I want to get a musket. Ideally I’d like an authentic one used in the Civil War, but most of the ones I’ve found are either too expensive, or in pretty rough shape.Should I get a real one or buy a reproduction? What do you guys think?
>>64692656If you are not stupid rich or you want to shoot it at any point you should get a reproduction. Originals are all museum pieces at this point, not something you'd want to shoot but only collect and display.
>>64692656A good reproduction will cost you as much as an original, you should be able to find a springfield or an efield for reasonable money that is fit to shootAll good reproduction muskets are made by pedersolli and your tariffs mean you can't afford them anymore, neither do reproductions have the progressive depth rifling of some muskets like the enfield 53, even the best ones.>>64692733Nonsense I shoot an enfield 53 made by RT Pritchet with his name on the lockplate and an original kerr 1862 made by the London Arms company. Suprised to see a normally good poster like you say something so silly.Reproductions are fine but you will sepend just as much getting a decent one. DO NOT buy some piece of shit made in India, there is no proofing done on them and if you get a bad one you will loose your face and hands. If you have to get one get a pedersolli
>>64694464>enfield 53 made by RT Pritchethttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Taylor_Pritchett>>64692733I love the fact I have one with the actual RT Prichett made and signed lockplate. OP should run it poast a gunsmith sure but the4re is no harm in shooting them whatsoever, it will need a new nipple anyway. I use buffalo arms platinum lined ones on my kerr. Mind you I don't shoot the enfield 53 a lot any more I worked it up to wimledon shoot standard and moved on. Have an original bayoney and scabbard for it too but a reproduction sling
>>64692733I guess I can do these things easier and cheaper in Europe because the EU is a lot better for guns than the USA, espcially percussion and flintlocks. I;d be more concerned on a flintlock because of frizzen wear but I have made original brown besses go bang a few times as well as other 19th century guns
>>64692733Out of a grudging respect for you I'll do a photo in a bit. Old percussion muskets can't be that rare in the US, you were flooded with them by 1865 and imported a shit ton more via bannermans
>>64692656Reproduction. You don't want to really be firing antiques since they have a habit of exploding. They belong in a museum for a reason.
>>64692656TLDR whether real or repro save up and spend and get yourself a good one, you will be into 1000+ either way and more like 1500 with bayonet and mould and shipping etc. If you get an original make sure a decent gunsmith checks the breechplug and barrel walls for you and that you have a sound half cock and nipple
>>64694487You're all full of shit really, stick to what you know about because you sure don't know about shooting old percussion arms.
