The only reason we don't use them is that it's really hard to make the gases mix the same way every time, which means the velocity is different every time, which means the accuracy sucks because you can't predict the ballistics of each shot.

Very useful for research purposes of impacts in the 1~10 km/s range, the kind that happens in space between spacecrafts and very small debris in the sub 5mm diameter range, and to study hypersonic aerodynamics. Military applications are pointless as there are better systems for the purpose, i.e. railguns, but then again for the time being railguns are a solution still in search of a problem.
