fuso and her sister ship are my favorite jap ships>japan wants to build its first domestic dreadnaught battleships>they're going to be fucking awesome and we're going to name it after our country because it's going to be so awesome>they're not awesome>actually they kind of suck>spends the rest of its career being used as the dumping ground for people the navy doesn't like>ww2 accomplishes absolutely nothing>high command keeps drawing up plans where it'll be used as sacrificial fodder>keeps getting a reprieve because the ships are too slow/not seaworthy enough to actually make the trip>finally gets a suicide mission to act as bait>is the last bb to get annihilated in bb on bb combat>probably doesn't kill anybody>pretty much the entire crew dies

>>64611345Why wouldn't you want the tallest tower/bridge feasible on a battleship? As long as the range on your guns is the same as the range such a tower is spotted by others what's the problem? Outside of ballast/balance effects of such a structure of course.
A fleet gun battle at distances exceeding 30,000 meters was unrealistic for a number of reasons. Even with Yamato's rangefinder, Gambier Bay appeared as little more than a dot, and the smoke screen emissions were mistaken for hits.
>>64611405The Americans were like, let's just develop reliable electro-mechanical fire control and try to keep the topweight down so it doesn't roll like a canoe in a wave pool.
>>64611899you have a radar in your pocket?
>>64612812IIRC the spotting positions on Japanese battleships weren’t really much if any higher than on their contemporaries in other navies, they just got a lot more whimsical with their superstructure construction
I like to imagine Fuso and Haruna getting into a "height off" like the classic Monty Python sketch and they keep adding extra platforms to their towers.

>>64611405Does the searchlight really need an entire deck all to itself?
>>64612996She works out at the library.
>>64613005Considering 1940s' bulb tech, Yes.
As opposite to the Japanese pagodas, I kind of like the Imperial Russian battleship designs. One mast for a spotting position but then flat and all deck space dedicated to turrets. Then the Soviets refitted the surviving battleships they got and made some truly hideous stuff.
>>64613235this is probably a vision of the future with USVs
>>64611345These gigantic pagoda superstructures are proof that the Japanese were the only navy that was properly retrofitting its older battlecruisers. Most of that space was for new equipment like fire control computers, radios, rangefinders and radar rooms etc.
Delicate mechanical computers had to be installed deep inside the ship, and while the bridges of Japanese ships were tall, they lacked large rooms for communications and strategy meetings, whereas British and American bridge structures were superior in this respect.
>>64613019>light bulbsThey were carbon arc lights, dumbass kid. Jeez...
>>64613697Yes. And?
>>64613005The entire Nip surface doctrine was to max out their night fighting abilities and then engage America in a decisive night battle. So of course they dedicated half their ships to bulb tech. And then they actually did utterly mog US cruiser and destroyer squadrons using searchlights several times. By 1941, US CRUDIV commanders still did not know what those weird spinning antennas were on top of their ships.
>>64612812>Outside of ballast/balance effects of such a structure of course. There is very little weight in the pagoda masts relatively speaking, they're just enclosed platforms built around the existing tripod masts. They look a lot bulkier than they actually are. Also, as >>64612896 said, Fuso and Yamashiro's pagoda masts aren't actually that much taller than other battleships of the period, they just look it because the rest of the ship is relatively flat and sparse in comparison.
>fire cannon sideways>the ship keels over
>>64611682>probably doesn't kill anybodyExcept 3 guys in IJN Mogami that was floating around and fucking Fuso had a desk-pop at them!>at least they hit it
>>64611345Have a problem with pagodas?
>>64611345Ah yes, the Pagoda masts. The Japanese figured that the higher you make your masts the farther you can spot the enemy and strictly speaking, they were right. However, everyone else didn't like putting that much weight above the deck for stability reasons. Just another case of Japan being Japan.
>>64615421Nah, pagodas are cool, btw. why the worst Fuso sister is always angry?
>>64613005Don't kid yourself. The IJN had very effective night battle capabilities that were major problems to the USN until the latter learned to make real use of radar and destroyers.
