were important because every naval maneuver was planned with the consideration "what if a battleship shows up?".

there werent many grand battleship engagements but that was on purpose because every side planned around them, an in effect battleships shaped every naval action

Well yeah
And they remained relevant until about 1960 when the A-6 Intruder and Blackburn Buccaneer finally made carriers not completely helpless at night / fog

Nice pic; uncommon to see a Nelrod's AA fit up close
>>
cope, all they were good for was lethargic shore bombardment and friendly fire on US marine positions.

The only real counter to another battleship that was at sea was another battleship if the USS Johnston wasn't available.

hindsight is 20 20, but at the time they were a fear in the back of everyone's mind

now that youre grown up youre not afraid of the dark but when you were a kid you were scared to take out the trash after 7pm

>being an AA gunner on top of the main battery when it does a full broadside
What does your ears look after that?

They were important because they already existed and so naturally they were used where possible. Few were built and commissioned during the war itself, and those were ships already laid and and/or paid for. Numerous countries canceled planned ships.

I don't think Germany's biggest problem was some carrier raids.
Tirpitz tied up a few allied battleships that otherwise weren't going to be doing much anyway. She then took herself out of the war by putting so many defenses around that she wasn't going to sortie anyway.

It's actually crazy that the Kriegsmarine even tried anything with battleships. The Imperial Germany Navy failed to win with a massive fleet, what the hell did Raeder think he would achieve with a *maximum* of four?

She deserved to retire to a museum. If ever there was proof of the machine spirit it was her.

Which, in its most successful outing, took months to bring down 22 ships. The voyages themselves were impressive for the ships & crews involved, but in the larger scheme of things it meant little. A few episodes of Britain putting large warships on alert and going on the hunt, and the Germans escaping back to port, except for the times they didn't.
The heart of the problem goes back to the German prewar delusions of: Plan-Z fleet buildup would be a thing, and they could keep Britain out of the war (or even have them as allies) and only worry about countering France.

Most shore bombard was conducted by destroyers

Yeah. And when Oldendorf crossed the T with his battleships at the Surigao Strait, I'm sure he was concerned about how obsolete his flotilla was whilst putting the last Jap naval threat on the bottom.
