So you want a way to generate the gas needed to propell a projectile on demand. If only we had the technology to generate gas in a confined space, without the need for bulky compressors or tanks to store it. Maybe decomposing peroxide in the presence of a catalyst, or some oxidation reaction. I am sure we could figure out some form of chemical reaction that could generate the necessary pressure. And while we are at it, why don't we put this reaction compound with the projectile, that way the proper amount of propellant is provided, and followup shots can be loaded.

You can build airguns firing large enough projectiles at a high enough velocity to have ballistics very similar to conventional rifles - but they're expensive, a hassle to use, and have literally no advantages over a comparable conventional firearm. There's literally no reason for a company to pump research funding into the project, and even if they did it wouldn't achieve much.
