Last week the RDK commander was announced to have been killed in a drone strike. Russians celebrated and everyone else lamented. RDK vowed revenge.

Now it's revealed he's alive, Ukraine carried out a fake attack and collected the 500,000 dollar bounty for killing him. The money is going directly into procuring more arms and munitions to attack Russia of course.

Straight up when I heard about it I was like "fuck". I shook my head, pretend I didn't hear that, and focused on "good news". This in turn is a crazy insane turn of events.

All of the Ukrainian "old blood" in the intelligence services have retired, or ran off to Russia after 2014, so there is a lot of new blood in the system including Budanov. They seem to be a lot more creative and energetic, as well as completely committed to the Ukrainian state.

Strangely, the 2014 invasion of the east and Crimea allowed for a "release valve" of those who doubted Ukraine and sided with Russia to jump ship, leaving only dedicated men behind. If Russia had just gone all in during 2014 they would have taken Kiev and achieved their aims. Crazy how things work out eh?

Unlike other similar units like the Freedom of Russia Legion and whatever, RDK can trace it's origins to before the war, when monke did one of the smarter things he could and cracked down on ultranationalists (which led to people like Kapustin fleeing to Ukraine), and is probably the closest thing to an actual Russian Liberation Army we're going to get.

That's a benefit, not a liability. Most of the old Soviet guys retired or they fucked off to Russia after 2014. The new GUR is new blood and strong nationalists.

As I've thought, the 2014 crisis was ultimately a boon to Ukraine's government and military since anyone who wasn't on board with Ukraine just defected to Russia leaving only the supporters of the country behind. This meant that almost no one turned out to be a turncoat during the 2022 invasion.

Highly intelligent and motivated individual, in a meritocratic, result-driven system
But still, his rise is pretty incredible, he's the head of Ukrainian military intelligence and he's not even 40 yet (or, well, will be in like two days).
Reading his Wikipedia page, he graduated from the military academy, commissioned as an officer, immediately passed selection into what's essentially Ukraine's equivalent of CIA ground branch, and apparently kept getting promoted at a crazy rate because he kept delivering results (Lt.Col in 7-8 years, Lt.Gen in ~16 years)
I really fucking hope he releases an autobiography at some point, maybe after the war ends, because that will be one crazy read
>>
>>64705814
>Then how comes the ziggers rolled over the defence lines from Crimea to Kherson in February 2022?

1. Kherson is the exception to the rule - as the city's leadership opened and welcomed the Russians. None of the bridges were blown out and the river is a perfect defense point.
2. Blame Zelenskyy who had his head in the sand. The Americans were telling him the Russians were gonna invade, but he didn't believe it and didn't prepare defenses as much as he should have.

Yeah no, the whole reason Russian managed to attack into Kherson in 2022 was because of turncoats in the Ukrainian army who didn't place the mines at the border and did not blow up the Kherson Bridge.

Pretty much nobody expected the Russians to actually do it and Ukrainians were ofcourse afraid of doing any sort of major mobilization because Putin would have used that as a pretext to attack. Ofcourse we know in hindsight what happened, the issue is that someone are somehow STILL believing Russia and their constant lies.
>>
>>64705998
To a degree. Why Zelensky didn't have 50 good men stationed in Kherson ready to blow the bridges is beyond me. Doing so would have sparred them all the fighting around Kherson city in 2022 and rather just hide behind the Dnieper, allowing them to have done more for the Kharkov offensive.

I know where you're coming from, I remember the UK MoD made a post about the needed pivot towards Russia at maybe the start of the decade (around then anyway) and figured that was unnecessary. Their late 21/early 22 actions were pretty unprecedented though because they weren't making any sort of casus belli, they were coming out with claims that would ruin their reputation if they were unfounded, and predicted a war most thought untenable regardless if they were right, so basically 0 gain when they could (and were) telling Ukraine privately anyway
Blowing it into the public sphere was an act of desperation I do believe because ukraine was hesitant to act, they were staking their entire reputation on it

You gotta remember that this was right after Covid. The public were already pretty sceptical on anything coming from any government institution, but everyone should have realized something was happening when the Russian propagandists started shouting and they started stocking blood during a "training exercise".

Many also legitimately didn't expect Ukraine to survive, both because they overestimated the Russians and underestimated the Ukrainians, probably because we never really have seen Russia launch such a large scale operation since WW2 and we still believed their propaganda (which the Russians also did lmao).

That isn't true, the Ukrainians did believe US intelligence but the publicly denied it because they didn't want citizens to panic. They were moving units and logistics around so it was important that the roads weren't packed and unusable. There's also little they could've done better imo, it's not like they could've set up a frontline near the border. Better to let the Russians stretch out their logistics and hit them with ambushes and pre sighted artillery.
>>
>>64706188
I don't think they bought into it until the final months, which is when FVEY started going hugely public with their claims
They were largely on board with the FR/GER position that the buildup wasn't really indicative of impending invasion given all the prior buildups, I'm not saying FR/GER/Ukraine didn't think an invasion was going to happen, but iirc none of them really predicted the start of 22, and as stated Zelenskys original position was attempting peace. A lot of the motions happened in Feb itself and a lot of it was movement to avoid the russian first strike
Although to be fair it's not like you want to start those movements till as late as logistically possible anyway as to avoid a Russian reevaluation of Ukranian positions so I'll concede that

I can think of a few alteast:
1. Blow up the Kherson Bridge or have better plans for blowing it up
2. Rotate Soviet-era officers who most likely arn't loyal
3. Background checks and vetting of said officers
4. More mines
5. Better control and structure for influx of foreign volunteers/aid
6. Better narrative control of the conflict (Russia still dominates this and Ukraine still are struggling with this)

But those things are minor. The ones to blame is the US and the West. We should have been flooding Ukraine with Javelins and Stingers 1-2 months before the war and then we should have been flooding it with HIMARS, Abrahms, F-16's Bradley's, CV-90's and Leo 2's the day Russia retreated from Northern Ukraine. The war would have been over in 2022 if it wasn't for our overly cautious approach.

It also took out most of the punch any anti-putin protests could have had. Most russian ultras of Kapustin's type aren't pro-monke (for completely different reasons someone like Maxim Katz is, you'll notice most pro-russian ultras tend to be absolute degenerates instead of just regular chuds, see Milchakov) but they wouldn't have issue giving a hand to any mass liberal protest if it turned violent. >There was a hell of a lot of ambushes on armored columns and helo shootdowns I the first few months

Given what they had and where they were, the Ukrainians fought admirably and punched way over their weight. I think most of us were very surprised that 3-5 days had gone and Ukraine was still standing only then to start seeing the footage. I remember looking at webcam footage on the first days, seeing soldiers in Odessa and wondering if they were Russian or not, which in retrospective sounds very silly but we had been fed propaganda for years that Russia was an equal to the whole of NATO.

It does annoy me a bit of "what could have been" when you have hindsight. If they just had prepared a bit more and had more weapons. Take webm rel. If they just had twice or triple the MANPADS on invasion day, Hostomel would have turned out EVEN WORSE which is something I can't believe I'm saying. The Russians wouldn't even have set foot on the airport.
