fine, but that shit is staying behind if you run out of gas because if you have to go on foot the rifle is far too heavy for backpacking, and any non-concealable weapon will just get you killed. You just need to get out of the disaster zone as quickly as possible without drawing attention to yourself.
