Why do they sell pumps/semis and break actions with the same barrel lengths? Velocity doesn't change much with barrel length and pattern size is more of a function of choke than barrel length. The barrel length is more about the swing, so wouldn't a break action and a pump with the same overall length swing the same instead of the same barrel length? The receiver is going to be at least 3 inches longer on a pump or semi, probably longer than that, because the ejection port needs to be able to clear the fired shell
>>64639928>so wouldn't a break action and a pump with the same overall length swing the same instead of the same barrel length?Yes. Pumps and semis waste a lot of space in the gun due to the bolt. This is why serious hunters and clay shooters use a break action.
>>64640128>This is why serious hunters and clay shooters use a break action.>serious huntersno>clay shootersyesSerious bird hunters use semi autos because that third quick follow up shot is a lot more important than the OAL of the gunI'm a casual at both though so I use a pump action
>>64640180Serious bird hunters don't need a 3rd shot, meanwhile a double offers the advantages of two different chokes in the same gun.The only time semis rule is high-volume driven shoots in places where there are no legal limits on capacity, like say dove hunting in Argentina.
>>64640180I should have gotten this style of mossberg.I have the retrograde but replaced the stock with a LoP and comb adjustable one and the retrograde pump is way shorter and farther forward than this one
>>64640283I just disagree with you based on my own experience, especially hunting waterfowl. Everybody I shoot ducks& geese with uses a semi-auto. We kill a lot of ducks& geese. Unloading a 3rd burst on a fast-moving group of flyers is a huge advantage over just the quick two you get with a double barrel. It's also just... standard practice. To each their own, though. I sometimes use my O/U for pheasants
>>64640452Are you hunting ducks by yourself, most niggas have a crew that all fire at a flock
>>64640509Sometimes by myself, but usually me& one hunting buddy. Sometimes me and two other dudes get in a johnboat and float down the Green River to blast ducks. But that's only when the weather is ideal and our schedules align. I often pheasant hunt alone, though
>>64639928Probably for interchangeability reasons. While the barrels themselves might not be interchangeable the tools to make and store the barrels probably are.
>>64640283>Serious bird hunters don't need a 3rd shotYou've never been hunting
>>64643846>>64640283>>64640452>>64640283Waterfowl and turks are probably better with semi autos and single shots, but I'd think a double barrel would be preferable for the vast majority of game birds because having 2 different chokes seems preferable to having a third shell
>>64647241It’s not.
>>64647241>having 2 different chokes seems preferable to having a third shellIt may seem that way if you haven't done much hunting, but the third shell is absolutely the better option. An extra cloud of shot is worth a whole lot more than a slightly tighter cloud of shot. Trust me on this one anon, I've sprayed a lot of shot at a lot of birds
