So I'm wondering what is kill radios of FAB-500 in situation where bomb is on the ground (no loss in energy due to it being dig in into dirt) and the person is standing up. I found this website: https://unsaferguard.org/un-saferguard/blast-damage-estimationbut i don't find it plausible that kill radius is just 15m.Also how would kill radius change is bomb was on ground and person was lying in 2m deep trench?

>>64716976That little thing is for killing ants at best
I dunno they seem pretty anemic for the size.
>>64716976The blast itself loses energy at a cubic rate, it's the fragmentation that kills with large bombs like this. Humans are relatively resistant to blast effects which is why you need something to amplify it like an enclosed space. This is also why largely pure HE grenades are considered "offensive" grenades, because you can throw them farther than the blast will injure you relatively easily.
>>64716976You only want to look at blast? Because the fragments would be by far the most lethal effect of a bomb. And if you were hiding behind something that could shield you from the debris then it would probably mitigate the blast too.

>>64717011I was surprised when Iskander hit building that maybe 2 or 3 floors were damaged. Keep in mind that building in the picture is made from pre-fab pieces, not solid concrete. If it was damage would be lighter.>>64717019Thanks. I know that. I'm looking for hard numbers.>>64717003Isn't it most common bomb used by RAF?
>>64717030I'm mostly trying to learn what what happen if bomb were to go off near trench or in trench.
>>64717044>I'm looking for hard numbers.this is the chart >>64716990 and all book you need to read then
>>64717044It's a joke referring to your use of an extremely small picture of a bomb. Hence its a bomb for killing ants. Because its so small. Get it?
>>64717053>I'm mostly trying to learn what what happen if bomb were to go off near trench or in trench. From the same book.
>>64717073This is problematic and anti-manlet speech.
Chart use.Blast kill range, 50% lethality for TNT loaded 1000 lbs GP (~50% charge weight) bomb is 25 feet.
>>64717091
>>64717078>>64717063I just find it hard to believe that standing aprox 60 ft from 1000lb bomb will result just in burst ear drums...
>>64717044The FAB-500 is ~210kg of TGAF, which is pretty close to 50/50 RDX/TNT. You can't really directly convert TNT equivalent to blast effect but the ballpark of 15m seems correct to me. That calculator gives a radius of 25m for "lung damage" which is mostly fatal without prompt medical attention. The Japanese Type 98 320mm spigot mortar used on Iwo Jima was a pretty close analogue, it fired a ~650 lb shell that was pretty much a thin cylinder packed full of HE, and it was explicitly known for causing very few casualties among US attackers for the entire battle despite being used pretty extensively.
>>64717095see >>64717096Also wtf, 25 feet and only 50% of men die???
>>64716976That's the kill radius for just the HE. The shrapnel will hit more like a 100m radius reliably, and you still want cover out to 300m. HE can be funny. It's more reliable but it wounds differently. You may be stunned, eardrums blown out, brain ruined or have your internal organs wrecked but still be able to walk around for ten minutes. You should now sense why shrapnel was such a big deal pre-smart-bomb, as well as the dynamics for why 500-1000lb bombs are so deadly post smart bomb. The precision for GPS is under 5m, or about 20m if it's jammed; so a reasonably large (bigger than himars or hellfire) bomb like a 500lb JDAM with smart guidance can put the target in the ground impact version of a no escape zone every time, despite walls, trenches, or jamming.
>>64717102Thats LD50 which is usually seen as enough to call something deadly. Don't think you should assume the other 50% are all fine and dandy, they are just not dead outright.
>>64717115I understand all that.So if you have infantry in well built trench you need basically hit them within few meters when you account that bomb will "dig" into the ground and geometry of trench will disrupt the shock wave?>>64717117I mean sure that 50ft away and just burst eardrums????
>>64717096Such is life desu.Blast effects are generally extremely exaggerated. Fragments is what actually killsAnother bit of data US Examination of 1,000 American CasualtiesKilled in Italy 1944. Out of 1000 KIA only 13 could be attributed to blast effect only. Other casualties may have blast effects but they died from fragments and bullets anyway.Generally if bomb/shell land close enough for blast to kill target woudl be completely shredded by fragments. Blast can only kill if target was shielded from fragments but not blast (like round lands near trench). Only blast kill radius is so small such hits rarely happen. See 1.3% of studied KIA.
>>64717101>You can't really directly convert TNT equivalent to blast effectBombs loadings blast conversion chart.
>>64716976It is for blasts kill with pressure waves above like certain number of psi that collapse ones lung and other squishy parts. Waves also wraps around corners(diffraction) and gets reflected into holes so one is not entirely safe even out of line of sight in such range.
>>64717011Soviet commie blocks are strong.Concrete solid structures. It is why they still stand with poor maintenance all these years later.Stick frame american apartments would have half the building blown away.Soviets built cold sterile buildings strong, like orc. And don't seem to suffer the corruption of chinese buildings of similar design but fradulent materials that fall apart much sooner.
>>64717274That is party wrong. Shock wave loses lots of energy when wrapping a corner.
>>64717102>25 feet and only 50% of men die?50% of a man
>>64717735Just saw that same episode two months ago. I assume first measurement of blast in green trench is faulty? Does this also show trench "focuses" blast and makes it "stronger"?
>>64717073>having to explain that referencegrim
Can anyone also provide blast damage for 2000lbs mk84 and other similar CAS/artillery rounds?Like the himars one they used to kill some soviet Colonel or whatever the grade was
>>64720164same book recommended by first poster
>>64717044>Isn't it most common bomb used by RAF?We only use Paveway in various forms now, all the others are stand-off weapons
>>64717304>Soviet commie blocks are strong.>Concrete solid structures. Are you retarded? They are not strong and they are not solid concrete. It's even clear in the image.
