It looks like they intend to make up the hull deficit with unmanned platforms, similar to what every relevant Air Force is attempting with CCAs. While the way it’s being pitched is gaudy and awful, the concept itself is sound and this is probably a result of the Navy finally finding an officer that knows how to massage Trump’s ego to get what they want.

Didn't we have a thread where it was strongly suggested that the USN had successfully proven 32MJ tech, but wanted 64MJ, and cancelled the program because they couldn't make 64MJ work? And for those pointing out the unimpressive range of a 32MJ gun, if we're looking at CG(X)'s CONOPS, then the primary mission of the railgun and the 5"/62s is self-defense against air and surface threats at close ranges (probably WVR). We know that Mk 45s got a fair workout against Houthi drones just based on reported ammo consumption. And, that HVP design has been kicking around for over a decade now. I have to assume the Mk38s are also mostly for drone (air or surface) defense.5) I don't know how advanced the 300KW laser program is, but that's enough to disable at least a small salvo of subsonic ASCMs. We're still arguing over whether it'd kill HGVs prior to impact.Bottom line: Forget Trump. I don't have much faith in the USN.
