What's the deal with the ISV? Does it make any sense? Is it retarded?
Like I know air-transportability is important for the US military but surely something with at least a basic amount of armor could have worked
and also what does it do that ye olde Humvee (in the open cargo-bed variant) doesn't?
>it's cheap and light >army still has a lot of armored vehicles >marine corp keeping the JLTV line open >army can wait 4 years
>>64681140airdroppable light off-road troop carrier, apparently
>>64681149> cheap and light it's light, but the supposed cheapness doesn't seem to be adding uphttps://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a67960266/soldiers-exposed-new-army-trucks/> M1301 contracts average well over $330,000 to $370,000 per vehicle delivered. By comparison, recent contracts show costs of $225,000 to $275,000 per Humvee, and $330,000–$400,000 per JLTV.And again, wouldn't a Humvee like >>64681146 work just fine, without needing a whole new production line to be spun up?> army can wait 4 yearswait for what? Is there some other procurement thing going on? Genuinely asking, the only thing I know about is the XM30, which I guess might have finally gotten somewhere by then
>>64681141Can you stuff two of those inside a chinook?
>>64681140Its for situations where the alternative is walking. You saw in that hungarian bog what happens when armor meets unforgiving terrain. If they'd added any armor, its also unlikely you could sling load it under a blackhawk and still carry its occupants in the same bird, which is one of its big selling points. The margins are pretty tight as it is, 2 tons for the vehicle only leave less than two for 9 guys and all their shit, which doesn't account for any additional weapons or sensor systems on ISV or helicopter that could tip the scales further.
>>64681178>It’s going to require a lot less diesel fuel, leaders said Wednesday at the AUSA Global Force Symposium here. The infantry squad vehicle, one of the stars of the Transformation in Contact effort, sips fuel compared to the Humvee, its “college-kid-on-Spring-Break” predecessor, according to the 25th Infantry Division’s sustainment brigade commander.>“To give you kind of a touch point in that, our Alpha Company only had to push into 2,700 gallons of gas through the entire duration of that formation, in that fight, because of a low consumption rate with the ISV,” said Col. Chris Johnson.>That was compared to 45,000 gallons burned by 1980s-era Humvees the year before, Johnson said.>“You're like, well, what's the big deal in having to push less gas?” he said. “Well, we look at our fight through a lens of fighting in the Pacific. We look at it through a lens of fighting, maybe, places like the Philippines, some other islands that, you know, we won't mention here.”Army's words.
>>64681141Absolutely wild to me how much was spent on mraps instead of these.
I ,am forgotten..
>>64681140It can be sling loaded by Blackhawk and can carry the entire 9 man chalk that's also being lifted inside. The alternative is walking.
>>64681220Holy fucking SOOOOVVVLLLLLUnironically like holy fucking SOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVLLLLWe need more fucking SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVLLLWhy is everything so boring ugly and SOVLLESS now I'm actually being 100% serious this looks so fucking good bros what the fuck
>>64681193So instead of just putting a modern fuel efficient engine into the Humvee they bought a whole new vehicle?
>>64681263Now with lasers!
>>64681263Is a windshield also too heavy? Driver better bring some goggles.
>>64681264to get what they wanted out of an existing humvee chassis would require far more than just new engine, at the very least a complete new cab and probably a new lightened chassis. i realize youre fixated on the cost, but trying to make a humvee have the same features would have been throwing good money after bad. remember, a stock flatbed m998 is two and a half tons and they just get heavier from there, theres too much intrinsic weight that would need to be shaved off even the lightest humvee for it to be worthwhile.
>>64681140>>64681189>>64681193>>64681222The ISV is basically the army asking itself "how do we keep airmobile infantry relevant in an era of modern long range networked air defenses?". They tried stealthy VTOL transports but apparently those are a nightmare judging by the number of proposals that failed to go anywhere over the years (the ones they used for the OBL raid were a product of one of those failed programs). With an ISV you can fly in as close as you can get to the enemy AA without getting shot at, then unload and drive in a fair distance and have fresh troops ready to fight. This allows you to strike at targets far in the enemy's rear without getting completely shredded by enemy AA.The possibilities become even more juicy when you consider that the army is procuring the MV-75 (formerly V-280 Valor) which has roughly 2x the range and speed of a Blackhawk. If you do some light SEAD/DEAD beforehand, you can punch a nice little gap in enemy air defenses and go even deeper behind the frontline.Even if you never have the balls to actually use this capability, your enemy has to respect that you *could* do it, thus complicating the fuck out of their defensive situation as the number of places you could drop a division multiplies.
>>64681302>Even if you never have the balls to actually use this capability, your enemy has to respect that you *could* do it, thus complicating the fuck out of their defensive situation as the number of places you could drop a division multiplies.Way to complicated for some. War is now driving into enemy lines while all combat takes place in that 10km stretch. You know, because russians are doing it that way.
>>64681146>>64681178Not be shitHave you ever actually gotten inside a humvee? You need body armor just to survive a fucking bumpy road. Awful seating and ergonomics throughout.
>>64681140Its beyond based. Firepower + mobility > Firepower + protection since nothing can fully protect you.
>>64681149>cheap>2 million each plus tip
>>64681354Dollar is worth dick in 2025
>>64681354$150,000
>>64681460It was like $370,000 in average for the total production run between 2020 and 2024. if you're gonna limit to a single year because the figure is lower then the result is retarded because you're not including the whole contract that was like +$200 for a few hundred vehicles (and the investment to produce them)
>>64681352>>64681354>>64681362>>64681538>literally just a large pickup>$370kAmericans are funny
>>64681538wasn't the whole argument behind this "it's just a Chevrolet Colorado, it's basically all off-the-shelf parts!", how did it even end up costing so much?what R&D even was involved in this, did they have to pay some Chevy engineer hundreds of millions of dollars to slice off the doors and roof?
>>64681552Military equipment is built to a higher standard.
>>64681574Hahahaha you people never fail to make me laugh
>>64681567When $370k is considered a bargain you'd be stupid to charge any less :)
>>64681574>Military equipment is built to a standard.FTFY.That sometimes it happens to be better than the common equivalent is more of a happy circumstance than by actual design.
> hey chevy, gimme a pickup truck with extra seats> extra seats!> and hold the roof!> hold the roof?> and hold up the doors!> hold the doors?!> hey jimmy, gimme a seats with nothin'!
