FACT: the ar-15 is the most battle proven rifle with the best overall performance we've ever seen

FACT: anything purporting to be the next best thing is still essentially in the beta stage (see SCAR, XCR, MCX) and basically *can't* be taken seriously. Despite their effort to quantify their qualities for example, neither Schizo Cabron nor A2 can really ever provide the massive amount of data provided for the AR15 in a single lifetime. The AR-15 (DI) has killed millions of niggas (probably, someone do the math) and fought in dozens if not hundreds of conflicts.

There is nothing wrong with exploring other stuff for fun but having a "duty" rifle that isn't a 556 DI AR-15? just not serious

AR-15 is in the position it is due to massive spend and iteration over 60 years. It's a good system

The XCR is better in the following areas:
Extreme environment reliability
Better ergos
Better flexibility without swapping parts (subs-supers-suppressor changes do not need a buffer or gas system change)
Better feed angle for STANAGs
Stronger bolt and captured firing pin (see also 416 et al)
Better cam path/wear pattern (steel on steel vs steel on aluminum, see also longer AR-15 cam paths)
Fixed ejector is 50/50 but its one less moving part/spring. Not a very common failure point with maintenance

Areas where the XCR could be better:
Simpler gas block
CHF barrels?
Weak side mag release fence
Better stock LOP adjustment design

It's been a while since I looked up the details, but I'm pretty sure it was only disqualified after not having a blank firing adapter because the USPS conveniently "lost" it in the mail after the XCR had been receiving glowing reviews from those who had already tested it. This isn't the proof you're looking for, but military procurement is sketchy and corrupt as a rule and some variant of this story has been consistently told across the last couple decades by more than just the maker of the rifle.

All a moot point anyway, seeing as the SCAR they adopted instead was more or less abandoned in favor of just sticking with the AR anyway because that's what SOCOM was already familiar with. The XCR would've probably suffered the same fate, even if it had won.

My thought is FN was already working with SOCOM, they requested the grenade launcher from FN ~8 months before the testing and the competition was a formality to pick the FN product. Things like the FN being one of the few rifles submitted with a recip charging handle, and the grenade launcher development implies to me communication outside the SCAR competition

The most recent NGSW program and the fuckery with the Sig 320 are other great examples of this.
