I feel like it would suck to live without a Denny's _somewhere_ within 100miles, or worse without a Waffle House. But then to not have FAL mags somewhere AND no Tabasco sauce. Ugh. I mean, I have eaten at Denny's in the last year or so, not a big patron. I just want the OPTION to go or search FAL mags online and have UPS/USPS bring me sum. Mmm, waffles.

I have no idea beyond some basic info, but .308 semi rifles seem to be sprinkled into basic infantry groups as a NATO SVD type of role. Not exactly a sub moa sniper but it can reach out further than 5.56/5.45 and in many cases what you really need in this war is suppression so you can send the drones in or call in mortars/artillery.
>>
>>64662424
>as a NATO SVD type of role
The photos I have found so far appear to confirm this, M14s without irons seem to be used for basic rifle training and the ones that look like they're actually being fielded have scopes on them.

>G3 conversion first but a FAL version is doable
For MBRs I want to upgrade my 91 clone and FALO clone. The 91 with training bolt and a 50 drum would make mag dumbs afforable, and the FALO is a heavy bbl natural. 'Also rans' would include almost any PDW (Uzi, PS90, SBR AR).

couple questions for the scar owners out there:
what optics do yall run? I'm planning to get a TA11 acog for it some point, but opening the floor to alternative suggestions
in that same vein, does anyone have opinions, good or bad, regarding acogs? I've seen some stuff online about their reticles being hard to see in harsh lighting, but I can't tell how bad it that really is or how common of a problem it is
>>
>>64688998
What were you shooting out of it? I got one a few weeks ago and 600 rounds of surplus M80 for it so I'm hoping it will run well. I also got some dinged up surplus magazines cause the one they come with is apparently not very good.
>>
>>64689363

>>
>>64688376
No but I'm not an operator nor a larperator so I clean my guns before they get excessively nasty and I don't deliberately drag them through the dirt.
>>
>>64689015
The tritium acogs can have issues if you're in a dark place shooting into a bright place because the filament won't gather enough light to make the reticle stand out. Same for the other direction but we just put duct tape on the filament to cover it up and dim the reticle.
The new battery ones shouldn't have this issue because you can just crank the brightness to whatever you want.
>>
>>64689015
I have a TA11 horseshoe dot on a SCAR 17. It works well. The ACOG is a great optic and the BDC works well with m80 ball and slightly less well with 175gr SMK. As >>64689797 said, the reticle brightness can be sub-optimal in certain lighting conditions. I usually keep the light pipe half covered with gaffers tape because otherwise it's too bright when shooting outdoors in direct sun. But overall it's a pretty minor complaint. Keep in mind it's an etched reticle, so even if you can't see the illumination very well, you can still see the lines as long as there's enough ambient light. But if I were going to do it again, I'd probably get the battery version just to not have to deal with replacing the tritium every decade or so.

Yeah all of the reviews I've seen with this issue have reportedly not cleaned their guns and/or ran them uncleaned in extreme cold environments (winter brutality in Fi). I do tend to let my AR get pretty dirty (I also shoot it suppressed), but to run it unlubricated seems like dumb choice.

Wanna buy an FAL. DSA has this "limited edition" clone correct looking 50.63 with some FN parts. Worth the extra $500? I like that the receiver is not cut for a carry handle which I don't think other DSA PARA rifles are like that.
>These rifles are built using the following original FN Herstal parts:
>PARA Lower Trigger Frame.
>PARA Side Folding Stock Assembly.
>Folding Cocking Handle.
>Gas Piston.
>Belgian Style Combo Device Flash Hider.
>FN Herstal Receiver Forging.
Honestly I don't feel like any of these parts are worth much of a damn. If it was an FN barrel or something then that would be different. Also what the FUCK is this captcha I haven't posted in months.

Scar newfag here again - does anyone have any recommendations for slings? Not looking for anything crazy or tacticool (necessarily), just a solid 2 point that would be comfortable to carry it around with.
First batch of google-fu turned up BFG Vickers being well reviewed, but the mounts are really throwing me off. Would prefer something that isn't going to unduly scratch shit up.
>>
>>64707029
either spend $100 and buy pmm qd accessories plus a magpul dual qd sling. or spend $15 on a cheap Amazon sling that has clips. like pic related
>>
>>64707029
I'm using an OG VTAC sling on my L1A1 and like it. It attaches to sling loops by threading the strap back through a ladder lock, which is a silent, scratch-free and simple solution, the sling has about the right length & adjustability and I really like the quick-adjust feature.

You can find cheaper slings with the same features, and some weight + potential source of noise and scratches can be shed by choosing a simpler, plastic buckle for the quick adjust feature.
>>
>>64707234
>>64707379
Not looking to really cheap out on anything because I intend this to be my sort of "ride or die" gun. Between what yall listed the VTAC looks pretty nice, might look into that a bit more in earnest. Thanks for the advice anons.

Obviously, Turner Saddlery or Andy's Leather. Turner's M1907 or Andy's Ching Sling is superior. There is a difference between a sling and a carry strap, there are used L1A1 straps here:
https://camolots.com/products/vintage-british-l1a1-slr-rifle-sling?variant=43334347849926 With new old stock (NOS) available on Ebay. Mine fits an L1A1 clone perfectly.

Is a modernized M1A/M14 the most logical BR to get in the grand scheme of things? I know that this effectively makes it into a DMR, but the only alternative to me seems to be the XCR-M or roll the dice on a PTR.
>>
>>64718449
no. Not even a little bit. Its a fun rifle to have for aesethic and larp purposes its all around mid at at best. There is a reason we use to bull m14bros. Mounting a stable scope is a pain in the ass. Its overly heavy. Accurizing it is expensive. If you get a Springfield their is a slight risk of qc issues. Etc etc etc.
>>
>>64718467
God damnit.
>>
>>64718449
No, and I own an EBR. For the money you can get an HK417 or something that's much more efficient. The best thing an EBR does is being an EBR. It's still not the worst, but you can do better for cheaper and with less frustration. If you check the previous threads you may see some of my posts following bringing my EBR from a 3.5+ MOA rifle to 1.25. I don't shoot with a bench or anything, but it's really picky on what screws you tighten, and how, and God help you if anything walks out.
>>
>>64718506
It's rough on brass too, right? Makes reloading kind of a pain with it. Idk why anyone would honestly consider an m1a/ebr for any reason other than because they're really cool
>>
>>64718522
I don't reload, but I never thought of it, or M1s as being rough on brass. Are you perhaps thinking of a roller gun?
>>
>>64718525
Nah, I know those destroy cases with their fluted chambers, but I thought I had heard someone telling me this awhile back. I guess I was mistaken. Most semi autos will leave dents in the case mouth or shoulder at least some of the time, though, in my experience
>>
>>64718556
Yeah the M1 Garand will definitely do that. I imagine the M1A likely has a similar effect if you're talking about dents on the mouth, but I never thought of that as being particularly bad. My M1A tends to eject brass pretty far and somewhat forward, and I'm usually shooting the steel targets so when they go forward of the firing line I can't check em.
>>
>>64718368
Deo gratias
>>
>>64718556
>those destroy cases with their fluted chambers
It's not actually the flutes that are an issue, it's the huge dent the case gets in the side due to the violence of the ejection when it hits the edge of the port going out. The rubber buffer can help moderate this.
>>
>>64710701
>cheapo sling clips suck
That's why I like to thread my slings directly through the sling loops (as stated above >>64707379 ). It's as strong as the sling itself, plus no rattle.

>>64707445
Good idea not to buy the cheapest chinkshit, also no need to overspend either. I got the VTAC used for couple bucks and since it's simple and solidly made, it will probably last me many years.

BTW you can make pretty good slings on your own with elementary sewing skills and access to a sewing machine that's not entirely made of plastic.
>>
>>64718449
The most logical BR is an AR-10. Most people just enjoy older style rifles.
>>
>>64718470
As the others said, don't worry if it's not as good as modern rifles. That's not why we like battle rifles.
>>
>>64720459
Even then people really go full fps metagame about small arms when statistically what matters most is sustaining fire rather than absolute accuracy. Also Id rather not be improvised light infantry, Id rather have a mortar than a dripped out civilian market DMR.

You could put the wood on it and build a second shorter M1A with the EBR chassis for a Mk14 Mod0 clone.

You buy an M1A specifically because you want an M1A, if you want a "logical" rifle you get an AR10 derivative.

Bro, do it. Maybe I came off as negative, but I absolutely love it. It took like 2 range trips to figure out, but once I did it's been pretty rock solid. That's 1.25 MOA with my shooting, mechanically, I suspect it's much more accurate than me. I started with an old school springfield National Match rifle made with GI parts, so if you get Fulton, I expect similar or better performance. I also installed the chassis myself, and made some mistakes (or compromises with the gas crush washer fitting), so having it professionally done will be much better. Also, I had a shit ass UTG bipod on it that introduced a lot of yaw motion, shooting in the prone its been better than that picture, if I put it in a proper rest, I expect it would be sub MOA.
>>
>>64718449
AR-10 or an HK91 is a much more logical and sensible option. An alright AR-10 can be gotten for $700-1000 and have a huge aftermarket for literally everything and can be modified into whatever role you want them to be.
HK91's are more of a mixed bag these days but can still be gotten for around $1200 and have a very large aftermarket of surplus parts and magazines. Some fancier stuff like the extended charging handles and collapsible stocks can be horribly expensive though.
After that you start getting into the realm of stuff like FAL's and .308 AK's which are more expensive than HK91's and have a dogshit aftermarket where you'll be paying like $70 for steel mags.
Anything after that like an MDR or an XCR-M is expensive but usually worth the money. Emphasis on usually.
>>
>>64723409
