Why did US GI's love to smoke cigarettes so much?
>>
because cigarettes were part of military rations up until 1975.
>>
To help them cope
>>
>>64684593
Anon they never stopped
>>
They got given them for free. Idk if its the same in the military, but in my first job after high school we had guys who took up smoking just so they could take smoke breaks, as non smokers didn't get them and had to keep working.
>>

Literally everyone smoked cigs up until very recently. Only in the very, very recent years have militaries across the world started working towards banning nicotine products.
>>

Not even in the military, according to my old man it was a rarity to find people that didn't smoke back then. Everything smelled like cigarettes and lawnmower exhaust

This stuff is really interesting. Jungle combat in Vietnam was something else. I read a memoir by a US grunt where they were out hunting a NVA unit over a mountain pass. He said he could smell the fish they ate from smelling his hands after climbing the rocks. LRRP's would start eating indigenous food for similar reasons.

This
Watching movies from like the 80s and earlier is fucking bizarre when someone starts smoking indoors, like good god imagine the stench
>>
You need a smoke after smashing that much viet poon.
>>
It keeps you awake and alert, suppresses hunger, looks cool, feels good. War is also more hazardous to your health than smoking, so you might as well.
>>

Same here. American spirits got me a 10 min break
>>
>>64684623
It was like this when I was enlisted back in the late 2000s
>Standing around
>bad
>standing around smoking a cigarette
>acceptable
19 year olds pick up the habit quick

Correct answers. In addition, nicotine has a calming effect, which is valuable in a stressful combat environment
>>
Smoking in the field was discouraged, but low-quality troops aren't going to allow common sense and regulations to keep them from indulging in their drug habit.
It's not just smokers but nicotine freaks in general. Put it ib yourmiuth and sput everywhere. Tap the can over and over like a retard when you're supposed to be quiet. Ditto for talking and laughing for nothing because you're on your little trip.
>>

yeah and it gave directors an excuse to make every indoor scene smokey
>>
>>64684832
>like good god imagine the stench
May be because I grew up with it, the only thing that was bad were the super obnoxious ciggs the nigger smoked.
Otherwise, I very fondly remember the pipes and cigars my relatives smoked.
The smell of wood smoke, coffee and "Borkum Riff" pipe tobacco.

I feel like this is the Vietnamese equivalent of the fuddlore of "garand pings alert Germans you're out of ammo."
I mean people can say whatthefuckever in an interview.
>>
>>64684593
Because smoking is good for you

If you are tracking 40 chain smokers in the jungle, you will run into a cigarrette butt ever 10th meter. And smokers have no idea how much they smell to a non smoker.
>>
>>64685600
Well obviously, we'd be sick if they could smell ourselves
>>
>>64685600
Yeah, but as >>64685233
Said. Ive been to Vietnam, and those gooks smoke more than 2 stroke
>>
>>64684923
Not just calming, it is a proven nootropic. The detriment comes from conventional methods of ingesting it. Pastuerized Swedish snus or nicotine salt patches have negligible cancer effect.
>>
>>64684593
There was this crazy guy who coached throwing at my highschool who claimed to have been in Vietnam that said hairspray had a smell the gooks could track.
