This gun looks cool af but is it any useful? Guess it might be better against an angry bear than 10 mm but nobody values his life enough to buy a $1900 gun for this purpose.Isn't such capable platform (gas operated with rotating bolt) unnecessary for 357 magnum, considering that 10 mm isn't much weaker and there are glocks chambered in it?Have you ever shot it? What caliber was it and how it felt compared to 1911?
Someone needs to make a rimless 44 magnum so it can fit in double stack mags
yeah
>>64658861I owned one and sold it because it didn't do anything particularly well. It's heavier and worse than large caliber revolvers and doesn't have a much larger capacity either. If you really want a big gun that you can justify as bear defense, buy a revolver chambered in something like 45-70 or 500S&W
>>64658879>heavierIsn't it what you want from a super powerful gun if you actually wanna hit something?
>>64658861it's unreliable
>>64658911it's not that super powerful dude. 500S&W has anywhere from double to triple the energy of 50ae. The only real advantage I can think of that the Desert Eagle has over the powerful revolvers is you can quickly reload it with another magazine, but that should never factor into anything in a real-world application
>>64658861It's a novelty gun. You buy it because it's cool, not because it's useful.
>>64658930>it's unreliableI used to think so until I noticed that all of the jams come from people firing the .50 AE version, and when they downgrade to the .357 Magnum version, there are no jams. The conclusion that I've come to is that it's a gun that's hard to not limp-wrist and that all those jams are just user error.>>64658943>it's not that super powerful dude. 500S&W has anywhere from double to triple the energy of 50ae.That's not really a fair comparison. When it was designed, it was meant to be slightly more powerful than .44 Magnum (the difference is negligible, but one could argue that they succeeded, assuming you're using two guns with the same barrel length). The .500 S&W cartridge didn't even exist at the time.>>64659183Pretty much this.
>>64659273you can easily load 44 magnum to be more hot than 50ae.
>>64659301You can, but many people buying these kinds of guns are using commercial loads. The sad reality is that handloading is becoming a niche subset of the hobby. Plus that argument of yours can be defeated by pointing out that anyone who wants more power than both of those cartridges mentioned can get a Desert Eagle in the .429 DE cartridge.
>>64658861>$1900 gunMy .44 was $1.2k with spare scoped .357 slide and mags.
>>64659322Yes, because you bought one on the used market. Didn't IWI stop making Desert Eagles? I think now the only way to buy a new one is to go to Magnum Research Inc. and order one to be custom made.
>>64659183This, 100%. It's a range toy. >>64659301If you want to shoot really powerful handguns you absolutely want either a revolver or a single-shot. Putting the magazine in the grip really compromises its shape. That's fine for common pistol rounds like 9mm, .45, etc. But shooting some super-hard recoiling caliber with a fat grip is a recipe for having the gun come out of your hand. A revolver or single-shot doesn't have to compromise the grip shape for the magazine to fit so it is much more comfortable to shoot.
>>64659313it's just not as good or versatile as a comparable revolver. you're forced to shoot jacketed rounds or risk fouling it. it's picky about what ammo it will cycle and less reliable in general. It's not a very comfortable gun to hold in the hand. I understand that it's iconic, and a neat novelty. Speaking practically, when it comes to powerful handguns I would rather have a revolver in almost every use case.
>>64659273IME they are very reliable, mechanically speaking. Where you run into problems are people limp-wristing the .50 AE, and also people buying the wrong ammo for the ones chambered in revolver calibers. A lot of revolver ammo doesn't have the right pressure curve to cycle a gas-operated semiautomatic because that simply isn't a concern for revolvers. If you have a deagle in a revolver caliber you need to RTFM and make sure you are buying the right ammo otherwise it jams like mad.
>>64659333>a single-shot>Mfw breaking out the Bond Arms Cyclops chambered in 45-70
>>64658879This is mostly true, with little variation.
>>64659347>it's very reliable>just make sure you follow all these rules and do a bunch of homework and only fire these particular rounds out of itvs the chad revolver>pull the trigger with whatever rimmed cartridge physically fits in it>if it doesn't explode, you can immediately fire it again with no complications
>>64659352I was thinking more like a T/C Encore, Freedom Arms model 2008, Remington XP-100, etc.
>>64659361Oh, I totally agree the revolver is preferable. I just think it's important to make a distinction between user error and design that's mechanically unreliable.
>>64659340>it's just not as good or versatile as a comparable revolver.Of course. Nobody is arguing that a Desert Eagle is more practical than a revolver, but trying to dismiss it as unsuitable or unreliable will warrant a discussion.>>64659368Agreed.
>>64659361>just make sure you never flick it shut or spin the cylinder
>>64659464Or drop it from more than a few feet up onto anything harder than a mattress.
what's the best value/fun bang for the buck when it comes to bigass handguns with magnum carts. I am not interested in justifying my purchase I just want to have fun and if it can intersect well with price, all the better. What's a go-to for that?
>>64659529if you can reload, I would go with the aforementioned 45-70 or 500 S&W cartridges. If you plan on only firing factory rounds, buying something like the smith and wesson 460 would be pretty good, because it can fire .460, 454 casull, and 45 long colt
