Is it possible to change the muzzle blast color?Any reloaders here tried adding stuff like picrel to do so?
>>64698900You ought to be able to add the same kinds of chemicals used to color fireworks to color the muzzle blast. I.e. strontium salts for red, copper for green, and so on. But a lot of those chemicals are highly corrosive so I wouldn't want them anywhere near my gun for something as silly as >durr my muzzle flash is redMight be fun to play around with some old beater just to see what happens.
If a flame color reaction could be generated using a muzzle-mounted device, it might be possible to color the flame while protecting the barrel.
>>64698969>noooo lead is dangerous you have to wear mask and gloves when you shoot>mfw hand loading Strontium-90 into my rounds
>>64699027strontium has stable isotopes
>>64699104Mine does too, but after about 28 years
Well, who here reloads?Buy one of those magic fire packs from Walmart for $2, and add a little to your charge. Shoot it at dusk and report back
>>64699182Shit. I have some and a shitty gun I don't care about. I don't have an reload gear, but I think I can try this by hand with some 22lr. I'll report this tomorrow night if I'm not too hung over.
>>6469918522LR probably won't work worth a shit. It has very fast powder that will burn completely out in a a short barrel so even if the flash was colored you'd never see it because it would be hidden within the barrel. You need to do this with a powder and barrel length combination that results in a lot of unburnt powder. Something like a .45-70 out of a revolver would be ideal.
>>64699198I have a 16" revolver, TX22, and a 22" rifle.I can also try it with my mosin, but that will alert the neighbors
>>64698900My sole concern is that it would alter (perhaps considerably) the behavior of the propellant. Also, randomly adding even inert materials to the propellant charge will cause significant changes in chamber pressure.-So-With that bullshit out of the way, if you took into account the potential added mass and adjusted accordingly, it might be interesting. I'm wondering though how much of the material you'd need to add to reliably produce the desired effect though. -Corrosion-Probably no worse than black powder. Boiling hot water is the solution to pollution.>>64699198I have a chrome lined barrel in one of my 1911's. And a few pounds of FFFg black powder for extra smoky goodness (and because many modern propellants use flash suppressants). I might try this.
>>64699330>you'd need to add to reliably produce the desired effect though.Very little. I did a science fair project about those chemicals which color flames back in grade school. A tiny speck of the relevant chemical stuck on a wire and inserted into the flame of a bunsen burner or propane torch would color the whole flame for a couple seconds. A couple grains (weight) ought to be plenty.A handgun length barrel would be ideal for experimenting with this, pick a load that has some unburnt powder.>smokemaking colored *smoke* is a totally different thing than coloring the *flame*. smoke bomb contents might work if you wanted to color smoke?
what if you packed one of these blast redirectors with the stuff and shot a fireball round out of a short barrel? probably minimal damage to the barrel.
