Kinda decent video about the Gettysburg F/A-18 shootdown incident, going over the interesting bits of the report they released:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkyplZNHmzQ

Here's the report:

Wohhh they had F18s during the Civil War?!
>>
The IFF system on the Gettysburg had been working intermittently for ages (page 23). Post incident, it was found that the cable to the antenna was degraded. Its just like with it was with the carrier, deferred maintenance that lasts forever. This is not something you fix overnight.

I mean, this level of organizational dysfunction inside the USN is not something you fix overnight. For all practical purposes the USN is a dysfunctional organization that cannot procure new vessels and cannot maintain the ones that it has and it cannot recruit a reliable officer cadre.

They have procedures for an IFF out situation.
They didn't follow those.

They didn't even take part in the briefing where they would figure out their fire and no fire zones, or get an idea about the strike package ingress and egress routes ... it's failure stacked upon failure.

Fuck they didn't even know where their own helo was, blinded the pilot with the missile launch flash at night washing out his night vision googles while he was 50ft behind the missile launcher hovering over the ship ... they're supposed to hold fire with the helo in a 1.5nm radius around the ship.

They almost wasted their own fucking helo.

https://features.propublica.org/navy-accidents/uss-fitzgerald-destroyer-crash-crystal/

Fantastic article that goes into all the bullshit culture that creates these accidents, specifically the tradition of working sailors to the absolute bone and 4 hours of sleep being considered a full night. It’s the same bullshit, I know it and I don’t even have to read it.

>exhausted sailors
>shitty maintenance
>terrible chiefs/officers that are either hands all the way off or on, no in inbetween

No other navy has the culture of bullshit that the US navy has. We don’t even have seats on our bridges because “the sailors will fall asleep!” They wouldn’t fucking fall asleep if a ship could be properly manned and everyone wasn’t doing the work of 2 people. I met with German and royal navy sailors and I was astonished at how much better their quality of life was, they had actual fucking down time, 2 hours a day that wasn’t just complete bullshit work, they could drink.

The USN treats sailors like retards that can’t be trusted with anything and have to be kept busy 24/7 or they will mutiny. It’s humiliating. Also ASVAB waivers

Surprised Navy didn't keep holystoning

Why the fuck did they give the ship with broken iff and broken datastreaming command of air warfare in the area at all?
This fuckup goes above this ship and its captain, lol
>>
>>64641382

"The Navy explicitly ruled out problems with any of the ship’s radars."

They do this so they can blame the crew and hide the fact that they send out half broken ships on patrols. The radar on the Fitzgerald was working in the same sense that a gear box that is stuck on gear #3 is working. It works but cannot perform its task.
>>
>>64639838
Of course! How else do you think they countered Confederate armor?
>>
>>64639829
Thats my standard watch keeping routine at sea and is sustainable indefinitely once you get into the swing of it. Having looked through the report I think there were more significant failures than fatigue.

>It's tradition

Wait until the Navy finds out about Rhoombas

>It works for me, so it has to work for everybody else as well...
Every medical study on that topic states that there are obvious negative effects of sleep deprivation (this includes sleeping in multiple batches), with effects similar to intoxication - but yeah, I can drive my car drunk most of the time just fine.
