Even on paper it shouldn't have been the fourth strongest. There was the US and USSR, followed probably by China and then Iraq and Iran, who had been building up throughout the 80s to kill each other. Within Europe, the larger NATO armies (Britain, France, West Germany) were larger and better armed than Yugoslavia's.

Just adding that this claim is popular among former ex-yugoslavs and yugonostalgics but its usually cited as "4th largest in Europe" not the world.

It was the largest non-aligned force in Europe though.

and no. Well, maybe yes, depending how you look at it. It leaned heavily into partisan roots and it's plan for fighting adversaries was literally to cede ground and go innawoods. There is still a bunch of weapons and ammo caches stored throughout former YU
