Self Defense situation with a cold steel recon tanto is my only real world knife experience. I have some of the other cold steel knife daggers they feel awkward and I have boxed, nothing golden gloves but some armature matches in my 20s and I couldn't see myself using that type of knife. The point of a scout carry left hand knife is to create space in a surprise grapple to draw your pistol. Although you would probably keep your left hand on your rifle and fight there until you have the space to draw your pistol and use that to win the grapple.

The point of a boot knife is to draw while deliberately crouched or to bring your foot to your hand when you are already on your back.

In general a pistol is an actual self defense weapon and a little training and effort will get space to draw and use it mid-grapple. Obviously you would draw before the grapple in a real self defense situation if you had enough warning.
