Did "cowboys" and people in the west in general actually fan their revolvers? I imagine most shootouts happened drunkenly and strung out on opium withdrawal in bars over cardgames so pretty close range where it could actually be feasable, but is there any evidence they actually did this besides cowboy movies made in italy?
>>64621294most gun fatalities from "gun fights" happened the same way it happens todaythe same way wild bill hickock & jesse james was killedso the lesson is be smarter and premeditate instead of being faster or accurate
>>64621294There's enough writing from the time talking about how it was a stupid idea to suggest at least some people did do it. Also we have a few historical examples of slip guns (revolvers modified specifically for fan firing by removing the trigger and altering the hammer).
>>64621294From what I remember reading it was a pointblank thing. Though they held the revolver at the hip level at the front, not at the side. That said most gun fights played out more like Wild Bill Hickok vs Davis Tutt were they shit talked each other from across the street before they each took one shot at each other. Wild Bill used his left arm to brace his revolver to take a aim. Tutt got hit and had died in a silly way by falling over, getting up, running like 10 feet then dying.
>>64622572>Also we have a few historical examples of slip guns (revolvers modified specifically for fan firing by removing the trigger and altering the hammer).I believe it was Wyatt Earp that said Hollywood fanning was retarded and never done. He did say that what you stated wasn't uncommon and worked.>remove or wire back trigger>hold gun with both hands>AIM the gun>use the thumb on your off hand to actuate the hammer to fireMany accounts from old gunmen come down to the guy that aimed won.
>>64622809>>use the thumb on your off hand to actuate the hammer to fireThat's called a "slip gun", and yes that was a thing.OP, read picrel if you haven't already, it is the historical source you are looking for and one of the best gun-related books ever written.
>>64621294>the westThank you for using the correct definition of that term and not the gay revisionist one non-Americans use. To answer your question: gun violence wasn't actually all that common in the West, and a lot of the mythology of the Old West Gunslinger comes from Wild Bill's travelling show.
>>64621294>>64622845>Wild Billoops, I meant Buffalo Bill
>>64622572>revolvers modified specifically for fan firing by removing the trigger and altering the hammerSorry anon, that's a machine gun now, you're going to jail
>>64621294Occasional reminder that Wild West towns had significantly lower murder rates than present day American cities
>>64622809Wyatt Earp was a huge faggot not worth listening to
>>64623685Well duh they didnt have a certain group of typical perpitrators, it was just euros, injuns, some chinamen and wayward hispanics
>>64621294It's crazy to see questions like this. Of course they did. They still do. It's quite literally the fastest way in the world to draw and fire any pistol. There is literally no faster way in human record. And accurate enough for most people to hit center chest at pistol ranges. A lot of people can hit a playing card. A few can hit a tossed coin. A slim few can shoot multiple coins. The fact that the best comp shooters post double, triple and then some time slower than the average amateur cowboy quick draw time should tell you something.
>>64624311The earps were notorious liara murderers and criminals. They just also happened to take law enforcement jobs as a side gig.
>>64623685>significantly lower recorded murder ratesFtfy, I'm honestly extremely suspicious of these claims. Even if the town based ones were accurate I have little doubt that the vast majority of homicides in that time period happened in rural areas and was likely never reported or recorded. I think the concept of the wild West being more peaceful than today is almost as revisionist as the idea that it was like in the movies, at least as far as areas outside of town went.
>>64624358If there was cattle, land, gold and silver or pussy there was killing in that town. The west was wild.
>>64624358>>64624363the vast majority of people aren't interested in violence
>>64624487Do you realize how many wars/conflicts happened just prior or during the wild west period? Violence was the rule in that period.
>>64624505The military has always been less than 1% of the population.
