What advantage do Chariots offer over mounted horsemen?

The horses don't need to be big enough to carry a man and his gear.

>>64667779Not really. Everyone ditched chariots long before the stirrup shows up archeologically. Some theorize it existed and we just haven't found them (perhaps made of leather which rotted away), but it's not in literary or art sources either. Whereas as soon as they show up, they're in art and literature as it's hard not to talk about them when discussing mounted combat.The "small horse" angle might be correct, although I doubt it. New evidence from skeletons shows Indo-Europeans were riding horses enough to have skeletal deformities associated with frequent horseback riding, long before the introduction of war chariots. (though, carts/wagons were in use). My personal take is that chariot combat was not particularly different from horseback combat in the ancient world. Roman sources describe Germanic cavalry as being directly accompanied by and assisted by infantry; for every horseman, there would be an infantryman working as a team, tagging alongside them, and if necessary they'd hop on with the rider and escape. Even after the invention and popularization of stirrups in Europe, knights from many nations would often choose to fight on foot, using the horse more for transport than combat.
