Do wooden logs work as armor or is it cope?
>>64675531Yes, it works. If you get lucky it might catch an RPG like slat armor and if you don't get lucky you were fucked anyway.
If it gives even just 10 percent more piece of mind, I'd say it's worth it
>>64675531It's probably not worth much against anything that might be sent a tank's way but you also might get lucky and if it makes the guys inside feel better then Sun Tzu would call that an advantage.
>>64675531It's probably more effective as camouflage than armor and could have been further enhanced as both if branches were left on the logs.
>>64675531>disclaimer: I am not remotely an expert and am merely some random retard on the internet making baseless speculationWith that out the way, I presume it's at least slightly better protection than without. I'd be surprised if it helped much against more advanced munitions, but against simpler/cheaper munitions it's surely at least a minor improvement if you don't mind the extra weight.
>>64675535You might as well be taping car tires on the sides and hoping it bounces off of them, that'd be just as likely.
>>64675531On a physical level it does nothing. Anything that would be stopped by the logs wouldn't have penetrated the armor anyway. On a psychological level it makes the crew feel better about their situation, which is actually a big advantage as long as no one tells them that the logs do nothing.
>>64675531It works against home made RPGs in backyard workshops like those used by Moro Muslims in Mindanao. That's why Philippine military puts logs on their vehicles. But the Cambodian army doesn't use home made RPGs. They have standard RPG warheads from factories. If it is working for the Thai, that means Vietnamese factory made RPGs are shit (which is where Cambodia got its RPGs from).
>>6467553180% security blanket, 20% blind luck.
>>64675531Why wouldn't it work?

>>64675531>>64675531That's an M113 which has aluminum armor that was only designed to protect against 7.62 mm and shell splinter so it actually help to some degrees. And like this anon >>64675535 said, it might catch an RPG like slat armor if you are lucky, which actually happened here >>64677112 >>64677114
>>64675531Doubt it. Maybe prevents bullets from ricocheting, but that's about it.
>>64675799Don't start giving them ideas
You either understand how shaped charges work, or you don't. A lot of you don't.
>>64677112>>64677114My anus just puckered. That's crazy.>OK everybody out!
It is unlikely to be effective in terms of HEAT protection in a slight standoff, but it is likely to be effective against spalling of the backside of the armor caused by a direct hit from a HE shell.
Could probably damage the tips of AP rounds, no?
>>64677112I think you should be allowed to go home now, because you should be technically dead!
>>64675531Only if it's meant to provide a bit of protection against small arms and fragmentation. Though at that point, you have to start asking why these things even get close enough to take fire.
Would they provide sufficient protection against HEDP fired from these? Shorter penetrating jet compared to an RPG.
>>64680304Probably better than taking it on the hull, the 35mm HEDP wasn't a hugely dangerous round, very good for taking out up-armoured light utility vehicles and trucks but probably not likely to bother something like an APC or IFV overly much. I think it was maybe good for about 80-100mm of armour penetration so if its got to go through LOG™ it'll take a bit of sting out of it as well
>>64675531I guess it's called eucalyptus armor
>>64675531Stacked cardboard also works just as good. The trashbags help to keep them waterproof.
>>64675531It takes 21 inches of pine to stop a .50 BMGhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z32eCOiyG3QIt will go through 3 sandbagshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-EPKta_w7k>>64680529>>64680532100 layers of cardboard doesn't stop .50 Action Express.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqC8m7KvPkIit might help some against an IED, taking some of the blast through deformation. If your mission doesn't require mobility, anything added is probably better than nothing. Since you can't remanufacture the IFV to add armor, the fact that it's terrible compared to adding the same weight in real armor doesn't mean anything. If I was going to be in a M113 raked by .50 BMG fire I'd most certainly rather it be covered in logs than nothing at all.
>>64679731Is spalling even a thing anymore? I mean with chobham like armor.
>>64678039This sort of stuff doesn't work on FPV drones since they have different fuze designs.
