Great choice.

Alternative for Fantasy, gotta be Excalibur. How long has that sword been a legend? Almost a thousand years?

IRL, gotta be Hotarumaru. Odachi that was mythologized as being used in battle, and damaged heavily from use. When the user awoke from a dream of fireflies gathering on the blade, he awoke to the sword fully repaired. Unfortunately, the real sword was robbed during WW2, and has been remade and a replica on display since 2015.

I like that for most of it's existence, Dragon Slayer was an entirely mundane sword who's strengths were the result of normal blade smithing practices taken to their extreme. I also quite like how it become enchanted, i.e.; through constant usage against a specific foe for an extended period of time.
I feel that the story of that sword also has a lot of thematic and narrative parallels to Guts' own life story, which is something I think all legendary blades in Fantasy should do to some degree.
>>
>>64719294
The size is wildly inconsistent, and not just in action shots. Attempting to "scale" it and say how much it weighs is pointless when it's either six or eight feet long and either one or four inches thick.
I love berserk more than anything but that's just one of those things you have to accept, and "wishing" it was one size and one weight wont make it so.
>>
>>64719317
It was still made of metal from a magical source, and Godot's other swords still did supernatural things like not chipping or bending when Guts hacked off the horn of an anvil with one.

Glamdring or Excaliber

Gáe Bulg

The Gáe Bulg had to be made ready for use on a stream and cast from the fork of the toes. It entered a man's body with a single wound, like a javelin, then opened into thirty barbs. Only by cutting away the flesh could it be taken from that man's body

"n other versions of the legend, the spear had seven heads, each with seven barbs. In the Táin Bó Cuailnge, Cú Chulainn received the spear after training with the great warrior mistress Scáthach in Alba. She taught him and his foster-brother, Ferdiad, everything the same, except she taught the Gáe Bulg feat only to Cuchulainn. He later used it in single combat against Ferdiad. They were fighting in a ford, and Ferdiad had the upper hand; Cúchulainn's charioteer, Láeg, floated the Gáe Bulg down the stream to his master, who cast it into Ferdiad's body, piercing the warrior's armor and "coursing through the highways and byways of his body so that every single joint filled with barbs." "

I do agree with all of you. The only problem is that there is no single iconic representation of Excalibur. All the others mentioned in this thread either come from visual media (manga, video games, movies, etc.) or have had an iconic adaptation (it is, in the collective imagination, impossible to represent Anduril differently than how it is presented in Peter Jackson's adaptations of The Lord of the Rings).

There have been many representations of Excalibur over the years, but none has taken precedence over another. So naturally, even though it is undoubtedly the most iconic sword in history, it is a little more difficult to mention it on an imageboard between visualy stricking swords like Cloud's Buster Sword, Conan's Atlantean Sword, and Ichigo's Zangetsu.

Fuck Harmony of Despair. I wasted so much time on that shit game.

I miss SOTN on the PSOne. I gamesharked my stats to 9999. I was getting drops with every enemy. Didn't need them, because I 99'ed every item in the game (including the Sword Familiar and one off items like Power of Sire).

You have listed a bunch of weapons from side books that 99% of readers never heard of. I guess that doesn't actually discount them, but also I would argue part of being "cool" is being "popular" and "easily recognizable".

I am 100% certain that there are cooler blades in fiction that Anduril or Excalibur. Hell, I think the various Moonlight Greatswords are cooler than both. But more popular and more recognizable? Maybe He-Man's Power Sword? I dont think in the last 50 years, any sword is more easily known by a larger amount of people than Anduril, Excalibur, or the Power Sword.

Both of them are based on the sword Gram from the ancient Germanic Völsunga saga, which supposedly described events transpiring in Scandinavia some 1,800 years ago.
Relevant events include a mysterious disguised wizard (implied to be Odin) who drives a fancy magical sword hilt-deep into an oak tree and recites a prophecy about whoever being honorable and strong enough to draw the sword from the oak tree being destined to crush his evil enemies and become a king.

Our hero Prince Sigmund pulls the sword from the tree, causing envy and rivalries that spiral out of control.
Lots of weird shit then happens (including Sigmund unwittingly fathering a child with his sister, and killing a she-wolf/werewolf by making out with it and biting it's tongue off) over the course of a decade-long campaign to save his sister, avenge his father and brothers, conquer the rival kingdom, and kill the king that married/raped his sister.

Full of hubris, Sigmund gets into a war with yet another kingdom and attacks a random enemy soldier that turns out to be Odin in disguise.
Odin then proceeds to teach Sigmund his place by bitch-slapping some sense into him and breaking the magical sword Gram, depriving Sigmund of his magical powers.
Sigmund ends up mortally wounded and gives the shards of the sword to his pregnant wife so that his unborn son can get the broken sword.
>>
>>64729125

2/2
Fast forwards until Sigmund's son Sigurd (known as Siegfried in the German version) is all grown up after being raised by the dwarven blacksmith Reign serving another king in Denmark.
Here a dwarf king gets a cursed magical ring that grants unlimited wealth and great power from Loki as a repayment for a debt.
The dwarf king's greedy son Fafnir murders his dad for the ring, then shape-shifts into a dragon that can't be harmed with normal weapons.

Reign is Fafnir's brother. Reign wants that ring so he asks his Ultra-Chad adopted son Sigurd to kill Fafnir and take the ring, Sigurd agrees as long as Reign makes a proper dragon-killing weapon for him.
Reign makes a bunch of swords, but all of them are weak and Sigurd just breaks with with a single swing as he tests them.
Reign however succeeds in repairing Gram which is absurdly sharp and seemingly unbreakable, Sigurd tests it by splitting Reign's anvil with a single blow.

Sigurd kills Fafnir and cuts out his heart as instructed by Reign. He brings the heart and ring back to Reign who tells him to roast the heart and eat it.
But it's a scheme by reign to kill Sigurd with an overdose of magic so Reign can keep the ring unopposed.
After taking just a tiny taste of the juices from the roasting heart Sigurd is blessed with magic powers and can suddenly understand the language of birds, the singing birds warn him of Reign's scheme.
So Sigurd kills his adoptive dad Reign and keeps the cursed ring himself. Keeping a cursed ring turns out to be a terrible idea and eventually causes Sigurd to get killed by his best friend due to a love triangle with the Valkyrie Brunhilde.
Brunhilde then destroys the sword and the ring as kills herself by burning together with Sigurd's body on his funeral pyre.

Arthur is an ever evolving mixed figure of many stories.

The earliest Arthur came from Celtic heroes that go back incredibly far, probably further back than we can really know, considering by the time anyone wrote down the mabinogion the stories were already incredibly ancient, we have no idea how much of the early "British" culture we've lost.

The first and most important thing you must learn about arthurian mythology is that it is a war between the Norman French influence (Faggots jousting and fucking each other's wives) and the Celtic influence (Highlander and Anime and Elden Ring and everything else cool about Arthur). This war represents damn near a thousand years of bitter, seething hatred, and a great deal of aggressive editing.

Pryderi Gwri is probably the oldest "Arthur", despite Normanphile scholars trying to suggest he's Percival (when, yknow, Percival is in the Mabinogion already, his name is Peredur) despite the two having literally nothing in common. This is done really just to try to hide the fact that Arthur comes from ancient Britain and not their gay french version of England.

>His parents are united when magic is used to break up a couple
>He is noted for his golden hair
>He's taken by magical forces as a baby and deposited in the care of an honest man
>He grows to be a strong and noble young man, and claims his birthright healing a conflict going on since his birth.
>In a tragic civil war he's slain by a rebel from within the court

Funny, then, that Lleu, a character born almost immediately after his death to the man that killed him, is *also* a proto-Arthur, particularly the "Arthur tutored by Merlin" and "Arthur betrayed by his wife", imagery.

Some historians think Arthur was based on some roman leader who defended the brittons from the saxon invaders, on account of Artorius being a roman name and there's records of such a guy.
There's probably a mix of folk tales, mythology and some real life events in the arthurian legend.

Different woman, dude had like 3 or 4 different wives, his sister was never one of them.

He impregnated his sis after some weird magical bullshit where she temporarily exchanged bodies with some fey/elf/fairy woman, so she could sneak away for a night and get knocked up with some of that extra-spicy divine seed, not another pregnancy by the evil king that had forcibly married her.
The sister had previously birthed a few children fathered by the evil king/husband she hated, all of them turned out to be sickly and weak, so she asked her husband to kill them, which he did without question because he was a cruel bastard.
Since both Sigmund and his sister are demigods of divine blood, she believes Sigmund's seed to be the only seed capable of producing a son strong and worthy enough to carry on the lineage, hence the seduction plot.
Sigmund didn't realize that the super hot mysterious woman who just showed up out of nowhere and seducing him was his own sister until later in the story.
The incest kid did end up playing a major role later in the same story (he was individual who killed the evil king and freed his mother), but as far as I can recall, he never wielded the magical sword Gram.

After the big revenge plot in part 1, Sigmund and his incest kid go adventuring together during which time Sigmund marries another woman.
The incest kid kills a dude due to a love triangle over a woman. The dude he killed turns out to be the brother of Sigmund's new wife.
Sigmund's new wife poisons the kid as revenge for the murder of her brother.
Sigmund is heartbroken over the loss of his son and banishes his wife before going on to further adventures and further wives before finally getting into a particularly ill-advised fight against the Odin the all-father himself.

Way back in the prologue of the saga there's a Cain&Able-like morality tale about a two half-god sons of Odin.
One of them is humble and kind, the other is arrogant and constantly brags about how skilled he is at various things, yet he is always outdone by his brother's enslaved servant.
Humiliated and furious with envy at this lowly slave, the demigod murders the slave and tries to hide the evidence.
When his brother eventually discovers the murder the killer is shamed and banished.
The entire saga then follows the family line descended from the banished demigod, explaining why they're all very powerful, yet cursed by constant misfortune and tragedy, why pretty much no one in the story gets a happy ending.

The "proto Arthurs" go back some thousand years or more before the man we think of as Arthur could have possibly lived (i.e. some time between Saxon England and Norman England) so there literally cannot be a definitive answer. There may have been one or more real leaders he was based on both AD and BC, including some Roman era figures.

Excalibur is different from Gram substantially, both in the "facts" of its life and much more importantly symbolism. The swords are related, certainly, but there are crucial differences.

The drawing of Excalibur from the stone and the anvil is a symbol not found in the Norse myths, and really it's the most important symbol of what Excalibur really is.

If I was ever to put money anyone ever getting to the origin of "King Arthur" which I highly doubt will ever be possible, I suspect it'd be a case of that he's at least a dozen different people with their stories being rolled into one character.
