Seemed like a neat idea and was marketed for maximum stopping power

Remember, it was a Winchester Silvertip that failed in Miami and gave us the FBI 12" penetration standard.

It was the FBI that failed.
Had they issued their men proper pistols like 1911s in 45 Auto, not meme eurokek guns with meme hollow pointed bullets, the term "ballistic gelatin" would likely not even exist today.

The only 22lr for "defense" I might would trust is CCI stingers or velocitors.

Really any 22HP is crap. When you're talking about mouse gun calibers FMJ is really your only option since 32, 25, and 22 expanding projectiles always stop short. As for silvertips, they're honestly not that bad compared to other JHPs of its day, but it suffers from what I like to call the French effect, where it worked fine 9/10 times but blew the big one and is now considered terrible because of it. Really though the major takeaways from Miami-Dade is bravery can't make up for bad preparation and don't bring pistols to a rifle fight

There are offerings with different powder like this one to market to people carrying pocket 22s with just a couple inches of barrel. Segmented hollow point do an impressive job on small game so if they could get one to go fast enough to segment with a two inch barrel that might be a solid choice for someone with arthritis or hand strength issues.

Yes, it was, and is, crap.
