I have no clue what training they received nor what their prior experience was, but they volunteered for that deployment and were sent there to accomplish a mission. Unfortunately, even Americans are just mortal beings, so while it is a tremendous shock to see any US military combat deaths, they do occasionally happen when operating in dangerous parts of the world.
