Reloading generalMy press after sizing/depriming/cleaning primer pockets of over 6,000 pieces of .45 Auto brass. My die is an undersized die from EGW. They have Lee custom make dies .003" undersized to eliminate Glock bulge on brass. With my RCBS dies I had some rounds not fit in a match chamber.
My test batch of .45 Auto, 200gr plated SWCs didn't like the 4.9grs of 231 I used. Not powerful enough, I had some stovepipes, FTEs and other jams I don't think I know the name of in my P220. My next loads with 231 will be much higher at 5.8grs.I'm also trying 5.0grs of Titegroup and 6.8 grs of Autocomp, 50 round batches of each. Whichever I like the most I'll then do 2, 400 round batches or 1 800.
Based 45 enjoyer, here's a bump even though this thread will likely die fast because this isn't a gun board anymoreOn topic, after years of a single stage press I finally upgraded to pic related and it is quite nice, I haven't used the priming feature yet though.OP, I'm running 250gr flat point that Berry's sells (which are meant for 45 Colt), in a 45 Auto with 6.3gr of True Blue and it is a pleasant and reliable load. I also tried Extreme's 300gr bullet with the same charge but it is just too stout for my 1911 with stock recoil spring, but my PCC seems to love it.
I'm interested in reading more about the forbidden art of duplex/triplex powder loading. Anyone know any good sources on the subject?
Got some big boy powder the other day (N555) and plan on making some nuclear .308 175gr smk. Anyone load this? I figured I'd shoot for 43gr and check for signs of pressure. Back it off if I don't get consistent results
>>64738626>250gr flat point that Berry's sells (which are meant for 45 Colt), in a 45 AutoNice! At some point when I get around to doing .45 Super I figured that 7.8grs of Power Pistol would be good for 250s. And essentially +1 grains per next, lower bullet weigh. So for Power Pistol:230gr 8.8grs200gr 9.8grs185gr 10.8grsIt can apparently go higher, but I don't feel the need to go to the max. Effectively +p+ loads. Safe as long as the chamber is fully supported and the proper recoil spring is used.My 2 pistols that I'll use it in is picrel with a 24# spring, and my USP.
Does somebody know that brand? They shoped up at the same price as local copper plated bullets, gonna buy some and hope its not just a meme proce for place holding right now
I wonder what the psychology is between pistol shooters and rifle shooters. Seems like there are distinct camps
>>64738908There's gotta be. I've know guys that have pistols of all sorts, have been shooting for years and know next to nothing about rifles/precision shooting. On the other hand, I'm basically the exact opposite. I've never once enjoyed shooting pistols although I own two
Does anyone know if the quickload torrents are still seeded? I lost my install ages ago
>>64738965I have a few for carry and I practice with them when I must, but I really don't enjoy them at all. They just aren't the least bit satisfying to me compared to basically any rifle for some reason
>>64738164I just loaded my first few rounds of ammo, some .30-06 for my Garand, but I'm worried about shooting them. I followed the starting load data (150gr soft point bullet on top of 47gr of IMR4895), but I'm still iffy on them. The OAL is between 3.220in and 3.230in, so also well within spec. Should I try it out of a bolt action first, or should I just send it? Rifle is too rare and expensive and I really don't wanna grenade it.
>>64738908>psychologyOP here. I only have access to a 100 yard range at one club, and the other is indoors, pistol calibers only. So for me it's that I don't have access to anything even medium range in my area. If I had 600+ yards to shoot at I'd load for rifle at least half the time. But I don't even shoot my ARs or .30-30 hardly ever. Meanwhile it's twice a month to 5 times a week I'm at one range or another. Usually with a .45.
>>64739164Fair enough. I stopped going to ranges ages ago but when I was going the rules for rifles were kinda gay, pistol was a little less restrictive
>>6473915447 sounds about right and 4895 is kinda slow compared to modern stuff. If it's a starting load in the book then I'd say you're probably good to go on it since book data is EXTREMELY conservative. Is that a garand specific load or did you just go off of the 30-06 load data the book had?
>>64739182Yeah it was listed as a Garand safe load. The load wasn't out of a book to be fair, I found it on the CMP forum, so that's why I'm a bit funny with it.
>>64739228Isn't there a gas system drop in mod for M1s that allows them to shoot 'modern' .30-06?
>>64739282There is, but I havent bought one yet. I've been "planning" on getting one wince I bought the rifle 6 years ago
>>64739154What kind of question is this? I salute you for getting into handloading but the truth is that no one here can tell you if you are capable of trusting yourself to follow simple directions.
Bros convince me not to. It would be the most I ever spent on a single piece of software but I loved it when I had it all those years ago
>>64739387That's fair. I think I decided I'm gonna run them through my buddies bolt gun and see how it goes. If it was a run of the mill M1 I wouldn't worry but it's an M1D so I'd be out a pretty penny if it blew up.
>>64739462>Bros convince me not to. It would be the most I ever spent on a single piece of softwareOr you can download it for free.http://files.catbox.moe/keapp7.rarhttps://files.catbox.moe/ji47aw.rarhttps://files.catbox.moe/us0toc.7zThe only thing it's missing is the most up-to-date database, so if you really wanted to give them some money, you could buy the $40 data update instead of the whole package.
>>64738908No where near as different as pistol/rifle vs. Shotgunners. They are a different breed.>>64739154 That should be very safe, I shoot 48.5 and have gone as high as 50, which were really accurate but I could tell they were a bit too stout.
My cat is visiting me in my shop this morning
>>64740904Ngl that seems sketchy as hell. Where's the torrent if it's still up for free?
>>64741530I literally copied and pasted from the archive. It works fine. There's pirate bay torrents and google drive links if those don't trigger you.
>>64741567Nice. The torrent is what I had before but I didn't think it was being seeded anymore
Hello, reloading people. I am considering getting back into reloading and I would appreciate a little advice. I will be reloading 8mm Mauser to start with a single stage press. I have the press, dies and a dry tumbler and some components, especially a lot of brass. I used to borrow a powder scale and thrower so I will need new ones. I guess my biggest questions are1. Where is the best place to get components?2. What would you recommend for powder measuring? 3. What do you guys recommend for sourcing load data? I used to borrow manuals, too and I only have the papers that came with the dies in 2004 for data now. Does this information change frequently or is the data for this 215 year old round pretty well settled? I guess I mean, is there any reason to get the latest book, or is an older one ok? What are some reputable websites for this information?I had been developing loads for 175-220 grain bullets pushed by IMR 3031 and IMR 4895. I think I'm going to work specifically on some 200 grain Sierra MatchKing JBHP. If this goes well, I'll likely get into some 6.5x55 Swedish too. Also, any suggestions on chronographs and software would be helpful, too.
>>64741673>best place to get componentsI like Grafs because they have a flat rate shipping fee>recommend for powder measuringI just use a Hornady scale>What do you guys recommend for sourcing load data? I used to borrow manuals, too and I only have the papers that came with the dies in 2004 for data now. Does this information change frequentlyOlder books tend to have hotter loads. I'd get an old and new edition of the same brands book. And maybe 2 different brands.I'm cross referencing 2 current book sources for my loads this morning. But I'm also loading with 3 separate powders.
Thanks! That's a pretty neat seatup. I notice you have the RCBS powder thrower. That's a lot more expensive compared to the Lee unit. In general, I understand that RCBS is better quality than Lee, but what makes that one worth it? I got lucky on a deal for a used RCBS press and I 100% think it's worth it over the Lee. Younger and broker me got Lee dies. Aside from the locking collet, is there any difference in the quality of the dies?
>>64741766Nta but my experience with powder drops is that they're all pretty bad, some are just less bad than others. I've used the hornady, lee, and rcbs drops. The hornady and rcbs seemed to be about as consistent as each other while the lee was noticably less so
>>64741802Do you feel the combination scale thrower things are worth the price?
>>64741950Nta but I'd say it depends on what sort of loads you will mostly be doing and how much you value your time. If you just want to bust out some stuff to have a fun range day or larp in the woods, the accuracy of the rcbs or Hornady powder drops will do just fine. If you want to make the best quality hand loads you can, you'll be measuring every charge which will take 2-3 time longer.I personally don't mind the added time because its a chill activity I can do with friends or a show in the background but if you don't want to spend a couple hours for every 50 rounds or so then ya sounds like it would be worth it to you.
>>64741766>more expensiveNo concern for me.>>64741802>they're all pretty badSome powders meter better than others.Going to test these out tonight.
>>64741766>is there any difference in the quality of the dies?Oh sorry, didn't see this part. Speaking strictly from experience for .45 Auto dies, the RCBS dies have a longer decaping pin. I've had a few with a Lee die that didn't push the primer out fully and needed to take out the shell holder and use a finishing nail and mallet get the primer fully out.But the Lee dies j have are .003" undersized to get out the "Glock bulge"YMMV.
>>64742014Ball powders seem to meter best, which is why they work best for pistol cartridge reloading. I only do rifle, though, and rod type meters the worst in them. O well, if I'm not hand weighing everything then they aren't anywhere close to a pressure I would be concerned about, so the margin for error isn't thet big of a deal
Any of you guy load 350 legend? Can you use .355 9mm bullets to make plinking loads? What about .357 bullets like Flat point XTPs? There's not hardly any load data for it in my manuals, there's only one section in my Hornady Manual, for example. If it is a pain to get bullets for the cartridge, I may just have to go with something else.
>>64742008I'm mostly considering this because there is a Fud range literally 7 driving minutes away. The idea will be to develop extremely accurate and consistent loads, so I will absolutely be weighing every powder charge.>its a chill activity I can do with friends or a show in the background but if you don't want to spend a couple hours for every 50 rounds or so then ya sounds like it would be worth it to you.I completely understand the time aspect and I am 100% OK with dedicating time to getting things perfect. In fact, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I don't mind putting in the time to get everything setup perfectly, but I don't want to constantly fiddle with the setup the entire time, so I'll spend the extra money on the RCBS scale and powder thrower if it will give more consistent results than the Lee thrower and maybe even a bit more on the automated setup of it will be even better.I am pretty "autistic," as they say here and I don't mind detailed setups or repetitive tasks as long as they aren't interrupted. I'd probably tard rage if the powder thrower or scale are inconsistent and would probably waste a ton of money trying to figure out which one was inaccurate. I'm asking questions to save myself frustration and I appreciate your help.
>>64742449If you're weighing by hand then you need neither, just get a good trickler (I really like the rcbs one) and a nice scale. The little scoops that come with the dies aren't just for show
>>64742014>No concern for me. I'm genuinely and unironically happy for you that you are in a position to afford anything in currentyear. I guess I could easily afford whatever if I wanted, but I grew up poor and as they say>Once you're poor, you never really get over it. So, I consider most of my purchases very carefully, even if they are relatively inconsequential. >>64742042>I've had a few with a Lee die that didn't push the primer out fully and needed to take out the shell holder and use a finishing nail and mallet get the primer fully out. Interstingly enough, I actually got into the hobby as a poor fag with pic related. You use a hammer to decap AND seat primers. It's pretty intense. My point, I guess is you might be able to pick up a task specific tool for the princely sum of $2.50 USD circa 1978, so loke $95 JDIF bucks today.Anyway, the Lee dies I have are EXTREMELY adjustable and the decapping pin easily extended past the base of the case. I guess it's just circumstantial. Still, I see RCBS dies as a solid middle ground between Lee and Dillion. Also, I bet you are using sweet ass no lube carbide dies for pistol brass. I'd pay handsomely for that convenience in rifle dies, but I can't find anything to suit my purpose. What are you using for brass cleaning? I'm considering wet stainless if I stick with it, but I'm setup for about 25 at a time in corncob/walnut. Not great. Stand by for Excier
>>64742585I know benchrest guys that use these but "world record holder in accuracy" seems wild to me
