Thinking about a 1911 for my first gun. Is Rock Island a good choice (budget is my chief concern)? Also should I go with 45 or 9mm?

if you're not in cali wali, get a glock 19 gen 6 once they hit. definitely don't buy a 1911 made in some third world shithole.

>Rock Island a good choice

its acceptable
> 45 or 9mm?
>budget
you cant afford 45 and if you are going to go with 9mm you would be happier with a doublestack gun actually designed for it.
>>
>>64632221
Get the 10mm, 1911 is supposed to be a hand cannon

Are they good? I'm a noob for sure, but I tend to think of them as plastic nigger guns.

I'm not, thank god. But I am in VA, which is quickly turning into east Oregon.

Yes anything by ARMSCOR out of the Phillipines is a good choice. RIA is one of a half dozen names they use. The Slide oft heir 1911A1 is fully machined forged steel, the frame is precision investment cast and they hold up well. Eveybody used to tell me (50 years ago) to start with a .22LR revolver then an auto, then the Big Boy. I never agreed. I started with an ancient and trusty Ballester Molina .45 clone made in Argentina for Great Britain during War Two. I never regretted the choice.
When target practicing you can see the holes or strikes a .45 makes. Also do yourself a favor and never pick up a different handgun than your own. Muscle memory is what lets you snap-shoot and defend yourself in the dark.
Also stay away from gun ranges - go once and look around at all the shit been shot and realize it could have been your spine or cranium. Travel to wild country empty land and be DAMN sure not to shoot yourself. Keep the chamber empty on the fucker until your ready to shoot. Use two hands if possible. Sit down if possible. If there are railroad tracks lay down and rest your head on one and brace your feet on t'other. Learn to sight using the SIDE O' THE SLIDE. When you fire don't move. You should be able to drop them in a five foot circle on the ground from 1000 yards away and you will have to wait 4 seconds for them to arrive. Fuck a holster just get used o sticking it in that small of your back. Wear real trousers and a leather belt.
Shoot the gun dry the first 500 shots to burnish the wearing parts then use CLP Break Free. Neve use penetrating oil it will creep in and kill your ammo. Never play quick draw you will shoot yourself. Never be in a hurry. But DO practice not wasting time. Don't let anybody know you have it. Buy a gun in-state fuck an FFL. Arms trader. Gun Broker. Usedguns.com.
Just buy it legally from another man, get a bill of sale. Midway out of Sedalia is a good place to do business with. Don't B a dick.

They are ok, but you can get better 1911s nowadays for only a bit more. RIAs tend to have a lot of rough edges that can be a bit sharp, but the guns are otherwise functional.

Between 9mm and 45 I'd go for 45 just because it's not really the 1911 experience otherwise. That or 38 Super, but ammunition in that caliber is more expensive. Same for 10mm.
>>64632270
Glocks are basically the Toyotas of handguns. Nobody will be impressed, but they are well made and work well. They are popular with criminals because they are popular in general.

for your first handgun, there's nothing simpler to learn with that's also as reliable and proven. this 10mm auto version probably hits harder than a .45 acp, and the recoil is only marginally increased from most 9mm loads.
>>
>>64632339
Yeah and you can shoot .40S&W out of it for giggles. Might have to change springs.
10mm is good - Handloaded .45 "war emergency" ammo and hard spring is better.
OP ought to get him a LEE LOADER an some powder scoops. a bullet mold and some wheel weights - an its 3 cents for powder and 4 cents for primer = 7 cents a shot. AND you don't have ammo purchases al over your credit card that way.

I love mine. Mine is a Tisas instead of RIA though. Highly recommend a metal frame for your first
>>
>>64632603
>Tisas
That's the other one I was checking out, looks good. I was only leaning towards the RIA because of the Hickock45 review
>>
Grab a Tisas .45 for cheap. They are good guns and use the extra money for ammo and Tactikool stuff if you want. Both the classic 1911 and modern versions are great.
>>
>>64632221
>classic
>multiple safeties to cover your ass from your own ineptitude
>all steel
>dead simple, no thinking about adding bits and bobs
However
>unreliable with anything but FMJ and good mags
>disassembly is shit
>not retard simple, you gotta learn shit like half cock, manual decocking, and safety manipulation
>lights are nice
Overall not a bad pick, especially in 9 (which is gay) since 45 costs more. However I'd recommend something like an M&P since upkeep is easy, they're cheap, and you can get it with a manual safety which I'd recommend for a n00b. However, if you're set on the 1911 you're not making a bad pick. I would also recommend looking into secondhand guns, you can get something better for the same price of something new and cheap
>>
>>64632691
For a starter 1911, you can’t go wrong. The expensive part of 1911s isn’t the gun so much as the ammo.
>>
>>64632221
9mm 1911s never work right. Anyone who says otherwise is lying either out of ignorance or malice.
>>
>>64632221
If budget is your chief concern, get a different hobby.
>>
ria is fine just don't fall for roach shills and their turkshit oh fuck they're already here

>>64632715
there's literally zero reason to ever manually decock a 1911
>>
>>64632833
Shooting is an incredibly cheap hobby. It's mostly held by poorfags, which is why they think it's expensive.
>>
>>64632715
>would also recommend looking into secondhand guns, you can get something better for the same price of something new and cheap
This was true before 2020 when boomer funds all decided to charge up the ass for them. Even pawnshops are over pricing their shitty 9mm ria 1911s
>>
>>64632232
Are you that annoying nigger from /o/ with the v6 challenger?
>>
>>64632221
No. I have a ria 1911 gi and I absolutely hate the sights on it. I was just like you thinking it was the tits until I shot it. Couldn't hit shit with it but could hit nearly perfectly with a tisas nightstalker.

Whatever you buy make sure it was dots on both the front and back sights. You'll thank later

Social media has primed an environment where this type of degeneracy is not only accepted, it thrives. Social media desensitizes and radicalizes even moderates into believing heinous and abhorrent behavior is acceptable under the correct context. Spend just 5 minutes on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, you will find hordes of these deranged people. They exist among us. The FBI knows about them but never acts until it is far too late. Western society is on a one-way fast track to collapse as long as social media continues to destroy minds and decay the culture.

Rock Island is acceptable. Don't spend too much on gussying one up with a bunch of replacement parts, settle for maybe swapping the grips and then get some CMC mags or something, and it's good.
If you want nicer sights, get one of the models which have those to begin with.

>9mm or .45?
You could kinda flip a coin, but .45 Auto or .38 Super are the traditional choices. 9mm will be fine.

>>64632281
>Are they good?
Overall solid, unexciting but very dependable. I kind of prefer metal frames as well, but plastic is fine.
If you want something that looks vaguely similar to the 1911, but 9mm and with more boolits, then look at a CZ75, it can match the Glock 17's 17rd magazine capacity.

>>64632455
>Yeah and you can shoot .40S&W out of it for giggles. Might have to change springs.
Would avoid doing that without an actual replacement barrel, if available.
10mm Auto and .40 S&W both headspace on the mouth of the case at the end of the chamber, so with .40 being a shorter 10mm, you're no longer headspacing the round like normal, you're 'headspacing' the .40 on the extractor, which stresses it.

>unreliable with anything but FMJ and good mags
Literally every gun is unreliable with bad mags, lmao, and RIA's feed hollatips just fine. For a 1911, a CMC mag isn't that expensive and it's gonna last.
That said, the 1911 is for sure an antique design and it does show its age, there are much more practical choices out there even if you insist on sticking to a metal frame.

Even an antique weapon is still a weapon, however, remember that people used to rapidly put each other in the ground in droves with far less advanced weapons than the 1911.

>disassembly is shit
It's not AS intuitive as later designs, but just push the slidestop out and don't idiotscratch it.

>M&P
Good pistols, similar to Glock except more ergonomic and good looking.

>>64632833
.22, 9mm, and .223 are all pretty inexpensive.

Yeah, he was one of THE just fucking best guys on guntube, an experienced, qualified, and no-nonsense man who did largely very practical tests and comparisons, he stood out as a beacon of honesty and scientific rigor, in a space absolutely awash with shills, idiots, and unserious bullshitters.

Sadly passed to cancer a few years back, but his remaining videos remain a useful (and frequently entertaining) resource for shooters still. One of his parting words to his audience was that:
>"If I have helped just a few of you people save a few hundred dollars on NOT buying stuff they didn't need, then my mission has been a success."
>>
>>64633296
I'm sure you do. Come back in 4 years when you can buy a handgun for yourself and quit posting photos of your dads handgun.
>>
>>64632221
I had a Rock Island for a few years. It was a genuinely solid 1911. I would definitely buy one again. Boomers are also idiots and can't tell the difference, sold mine in the parking lot of a Sportsman's Warehouse for like $700, walked in and bought a new CZ, so they keep their value well.
