And honestly, it's a good thing to kill SS. Modern times? Most you'll see is someone putting their own name on something with their sharpie for practical reasons. Tank names are more about personal crew morale and aren't that important in the long run to warrant putting it permanently on your uniform. Its not like a ship's name, different kind of culture.

The tank commander is a first sergeant, the highest ranking NCO in the entire company. Effectively second only to the officer in command of the company. There's a reason the other tank crews look to him rather than the new lieutenant for orders.

We never named our vehicles (USMC LAR), I think that's some army shit. Your vehicle has a callsign followed by a number that you use on the radio, and a six digit serial that you commonly reduce down to the last three when you're talking about it off the radio. I'm pretty sure this is how it's been since vietnam at least.
