There is no waiting for permission or anything like that. I just send an email to my local ATF agent that says "this is anon, I will be in (state) from (startt date) and plan to return (end date). I am taking the following items with me: (list of nfa toys here)". Sometimes she replies and says thanks, sometimes not. ATF really doesn't care about NFA items past the initial stamp unless you're using them in crimes. They don't have the manpower or money to keep constant tabs on people unless they suspect some other criminal activity. They are too busy auditing FFLs and processing registrarions. ATF agents are mostly just accountants with guns.
