There's only one modern army on this planet, definitionally there cannot be a modern war between multiple modern armies.

Heavier tanks have better survivability in modern war than lighter vehicles. The uncomfortable truth is that a heavy can do 99% of the things an MBT can, while the speed of the latter is at best a nice bonus and at worse a detriment if it's being pursued at the cost of protection.
