Nice.

It's the Hesco 4400, 10x12 "gamma large" (shooters), 7.6lb. Note that these were suspended by the NIJ for failing a follow up FIT test so they cannot be expected to provide Level IV protection.
If you have $180 and some change, you can get a set of Hesco 4600s. These are 6lb and have the same problem.

I don't knock Hesco around too much these days. The 4400, 4600, 3410, 3610 (all models Botach is now conveniently selling after the 5 year warranties expired, hahaha...) suspensions were egregious, but they made good on recalls and replacements. Their entire current lineup is solid except for the 4800, which is underbuilt - this is a problem endemic to all civ-accessible Level IV plates under ~5.6lb. By the way, the L210 shares a ceramic strike face with the 4400 so, in theory, there are bad L210s out there since the 4400's suspension was traced to a batch of improperly hardened strike faces. SRT plates like the L210 are not subjected to FITs, so there wouldn't have been a recall. Are you still running the L210s or did you replace them with something else?

I would NOT replace the 4S17Ms with the 4600s. The 4S17Ms are heavy as shit, and the 10x12 if you got that is really more 9.25x11.5" so it's undersized, but they're dual NIJ / DEA-compliant and are robust Level IVs.
There are Protech 2230s for sale on Gunbroker. These are older plates that used to go for $500 a plate and were never sold to civilians. 7.5lb for a 10x12, dual Level III and IV rating, and tested to defeat .30-06 M2AP up to 600ft/s faster than base Level IV spec. They're "expired" but good plates don't really expire, that's just the warranty. $450 or so a set, no affiliation with seller.

I'll give you the pros and the cons. Cons first because armor is very sketchy and needs to be scrutinized.

Cons:
1. Gilliam uses primarily Chinese materials, although their armorfilm adhesive is proprietary and supposedly made in-house. The adhesive failing is what would cause delamination.
2. Gilliam has no NIJ certifications.
3. Gilliam is very new and has little to no youtube testing.

Pros:
1. Because they use primarily Chinese materials, Gilliam plates are really cheap.
2. Their test reports, when available, show solid performance. Pic related shows the Gilliam 1023 vastly outperforming the new Gen2 RMA 1155. Six hits of M2AP for the 1023, all under 44mm BFD, versus just two for the 1155 and the second is suspect.
3. They're very up front with sizing and plate construction, which is good.
4. Their 8002 plate is multi-hit rated for really heavy shit like 7.62x51mm M993 and Swiss P AP, with test report proving so, and is the cheapest plate available for that at $800 a pair. It's over 8lb though, and single curve.

Fair enough! The Protechs have a multi-hit advantage against lesser threats, a built-in trauma pad (hence why they're so thick), and have a ridiculously high v0 against .30-06 M2AP. They're objectively superior to the 4S17M in every way except thickness and an active warranty. I get the weight issue though. You'll need to throw some money at the problem to get lighter IVs.
Your best upgrade would be a pair of Hesco 4601s if you don't mind a thicker plate. Sierra has them on sale for $900/set last I checked. Active NIJ cert, 6.6lb SAPI M or 6.4lb 10x12.
People tend to jump to the Highcom 4S16 as an upgrade from the 4S17M. I wouldn't. It just got outed that Apex Armor Solutions lied and the 4S16 does not have drop protection.

If you're brave, Gilliam's lineup is in pic rel.

NV performance really just means
>can the dot get dim enough
>is the dot size small enough
1 & 2 MOA dots are good for NV use and while I haven’t gone larger than that I would imagine they’re less good and get in the way but idk since I don’t go for big dots
>>
>>64636982
The 1199 or 1155? First gen 1199 (4.4lb) was cheat ringed and should be replaced ASAP. Second gen is okay-ish. Not a very robust plate but light.
1155 is bad and 1155MC is also not great. The 4600s are NIJ suspended and are not going to stop M2AP reliably, just like the first gen RMA 1155.
Look to the Hesco 4403 for an 1155 replacement. 1199 Hesco 4800 or, if you can accept lost drop protection, Protech 9812-R1.
Do note with the lightweight boron carbide Level IVs that they're especially weak to tungsten threats versus their heavier Alumina or SiC counterparts. If M995 / M993 is an issue you'll need to look to other plates than the above.

Glad to help. 4403MC is a straight upgrade from the 1155MC. Protech 2230 is a straight upgrade again but you have to buy them expired / second hand.
A big move would be Hesco 4601s. Sierra has them on sale for $900 a set. Lighter, more robust, better multi hit versus 4403.
Also reexamine what threats you need to stop. Is Level IV overkill and can you get away with an M855A1 + M80 plate like the Hesco 3411 / LTC 19513? Do you need more protection than IV? (Gilliam 8002, Adept Colossus, surp XSAPI)

It really depends on who I'm working for. If it's some poor family, the most I'm going to charge is $50 to do some simple service work, and not make any money. The boomer will be charged anywhere between $150-$300, depending on how much he annoys more while I'm working. It depends, the range for poor families is older millennials and younger gen xers. The younger millennials who have kids are comfortable but only have a couple of kids at most. The poor millennials don't have kids at all. If someone is poor, I'll overlook their generation cause I grew up knowing what that is like. But as the economy worsens, I get less calls from the poor. Military Occupational Specialty aka your job. "Military" in this case is not necessarily the literal United States Armed Forces but whatever the equivalent organized force in your region happens to be after shit has popped off. Although obviously if anything did pop off the US armed forces are almost certainly going to be the biggest organization anyways (barring a 1861 style succession that divides the armed forces).

Not sure if im chasing the dragon here, but is there any point in getting an adjustable gas block for a 10.5 SBR? I already have:
>flow through can (Velos LBP)
>gas busting charging handle (GMS-15)
Honestly the gas isn't too bad, the charging handle does a ton of work. Before I got it, I would get tons of shit stuck up my nose within 1 mag.

generally the go-to for 10.3".
I would say if you can tolerate it don't worry about it, but I'm just a dude on the internet

crane spec means a smaller gas port, intended for use with a suppressor
>>
>>64639872
I'll take your word for it. Like I said, gas isn't too bad and I don't really care about min-maxing it

If we conclude that most people who would likely be considered subject matter experts on this platform that sell a product are going to give you a biased take (Reed Knight, Mark LaRue, Bill, Jim Hodge, Mike Mihalski, etc) then who would you consider an expert on the AR platform outside of Stoner himself? I've been reading a lot of Frank Wood's articles (Tasker Network) and generally like what he says but he's also painfully autistic about gay things much of the time.
